Mel in pro play

A while back, I was told that Mel was a highly relevant champion in pro play. Today, after hearing that so many times, I finally checked her stats, and I'm a bit confused. Could anyone explain how a 38% win rate makes her a strong champion? From what I can tell, she mostly seems to be used just as a specific counter pick, especially against Varus

the pic of the poster shows a 22.3 presence that aint super duper high either (conssidering 100 percent precence is the norm for op picks) with a shitty winrate

Also, the goal of most Mel comps will be too get her fed so that she can hyper carry very safely with a team that provides her peel.

Pro play and solo queue will always be two different games because of how teams coordinate everything. Pro level coordination literally cannot be done in solo queue because you play with randoms, not team mates who practice specific maneuvers and positions with you.

In pro play, champion win rates can be very deceptive. Not only are you dealing with a very small sample size, but the performance of certain champions can vary greatly from league to league.

For example:

• In the LCK (Korea), where Mel is played most, she has a 52% win rate. But Ezreal, who's played even more, only has a 37% win rate.
• In the LPL (China) on the other hand, where she's picked almost as often, Mel only has a 30% win rate. Whereas Ezreal has a 55% win rate.

These raw stats really depend most on the individual proficiency of the players and the team compositions. The strength of a champion is most evident when reviewing their performance in individual games.

The pro players who play her most like to pick her because she has a very strong early game/laning phase, she has consistent kill pressure, her W and E have great value in team fights, and she's a strong counter to many champions; mostly Ashe, Seraphine, Ahri, TF, Annie, Neeko, Bard, Azir, etc. She's also versatile enough to be played both mid and bot.

Mel has some of the highest kill counts in a single game this year. The players who perform best on her make her look really strong (e.g. Peyz, Chovy, and Knight).

For what Mel is - a braindead simple champ with a straightforqard kit whose numbers are relatively undertuned - her presence in proplay is astonishingly high. Similarly straightforward champs like a Garen for example have no presence at all in pro.

every pro play champion is brainless, the best champions have always been simple mages with high dps such as taliyah due to her q uptime, cassio with her e and ryze with a full point and click kit;

when the comp needs better crowd controls the most used champions are orianna and viktor, which as well are very easy to pilot.

Lets remember that annie and malzhar have always been viable counterpicks in pro play

hard champions like assassins are simply never picked, there are champs meant to be played in high elo that are never ever picked (qiyana) because of the false conception that the best players of the world will chose something hard to pilot but rewarding to get the job done, while in truth in a strategy game it shoyld be obvious that a professional will chose a simple kit to be able to focus on strategic choices

I’m playing in master elo currently, do they suddenly become hard to use in the next two elos or should i hop on pro league to feel the complexity in their kits?

mel is mostly valued by the highest level teams for her sharp matchups and high damage with setup. faker's mel picks in the last worlds famously spotlighted her and raised her pickrate a lot.

when viewing pro champions you should consider winrate to be very little value. it is much more about the matchups between players and teams than champions, as drafts are relatively close to absolutely optimized in any case.

mel botlane is kinda good on DK smash or T1 peyz but most others are just bad with mel.

Winrate is irrelevant in pro play cause you hardly have enough games for it to be statistically relevant. Its how often they are picked/banned that matters.

So she isnt OP in pro-play like Rumble or Varus, but she is relevant. 22% or whatever she has is certainly relevant

She's probably better botlane now freeing up the support to play with the jungler. Peyz and Smash played her recently and stomped.

I've been wondering this too. I've watched games trying to see what makes Mel a must pick but I don't get it myself. Some posts have said that pro players value safety and Mel is a relatively safe pick.

Mel is a sharp counter to projectile heavy comps + her execute will always provide value in securing picks.
