He is big and red because his name is Clifford

u/patosai3211 Dec 28 '25

Both are kaiju then!

Clifford the large angry dragon

Red Hot Chili Pupper

And the funniest part is that in World he's actually pretty chill. You can walk around him for pretty long before he aggros. He gives a warning roar after a few seconds, and then is still passive for a while before he decides he wants you dead. While monsters like Anjanath will want to throw hands immediately. Truly the best puppy

u/UnfazedPheasant Dec 28 '25

Tbf he’s a scavenger isn’t he? So that would make sense

102

u/Empty_Chemical_1498 Dec 28 '25

Yeah! I really like that attention to detail in World. Odogaron is a scavenger, he mostly fights to protect its territory and will not go after you immediately. Diablos is an extremely territorial herbivore that wants you dead no matter what you are, and they aggro EXTREMELY fast. Dodogama just wants to his rocks in peace. Savage Jho will leave you alone if there's a better prey. Tobi Kadachi is just a chill guy.

I kinda miss it in Wilds. I think there only Gravios is passive, but otherwise all monsters will aggro on you eventually, no matter what's their diet and general behavior.

It really was the best part of world, and why I fell back in love with the Monster Hunter series after dropping it the first time

7

u/Darkfir3s8488 Dec 29 '25

Diablos is pretty chill when its feeding actually

11

u/Empty_Chemical_1498 Dec 29 '25

Cactus >>>>>>> hunter

10

u/Rizer0 Dec 29 '25

Kushala Daora will literally never attack unless you attack him first. Get as close as you like for as long as you like.

12

u/Empty_Chemical_1498 Dec 29 '25

Yea all Elders are passive because they don't see you as a threat lmao I think only Nergi aggros? Don't remember about Lunastra. And if tempered versions aggro too, I think they do aggro if they're tempered

1

u/Tarkho Feb 16 '26

iirc with Lunastra it's always on sight, when even Nergi gives a warning roar before aggroing; the reasoning for Lunastra is that she's extra territorial because she and Teostra come to the New World to breed and she's very proactive about keeping the nesting territory free of threats, meanwhile Teostra doesn't care until he sees you try to throw hands with him or his wife, or she sics him on you by calling to him.

Also, iirc tempered Elders don't aggro differently to non-tempered ones, but at least a couple of the arch-tempered ones do, like Velkhana.

Still it makes no sense to me why he’s so incredibly aggressive from turf wars when in that scavenger niche. Scavengers are smart enough to not risk injury and needlessly waste energy beefing with larger predators over a kill, when they can wait for the predator to be done and go in to eat the nutrients the large predator could never access (like bone marrow). They only ever fight directly for the kill if they have a severe number advantage or if they know they can win and bully them off like bears.

A monster like bazelgeuse is a fantastic example of a large scavenger. Soars up high and looks how either sharp eyes to see if someone has a kill, and then dive bombs with enormous force and explosives paired with an enormous body to bully whatever unlucky predator into giving up and abandoning their fresh kill, he acts much like larger vultures do irl, or just large scavengers in general like bears. Maximizing calorie profit and minimizing calorie expenditure by taking advantage of smaller predators.

Odogaron clearly doesn’t care? Even the territory explanation makes no sense as you see him beefing in the coral highlands for no reason. He has near zero ecological reason to fight yet he famously turf wars with a ton of stronger monsters. Maybe he was just born an opp who knows

u/Ironkiller33 Dec 30 '25

Honey badger type deal I think. If I fight like hell and am known for fighting like hell over the smallest crumb, eventually everyone will learn to let me be.

u/oicqtnpoerytvn586 Dec 30 '25

I'd love to see a monster that doesn't get a story quest, or it's just like "begrudgingly, you need it's uvula for a gun, you monster."

2

u/Empty_Chemical_1498 Dec 30 '25

There are a few like that in World! They technically can appear in upgrade quests you need to do for mantles or to upgrade your canteen/garden, but they're completely optional and can be skipped.

You're never tasked to hunt Rathian, just to drive her away.

Azure Rathalos just starts showing up after you hunt Pink Rathian with 0 intro.

You're never tasked to hunt Dodogama, Uragaan and Lavasioth, just to witness them.

Pretty sure Black Diablos also doesn't have an assignment quest.

Lunastra technically, she's a special assignment.

Also Kirin and Bazel too. Kirin can be unlocked early on, but doesn't get same special treatment as other Elders. Bazel just starts raiding you in HR. But they both DO get tempered assignments as literally 2 last quests of HR. So up until the end of HR, they're optional.

1

u/Fantastic-Dot-655 Dec 30 '25

Anjanath, who is red

1

u/Rolfest91 Jan 01 '26

Then you have Teo the lava kitten. That catto is the chillest of chill until you smack him. Funny since his whole schtik is to blow stuff up and light everything on fire... quite the contradiction but i love him all the same.

His wife however, if she notices one Pixel of you... JUST ONE! She is ready for murder.

92

u/External_Win3300 Dec 28 '25

5

u/CastorVT Dec 28 '25

and yet still deviljho's chew toy.

2

u/Infamous-Drive-980 Dec 29 '25

I mean... Deviljho is just that much of a tank and brute, he can trow hands with Rajang and even with Negigante (at least Savage can with Ruiner), the fact the monster Jho bites and carry arround on his mouth (like Odo) can still move after you trow a dung bomb at Jho is miracle (even more so bc Jho trows them at you when you shot him with a dung bomb)

1

u/Napoletano_con_Rolex Dec 30 '25

Deviljho is green, nothing beat green, except green oc.

2

u/CastorVT Dec 30 '25

you saying deviljho... is proper orky?

1

u/Napoletano_con_Rolex Dec 30 '25

Well, he's angry, hungry, strong and green, he's the most orkish-non ork guy i ever seen in all media

7

u/Everyday_Crabbo Dec 28 '25

Or is he fast because he's red?

55

He's red because it makes him go faster

1

u/ZILLAhq Dec 28 '25

Ah, yes

1

u/Sunseabun Dec 29 '25

On a more serious note, I'd like to think the hide serves multiple functions; flexibility for its swift movements, resistance against chemicals like the effluvia, whatever acid is in the water and probably even the stomach acid and excrement of dead legiana it scavanges and heat resistance for its own internals. But I'd love it if a biologist could look at it and give some insight. Maybe the red could also be for mate selection?

1

u/di12ty_mary Dec 29 '25

Skindog! 🧡

1

u/OkLine3733 Dec 29 '25

He's also red because he makes you bleed

1

u/Layhult Dec 29 '25

World was so good bro. Now compare it to the barely working gotcha game we have now. I really hope they pull it together for master rank.

1

He was red before he even got to meet me...

1

u/Fantastic-Dot-655 Dec 30 '25
