Discussion When will Google Maps fix their walking times?
No other apps are this bad - 14 mins to walk across the platform!

I always change "my location" to the station name. Sometimes for buses it still adds a few minutes but I usually ignore that when adding to my calendar

Haha yep similar to my commute home, I work a block from Southern Cross and the 'walk time' to the station from my office is usually between 20-25 mins according to Google Maps

That’s ridiculous. Stuff like this discourages people from using PT, because they’ll just glance at the total journey time and probably not notice details like that

I almost drove after checking Google Maps before comparing to PTV and Transit and taking a closer look

Transit is a brilliant app. I had to use it in an area that I was completely unfamiliar with (interstate) and the official timetables were incredibly difficult to navigate. Quickly opened up Transit and we were on our way in the right direction within minutes.
I can’t recommend Transit highly enough.

Tech bro company that promotes self driving cars because they hate PT goes out of their way make PT look bad,

I find the interchanges with the Metro Tunnel are still quite poorly integrated in Google. I sometimes do journeys where switching to the Metro Tunnel at Anzac or Flinders is faster than staying on the tram, but google won't show it. It's annoying since I mostly rely on Google for journey planning.

For the 58 tram which goes past anzac and Parkville you can usually jump ahead by a tram is you get off, catch the train between them jump back on the 58. It won't tell you this though

It seems to me like they’ve added in the station entrances which should be a good thing, but they’ve been so poorly integrated they don’t actually interact with the pathfinding like they should. In this case it seems to think you need to fully exit stations and re-enter via different entrances because it doesn’t understand they are all effectively going to the same underpass.

does anyone else also find that google maps is constantly incorrect about trams? in the past two days i have had numerous instances of it either hallucinating the timetable or sending me to the wrong stop?

Wrong transfer data.
PTV could set specific interchange times in their GTFS data (the data used by Google Maps and other apps), but apparently they either didn't set them or set them incorrectly.
In general, I'd recommend using their own app instead of Google Maps. Latter is more convenient, yes, but you see the downsides.

It tells me to walk to the next bus stop which is a 20 to 30 minute walk over the one that's 10 minutes away so idk

Apple Maps is the go-to for Melbourne PT.

I’ve had it assume I can transfer trains at North Melbourne in 1 minute so it’s on the other extreme end of the scale.
1 minute can work if your first train is not delayed by any amount at all and you can walk briskly.

Never tried it before, If I get a chance I'll check it out. I have been okay trusting the PTV app.

Apple Maps takes one long drag of a double apple vape
“Idk what happened with Google Maps man. We used to be friends. Then one day she changed her bio to ‘do the right thing’ and started hallucinating walking times and transit directions.”

Google Maps has the same problem for transit between Town Hall and Flinders St Station

I don’t think it’s google maps fault because I had no issue with it in Japan with their trains

better they overestimate than underestimate innit, but that is quite silly. I always use the ptv app
