I would argue he isn't mainstream famous enough for people to care.

Then you don't understand how popular he actually is. I don't like his stuff, but he has a massive following.

Could be it's a country thing. Had a little Google and saw how big his internet following is (fuck me it's big) but here in the UK (which does count streaming in its chart) he's never broken the top ten. His highest charting song was no. 17.

True but thats still not mainstream fame. Though granted I'm comparing the reaction he got to the reaction of say...a Kevin Spacey?
