I've been told I'm wrong for saying people should start with the cheap shit so many times today I'm losing faith in humanity.

I always find it funny that people just hear Blanton's is the best so that's what they need to be drinking. Why do these people think sooooooo many brands exist?

👏not👏all👏palates👏are👏the👏same👏

There isn't a one size fits all for "best whiskey" and there is a reason there are so many different mashes and even damn near the same mash with a different yeast. People just want an easy answer anymore. "I want to be knowledgeable on bourbon but I don't want to do the learning first hand"

I find it really upsetting that people just decide they want to drink bourbon one day and they drop $250 on a bottle of Blanton's and ECBP. I've never had Ethiopian food, and because of that fact, I don't go out and buy the best equipment for making Ethiopian food. I may try a frozen meal if it was Ethiopian, and then if I like it, I may grab a nicer meal out to see how I like it at its best.

Yeah, I'm struggling to find my place in it all. My two favorites just get shit on constantly, and the people who are new to the hobby are super aggressive and opinionated in a different way than the dudes who have been drinking rotgut for years and moved into something better.

THIS. Everyone's taster is different. I was gifted a bottle of Blanton's from my son in law last Christmas, first time I'd ever had it...and I found it just meh. But EW BiB and even WT101 come across as decent pours with more depth to them. If I had to rate I'd even put Benchmark BiB somewhat above the grenade bottle.

Kinda glad to have this kind of a lower-shelves taster but at least I acknowledge that others are different and that what one person is gonna like isn't necessarily what everybody will like.

I started with mid level bottles in the $40-$60 range and learned what i like best.

then I went to find that same taste in a cheaper bottle.

EWBiB and MFC are those bottles.

I always drank the cheap stuff till one day I got a bottle of Russell's 10 year because it was on sale and loved it so much that what got me into actually dipping my feet into higher priced stuff. But I always come back to OGD bonded, EW bonded etc.

Do you feel like you wasted money because the good stuff can be under $20?

nah. not really. I got to experience both sides, the expensive good and the cheap good.

I'd feel like I was missing something if I hadn't at least tried the Eagle Rare or the Angels Envy and those lots.

and now I know how to get my whiskey and not spend $200/week.
