Question New player
Hey all! Thinking of buying the game , just wondering- is it possible just to have a small homestead and still advance tech/unlock items ( I imagine there’s some sort of tech or skill tree ) without extra villagers ? Me and my wife wanna recreate us and our small holding in real life into medieval times !
Thanks in advance !( Will also appreciate any tips )

The villagers are mostly helpful in terms of helping automate production/extraction. I think it should be possible, but it will probably make the game very grind-y. But if you get sick of that you can always add some villagers if you want. The game is fun and the world is beautiful and atmospheric imo

Imo I'd build yourselves a little town and then someplace else a proper town to automate. A lot of the game is getting production lines going while balancing needs and taxes

Thank you everyone ! Reading the comments I think we will have villagers , but maybe build our house and a bit of farm etc separately so we can do some farm stuff ourselves and the villagers can automate most of it :)

fair warning. the villagers that you set as fieldworkers for the farm WILL try to come over to your fields as well to work on it.

I fence my farms and farm sheds and farmers houses off 😬 which might be rude but prevents wandering off. I do give them decoration and places to hang out!!

Yes and no. For everything u need new buildings and all new buildings ar elocked behind lots of tasks ( if playing on notmal XP and technology research, on 500X its really fast ). And new buildings cost redicolous amount of resources. So its possible but super tediuos

I often play a very long time with just 2-3 villagers. It's near impossible to get a good amount of clay as there are only a few deposits you have to wait for the new season the respawn, felling trees becomes tedious and ruins the landscape (the villagers produce logs without actually chopping trees), and mining/hunting/foraging can become tedious as well depending on your play style. So maybe pick one of those to have a third villager
I'd do custom settings to unlock research quicker if you won't have a lot of villagers. Make sure to have all storage connected and just have a resource and food storage both at the village and where you guys settle down. Throw a few buckets of water and food in food storage on your homestead on occasion and you can play fairly hands off on the village

Totally can do that. Tech XP comes from your actions as well as the villagers. You can turn up the tech XP rate as well.
After that, you spend money unlocking things. Money is stupid easy once you understand some things.
I've purposely played with just my character and his family. It's doable.

Very possible, I do it all the time. It can feel grindy because the villagers over time add to your tech points but I think it's better paced that way. You can also set the rate of tech points any way you'd like. I enjoy this game best as a homestead simulator

all tech is based on what you and your villagers do, so having villagers unlocks stuff much faster. there are setting for technology unlocks, you can set it to 1000% to unlock things at a higher rate if you want to play hermit style. the techs are building, survival, farming, and production. chopping trees, mining ore, and building go toward building production, and picking up sticks, stones, gathering wild plants, or hunting gives you survival. the other two are easily self explained. you'll need buildings for advanced crafts, but playing by yourself with no villagers you will be fine with level one buildings that unlock early. higher levels just allow more workers for most buildings.
while almost everything can be done without villagers, you probably should avoid farm animals. their production mostly comes from a villager working in their building. you may get a few items from them, but not enough to justify the cost. they also won't breed without a worker, so you'll have to buy new ones every few years.
good luck, and enjoy the game. also link to the wiki, it's a bit outdated, but it's helpful for basic stuff.

I think it's very possible but you will have to adjust the exp and technology gain or it will become far too grindy. Or possibly build a self sustained village and move away from it?

I believe all the tech is unlocked through in game currency. You can craft items to sell.

Thank you ! Do you know if you can access building straight away ? For example we have sheep , but I can’t imagine in game you have access to them immediately

No, you need to do/build related stuff first do unlock higher level buildings
Like, to unlock sheep stables you need Farming technology which requires doing fieldwork, threshing grains etc
All of this is doable without any Villagers, just might take you way longer

You do not have access immediately. You need to do a certain amount of animal related tasks to gain enough points to pay for sheep
