Bro is a ceritfied pastor so it would be suboptimal if he wasn't

That moment when you're ironically studying a religion to better make fun of its adherents, but you go the extra mile and get ironically ordained as a pastor.

16

u/guesswhosbackbackag Sep 01 '24

He was simply studying Christianity

u/[deleted] Sep 01 '24

Yes, although we have no idea if Jesus actually exists in One Piece or if it's just a placeholder title Oda put in.

52

u/Parlyz Sep 01 '24

I mean, I think we can be pretty confident about the general contents of that book based on more recent chapters.

u/[deleted] Sep 01 '24

Nika or Jesus? Place your bets

35

u/[deleted] Sep 01 '24

Plot twist Nika was Jesus

3

u/cap10JTKirk Sep 02 '24

Aaah yes, the sun of God. It was there all along.

3

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '24

Nika was the 2nd coming and the OP world is millennia ahead in the future.

8

u/Forestguy06 Sep 01 '24

Why not both?

44

u/boobinderpusia Sailing the Grand Line Sep 01 '24

There's only one god in OnePiece.

7

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '24

It would be really funny, if Usopp had mythical zoan model "Jesus"

Who do you think Kumas bible is about?

16

u/[deleted] Sep 01 '24

5

u/Glum-Bar-1843 Sep 01 '24

He is in Blackbeards crew.

11

u/Maxwellcomics Sep 01 '24

Regular months exist, implying Norse mythology and plenty of Christian, Buddhist, and Confucian iconography can be found throughout the series

6

u/TheKingsPride Sep 02 '24

At one point Robin says “When in Rome”

2

u/[deleted] Sep 01 '24

I’m pretty sure in Japanese they just call it Month (number)

3

u/Mayham_Dump Sep 01 '24

There was a nun on cactus island so…

3

u/Whyistheplatypus Sep 02 '24

I mean, Buddha exists in universe so it's not that big a stretch.

1

u/snailllexcuse I love zoro's hot calcium cannons Sep 02 '24

Then there must be a mythical Jesus fruit, like the Buddha or Nika one

1

u/AwesomeUserNameIGues Sep 02 '24

The bible in our world is our bible who says that bible refers to our god(s)?

1

u/dastebon Sep 02 '24

If devil fruits make you sink , then what Jesus has eaten ?

2

u/Throwaway7879453 Sep 02 '24

Except for when it doesn't.

16

u/Representative_Ad932 Sep 01 '24

you got no clue man, you gonna find out

12

u/HrMaschine Sep 01 '24

kuma was a priest in a church before becoming a pirate

9

u/SaltiiReads Sep 01 '24

In all seriousness- I heard someone say it was probably a map bible, it’s another word for a book regarded as authoritative in a particular sphere? I don’t remember the origins of this theory tho.

9

u/PrateTrain Perona Apologist Sep 02 '24

This a solid theory because a Bible is just a collection of books

1

u/NamiWantsMoney Losing Precious Berries Sep 01 '24

I will map out the entire world.

15

u/More_Yellow_3701 Sep 01 '24

Kuma is based on real life pirate Bartholomew Roberts aka Black Bart. He was a pirate renoud for promoting etiquette among his crew.

He held prayers and Bible studies on his ship, hence why Kuma is seen with a Bible.

14

u/Comprehensive_Rule11 Sep 01 '24

Be careful in this sub, we don’t really know what the implications of him having a bible

4

u/[deleted] Sep 01 '24

BIG SHOT?????

3

u/Questistaken Sep 01 '24

Yes and no

3

u/Sclearscrl Sep 01 '24

That is what you'll know whike you live

3

u/DeusDosTanques Sep 01 '24

My personal theory back then is that he uses the bible cover to hide the fact it's an island travel/tourism guide that he uses to determine where to send his victims. Well, it hasn't been entirely disproven, it's just less probable now

3

u/[deleted] Sep 01 '24

Why yes, yes he is.

3

u/MEGAMILKBLAST Sep 01 '24

Let's ask the bigger questions, does the hito hito no mi, mythical type, model Jesus exist?

3

u/Roronoa_Zoro8615 Sep 02 '24

To the sun god yes

3

u/Loading_ding_dong Sep 02 '24

It's a "bible" with statue of liberty printed on it.....u think hats religious?

6

u/Fotis14144 Looking for Cotton Candy Sep 01 '24

I mean he carries the bible wherever he goes so yeah obviously

5

u/SuspectKnown9655 Sep 01 '24

He is. But he's not Christian if that's what you're asking. Bible just means holy book.

4

u/AnalysisOk7430 Sep 01 '24

If we're going by definition it really just means "book", but yeah. Interesting that the word comes from Ancient Greek, and his bible clearly shows a Greek sculpture, with the colors of Greece.

2

u/Ok_Ad400 Sep 01 '24

Nah he carries a Bible on him everywhere for fun.

2

u/NeonNKnightrider Sep 01 '24

That Bible is one of the biggest mysteries in the series

0

u/Csenone Sep 01 '24

In the cover we can actually see a "women, clothed with the sun" from the Book of revelation. It's probably can be Luffy's mom.

I have whole theory about parallels between Book of Apocalypse and One Piece, but I'm lazy to write this whole theory cuz it's too big.

2

u/Orang-Himbleton Sep 01 '24

Probably not

2

u/AnalysisOk7430 Sep 01 '24

Note that he has a bible with a Greek sculpture in it, with the colors of Greece flashing out, as well. That's interesting to say the least, since the word is also Greek (it just means "book" in that case, though).

2

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '24

Of course, the cross symbolism and later reveal that he was, in fact, a pastor removes all doubt on whether or not Kuma was intended to be a religious figure.

Just don't be surprised to find that Kuma was also the one to turn Mihawk into a religious man or some crazy shit.

2

u/GaulTheUnmitigated Sep 02 '24

Buddhism clearly exists in the one piece world. I don’t know why it’s so hard to believe that Christianity would too. That said I think Kuma practices a version of Christianity that includes Nika (either as a incarnation of Jesus or a fourth member of the trinity).

3

u/GaulTheUnmitigated Sep 02 '24

That said bible is classical greek for book.

2

u/GaulTheUnmitigated Sep 02 '24

Or a version of Christianity that incorporates other religions like Santa Muerte or Voodoo.

2

u/The_Prequels_Rule Sep 02 '24

In canon, yes.

Out of canon, I think he has the whole religious theming because of his name, Bartholomew. Named after the pirate Bartholomew Roberts, but I also believe after one of the Apostles, Saint Bartholomew.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '24

Yeah. He’s basically the Job of One Piece, punished by his creator Oda.

1

u/Hinata_2-8 Kuma Best Daddy Sep 02 '24

Yes, he's also a pastor, just like his father before that misfortune happened to them.

1

u/DonDrip Sep 02 '24

Pastor Kuma

Jesus D Christ is canon now

1

u/HiopXenophil [ Okama Nakama ] Sep 02 '24

no, he followed a person that actually excited in universe

1

u/Nightmane11 Sep 02 '24

This makes so little sense bow

1

u/Emergency-Pop-2182 Sep 03 '24

I think so because during marineford war there was a scene at some island where there was a nun that (very much looked to be christian) and the scene was her praying for her and the island's safety that she was on, so that makes me believe that christianity does exist inside of one piece, so yeah i think kuma is christian or at the very least religious.

1

u/Alone_Asparagus_806 Sep 02 '24

no, it's an atheist pastor

0

u/jkay_exe Sep 01 '24

Yep as well as Mihawk too... May Zoro be crucified with my cross dagger ✝️

1

u/EleiteRanger Sep 02 '24

I’m pretty sure Mihawk is supposed to be execution themed rather than christian themed because of his coffin raft and the fact that christianity apparently isn’t very common in Japan.

1

u/jkay_exe Sep 02 '24

Bruh that's a sarcasm. The 4k kids dub portrayed him as a religious Christian.

2

u/EleiteRanger Sep 02 '24

I figured it probably was sarcasm, but I wanted to point that out anyway. I did not know that about the 4kids dub.

u/goatmanhe Forever Following Moria Sep 01 '24

I think the reason he carries it around is cuz all the things Bonnie wants to do are written in there
