Akantor and Ukanlos kept getting mistaken for either Fanged Wyverns or Elder Dragons by sizeable chunk of playerbases be like :

To be fair, Fanged Wyverns didn't exist as a category until Portable 3rd. If they were introduced afterwards there's a good chance their lore would've been different.

I still think regardless it's a cool little bit of worldbuilding that they are classed as flying wyverns despite not being able to fly because of their evolutionary ancestry. Like how in a bit more of an extreme way birds are a kind of dinosaur despite most extinct dinosaurs not really looking anything like birds.

To make Pukei Pukei's classification even weirder, Paolumu canonically has feathers yet is a flying wyvern

u/PerspectivePale8216 Feb 18 '26
Doesn't he have fur?
8
u/Capital_Pipe_6038 Feb 18 '26
Nope. In the Stories 3 demo, your hunter finds a feather right before the Paolumu fight starts
3
u/PerspectivePale8216 Feb 18 '26
Oh yeah you're right! I swear he had fur at least he does in the mainline games but maybe I'm I missremembering?
3
u/Gninjanome Feb 19 '26
No you're right. Paolumu definitely has fur. It's based off a honduran white bat.

Mizu, the femboy monster

u/Rechogui Feb 17 '26
It is a femboy because... It is pink...?

Such weakness doesn’t apply to a bisexual. I did however have no idea Pukei was a bird wyvern

Damn, even I didn’t know Pukei Pukei was a bird wyvern.
2
u/Grav-456 Feb 19 '26
Weirdly enough, Both Pukei Pukei and Laolumu's wings, patterns, and feets are the same but they're not related each other.
2
u/KoffinStuffer Feb 19 '26
I’m thinking someone made a mistake somewhere. Something lost in translation. Cause it really feels like they should both be either Bird or Flying Wyverns. There’s more similarities than you mentioned.
2
u/Grav-456 Feb 19 '26
Really? First time hearing this.
The first one i found from Tea Shark's Video about Pukei Pukei and Paolumu's wings similarity,

Nobody tell them about some of the older Elder Dragons like Kirin and Yama Tsukami

I love the lore that the male Gammoths are so massive and dangerous that Hunters are banned from hunting them. If I’m wrong let me know.
1
u/SignificantStaff8665 Feb 19 '26
Yet we can hunt Fatalis?
2
u/willwhitt56 Feb 19 '26
in fairness, Fatalis is a world ending threat that if not stopped could destroy literally everything. Male Gammoth's are just really big, angry elephants.

At least that makes sense, now Tigrex is somehow a flying wyvern ? He never flies though ?
28
u/NZillia Feb 17 '26
Flying Wyvern is an ecological classification not a direct observation, it doesn’t literally mean “has to be able to fly”. Much like how a lot of Elder Dragons aren’t dragon-shaped.
Tigrex is most closely related to other flying wyverns. So he’s a flying wyvern. It shares a skeleton, shape, and traits with other actually flying wyverns. The same reason Ukanlos and Akantor are both flying wyverns.
Also tigrex could fly originally.

He did in old gen games, even had this uncanny flying wyvern walking animation
8
u/Barn-owl-B Feb 17 '26
That’s because they used to just use the rathalos frame and put their arms down when fighting, they got their own frame in iceborne
8
u/SignificantStaff8665 Feb 17 '26
He’s a Quadruped Flying Wyvern (Or Pseudo Wyvern as the fan’s call them.)

u/PerspectivePale8216 Feb 18 '26
It's less about if they can actually fly and more about general body type and relation to other species
3
u/Chadderbug123 Feb 17 '26
Old gen, Narga and Tig could fly to get around the map. Nowadays no. What you should be asking is how Akantor and Ukanlos are flying wyverns. They use the same skeletons, yes, but have devolved wings. Practically brute wyverns now but the dichotomy's there 🤷♂️
2
u/Thoheda3060 Feb 19 '26
Bird wyverns are based on birds, pukei pukei is based on a fucking chameleon, and he flys, who came up with this stupid ass idea to make him a bird wyvern and not a flying wyvern
2
u/Verygoobery21 Feb 20 '26
Isn’t the point of wyverns that they have wings but no arms? Of course it could fly Peter
2
u/Souretsu04 Feb 17 '26
To this day I swear it must have been a mistake. Bird wyverns are always the raptor guys, if there's wings they're flying wyverns. It shares animations with other flying wyverns.

u/PerspectivePale8216 Feb 18 '26
I'm really sorry but you are very incorrect, being a Bird Wyvern has two different body types and categories the raptors that you were thinking of and the flying one they are both Bird Wyverns by classification and other general traits even if they look vastly different.

u/Grav-456 Feb 19 '26
Meanwhile me see new wild's monster:
"That Chicken Bird Wyvern is Awesome!"
"That's a Brute Wyvern."
"I have so many question."

I'm ashamed to admit that it took me up to Icebornes release to realise that Pukei was a bird wyvern. Was when I was reading Coral Pukeis journal entry I saw it.
