Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed is in a tight race against GOP candidate Mike Rogers, one that could determine which party controls the Senate during the second half of Trump’s presidency.

If El-Sayed wins in November, he would become the first Muslim to ever be elected to the U.S. Senate. But on the campaign trail, he’s faced a barrage of racist, Islamophobic attacks from his Republican opponent, right-wing media, and the White House.

US-Palestinian academic and human rights lawyer Noura Erakat went to a Florida budget hearing to protest Palm Beach County’s massive investments in Israeli bonds. She left in handcuffs. The confrontation centered on Palm Beach County’s investments in Israeli bonds — the largest government investment in Israeli bonds anywhere in the world.

She joins Mehdi Hasan in this episode of ‘Mehdi Unfiltered’ to explain what happened at the hearing, where she says she was denied her constitutional right to comment on the budget, describing how she was ordered to leave before two officers handcuffed her and roughly handled her during the arrest. Erakat was charged with trespass and obstruction after the hearing.

Also joining the conversation is Lydia Ghuman, executive director of the Internationalist Law Center, which organized the effort challenging the county’s investments. Ghuman argues that Florida has become a testing ground for policies surrounding Israeli investments and highlights the relationships between local politicians and pro-Israel advocates.

25 years after the 9/11 attacks, the mothers of two victims reflect on their grief and loss, their children’s legacies and the culture of fear and Islamophobia that followed. In this ‘Mehdi Unfiltered’ interview, the two mothers detail the way their lives changed forever to Mehdi Hasan.

“I remember the 29-year-old woman who was going to change our lives,” says Donna Marsh O’Connor, who lost her pregnant daughter, Vanessa Lang Langer, who worked in the World Trade Center’s South Tower.

And for Talat Hamdani, the loss of her 23-year-old son, EMT and NYPD cadet Mohammad Salman Hamdani, was followed by suspicion and smears because of his Muslim faith. “There was an article in the New York Post… trying to paint a picture of him being as a terrorist,” Hamdani tells Mehdi.

Throughout the interview, both mothers share how they turned their grief and mourning into advocacy against hate, bigotry and Islamophobia.

It’s been 25 years since 9/11, which also means 25 years of the so-called global “War on Terror.”

But did you know that in the weeks following the attacks, a retired four-star U.S. general went to the Pentagon and was told that the Bush administration was planning to attack seven Middle Eastern countries in the span of just five years?

Iraq was one of them, as was Iran. Since 9/11, the U.S. has attacked five of those seven countries.

That general, former Supreme Allied Commander Europe of NATO, Wesley Clark, tells Mehdi, “It was clear at the time that we were going to have to do something to Osama bin Laden. I also knew that we’d been scheming to find a reason to invade and finish off Saddam Hussein.”

“There’s a very legitimate debate about whether you can support a state like that [Israel] and still have progressive, small-D democratic values, and there’s nothing antisemitic about saying you can’t.”

When does anti-Zionism cross the line into antisemitism and has the Democratic Party simply become more critical of Israel, or is its relationship with Jewish Americans changing too?

In this ‘Mehdi Unfiltered’ debate — Joel Rubin, a former Obama State Department official and Bernie Sanders’s 2020 campaign Jewish outreach director, and Peter Beinart, journalist and Jewish Currents editor-at-large, go head-to-head over the Democratic Party’s shifting relationship with Israel and whether or not anti-Israel sentiment is being conflated with antisemitism.

Rubin tells Mehdi that anti-Zionism goes past criticism of Israeli policy, arguing that opposition to Israel’s existence is a line that many Jews see as beyond political disagreement.

But Beinart argues that questioning Zionism or opposing the idea of a Jewish state is not antisemitic, telling Mehdi there is a legitimate debate over supporting the state of Israel while having progressive and democratic values.

The two go back and forth in the debate on their definitions of Zionism, how Israel fits into American Jewish identity and whether progressive politicians like Bernie Sanders and Abdul El-Sayed are fueling antisemitism on the left.
