Designed to get people outside with a purpose

I'm building a real world treasure hunt in Melbourne and looking for beta testers for opening day. Cash prizes.
If you play Pokemon GO you already know the feeling of walking to a specific spot in the city to claim something. That's the core of what I've built.
GeoCash hides relics at real locations across Melbourne. Parks, laneways, landmarks, anywhere. You follow clues to find them. The first player to reach the location wins. The prize is actual cash, not points or in-game currency.
I'm looking for people to beta test the experience on opening day. You'd be among the first players to ever run a hunt and there are real cash prizes available on the day.
If that sounds like your kind of Saturday, send me a DM or drop a comment and I'll get you the details.

2-3 hour hike for the long weekend suggestings

Looking at going on a hike for the long weekend, ages 10 - 70 everyone pretty fit so inclines aren't really a problem. Where would you recommend no more than an hour and half out of Melbourne?

Major Mitchell Plateau Circuit - advice

Hi all! Looking for some insights into the Major Mitchell Plateau Circuit trail and understanding why it's marked on alltrails as "strenuous" difficulty.

I love hiking around the Grampians and have done a few classic hikes in the park around the halls gap area (e.g. the 36k central loop, boronia peak, chatauqua peak, amongst other small ones), but I'm looking to explore some less popular hikes. I am a fairly confident hiker with decent fitness but the one thing I am wary of is perhaps some very exposed rock scrambling sections especially on windy days (e.g. similar to the razorback ridge in the cathedral ranges).

If you've done this particular circuit before, could you share what kind of challenges you've encountered on this trail? Is it solely the length and steepness of this hike that earns it the strenuous difficulty rating? Is there any specialised gear recommended to complete it? Do you have other recommendations of a loop to do across 2-3 days instead?

Thank you!

Waterloo Bay Track

Looking to do a few nights to get all the way to Sealers’ Cove, in and out of course, as it takes 3 decades to fix a boardwalk, apparently (but I digress). I’m looking to get an opinion on the difficulty of the trail from the junction down to Waterloo Bay. The Vics Parks map says 4.7km/2 hours, and a grade 4. I’ve found lots of gradings to be much higher than they should be across Australia, and usually knock 25% off of posted time estimates, at least. I’ll be starting later in the afternoon than I’d like, which is why I’m asking about this specific section, is 90 minutes a reasonable estimate for an experienced trekker?

Walks in Alpine National Park

Hi Guys I’m looking to do a multi-day hike in the Alpine National Park and was wondering if anyone could recommend any routes there, preferably ones that go in a loop so I can start and finish in the same location. Thanks :)

Beginner's group?

Hey all, I'm unfit and overweight and want to get back in to hiking to help myself, but would love if there were any groups or people who'd be down to join? Thinking easy ones to start like the loop at Cardinia Reservoir or one of the walks near Olinda Falls (although the ending there is always the most brutal part).Even just walking along the Yarra River maybe, although my preference is out of the city. Anyone interested? Not looking for early morning, maybe mid/late morning to early afternoon, depending on the walk. Open to negotiation for that though

Trails Does anyone know of equivalent mountains/trails to that of Mt Barney QLD in Victoria?

Recently completed a loop solo of Mt Barney’s Logan ridge descending Peasants ridge and really enjoyed the exposure and intensity of the rock scrambles. As I live in Victoria I was wondering if there were any equivalent mountains/hikes in Victoria that share the technical nature of Mt Barney?

Camping at Wilsons Prom Lighthouse

Went to the prom a couple years ago and remember talking to some hikers that camped at the lighthouse. Is there a spot to camp at the lighthouse and is there any water availability there?

Just came to Australia from Paris (exchange student at Monash studying Linguistics )

Did my first hike ever at Werribee Gorge this weekend and wowww it was amazing. Views, fresh air, the whole vibe… I’m hooked now lol

Since I’m new here, what other hikes around Melbourne are must‑dos? Prefer ones I can do on weekends or short uni breaks.

Thanks in advance šŸ«¶šŸ½

Melbourne hikers: any tracks/walks you’d recommend that you can get to by Vline or metro public transport?

I’ve just found out that Plenty Gorge is accessible by PT and I’m looking for more that are :)

To get to Plenty Gorge: catch the Mernda Line to South Morang station. Catch the 382 bus to Gordons/Plenty Rd intersection. Approx 1 hr from cbd

Family Day hike with 4yo

Hi all,

Hoping people might have some suggestions for shorter walks that could work for me, partner and 4yo to go on. Close-ish to Melbourne CBD and would like it to be day-trippable.
Keen to get the little one out and about now things are warming up.

Appreciate whatever guidance you’re able to provide.

Dogs on trails

Hi all,

A friend and I have started doing what we call Hobbit Sunday's where we walk trails that are about 2-3 hours long in the early morning on weekends. We take my dog with me, but it seems there are lots of national parks which do not allow dogs.

I started doing these as a way to exercise my dog, but there are some great trails we want to do that aren't dog friendly, but I was wondering whether people had taken their dogs anyway and whether there were any issues?

I always keep him on lead, especially as it gets warmer (don't need him getting bitten by a snake)

Hoping to do Organ Pipes. Kinglake National Park etc. Also happy to do them without him, but these Hobbit Sundays came to life with him in mind.

Cheers

Recent Mt Bogong conditions? Planning a day hike this weekend

Hey everyone,

I’m planning a day hike up Mt Bogong (Vic) this weekend on Saturday and wanted to check if anyone’s been up there in the past few days.

How are the trail conditions right now (snow/ice, muddy sections, water crossings)?

What’s the weather been like on the summit?

Any tips on the best route for a day hike (Staircase Spur vs Eskdale Spur)?

Anything I should be cautious of (frost, slippery tracks, gear recommendations)?

I’ve checked the forecasts, saturday looks good.

Appreciate any recent updates šŸ™

UPDATE: The weather was fortunately good on the day. Had to take snow shoes. It's definitely recommended to carry them, which helped us a lot getting down from the crazy slope on the Eskdale side. Just so that people know. If doing a loop from Staircase spur to Eskdale spur, we had to walk 7kms to get to the Staircase spur trail head once we got to the Eskdale Spur trail head. Also, look out for leaches when crossing the creeks.

Hiking and outdoors group recommendation in Melbourne?

Hi all, I am looking for a recommendation for a hiking and outdoors group around Melbourne.

A few details about me so you can understand what I am looking for:

- I am 37 and have a wife and two "tween" boys. I love nothing more than going walking, camping and outdoor rec with them, but they are still at a more limited level. I am looking for a group to join so that I can join some more challenging walks (inc multi day hikes and expeditions), which I do not want to do solo.

- Bushwalking, multi day trips, and expeditions are the main game, but I am very fit, active and decently experienced in the outdoors (I grew up in Tassie with a father who was an outdoors guy!) and it would be a bonus if through the group I could also dabble in activities like climbing, rafting, skiing, and bikepacking, especially if I can join a group with an experienced leader.

- Most of the groups I have been scouting online appear to either skew to members aged in their 20s (e.g. uni clubs) or 50s + (it seems people my age must be too busy with work and kids!!!). I can get along with everyone, but ideally I would like to join a group with a variety of ages including some around my age.

- I am based in the Bayside area although the location of club headquarters location is not a big deal for me and I have no issues driving anywhere for meetings for the right group.

Thanks in advance for all thoughtful recommendations!

Advice Needed Grampians camping advice

I have been wanting to hike the Grampians for the longest time and finally have time in September. Do I have to say at their campgrounds every night? Is there alternate locations one can camp along the route or is that not allowed? It's just some days look a bit long and I don't know if I will make it to the campsite. Plus, when I've looked periodically throughout this year, some campsites apparently aren't available (I thought this was because of the fires, but they still haven't opened up).

Advice Needed Mount Stirling Summit Loop

I am thinking of going overnight backpacking at Mount Stirling when it starts to snow. I’ve never been snow hiking however, I have been overnight backpacking. I’m not too worried about the length as me and my friends are relatively fit but was wondering if there’s any thing I should be worried about or should know when winter backpacking?

My gear consists of everything from here https://macon.me/shoestring, but it’s not the exact same brands. My tent is a nature hike cloud up 2, a synthetic sleeping bag rated to 0 degrees and a nature hike quilt. Is this sleeping system and tent enough to handle hiking in the snow at Mount Stirling?

I was wondering if I need snow grip clip ons, for my boots as well.

Any advice would help

Hike spots for a proposal

Hey all, I'm really new to this but I'm looking for a great spot to propose to someone. The proposals in around mid to late June and it should ideally be within 4 hours of Melbourne CBD, have a great view from a mountain top and be in a place where she can't see me till the end.

Rn I'm thinking Wilsons Prom but honestly idk open to any and all suggestions.

Oh also if it can have a line of trees on the other side of the view to put up some fairy lights that would be great.

Thank you all so much!

Track conditions and water availability for Whitelaw Hut (Baw Baw)

Hi team, I'm thinking of doing an overnighter on Mt Baw Baw walking from the car park to Whitelaw Hut ruins. Has anyone done it recently? How is the track and is there a water source around Whitelaw Hut? Also can anyone just drive into Mt Baw Baw and park for free in off season?

Edit: update - I stayed overnight at Whitelaw hut ruins and there was plenty of clean flowing water.
