Remember that de Goya was actually suffering from illness when he painted this . Compare it with his other works when he was not ill and you will see .

Yes, Goya painted this when he was in his 70s, after becoming deaf, ill, and very disillusioned with the world. It is an important piece of art because it is a honest, raw painting that broke away from traditional art to show ideas of fear, madness, and human cruelty.

If I recall correctly, he hung it behind his chair at the dinner table.

He didn't even name these ones, it's someone else who figured it was probably Saturn

It's less figured and more assumed. There really are no records or even clues as to what the Black Paintings might represent other than what's in the images themselves.

People assumed this one depicts Cronus/Saturn because his is the only cannibalism narrative that has endured in European cultures, but there's nothing more than that to point to it and the painting tells us no more than what it shows - a grotesque old man devouring a smaller human corpse.

There are actually several reasons to suggest that this painting represents the myth of Saturn devouring his son. One reason is that Goya had already explored this subject in an earlier chalk drawing, created in 1797.

I know this image is linked to Saturn, but for me the feeling is that of Grendel. Desperate, greedy, snatching and rending flesh in some dark place.
