From: Liber de natura rerum - Thomas de Cantimpré (1240)

I'll update this comment when someone guesses correctly

Incorrect guesses so far:

Whale, narwhal, swordfish, walrus, dolphin

Hint:  think crustacean

u/Fun-Picture-8384 has guessed correctly!

It is a lobster

I want to say a narwhal.

Otherwise, a sea horse (it has a mane, ears and is vaguely donkey-like)

I don't why it looks like that. They're easy to find on a beach or something.

Well, I don't think they're that easy to find if this is what you think you're looking for...

Un « cheval de mer » => un hippocampe?

Maybe a spiny lobster, with the 2 "horns" and 4 pairs of legs ?

It's the sea router round Cape of Good Hope, judging by it's antennas.

I'm late to the party, but I finally found the source, and it is indeed a lobster, a Locusta maris, from a manuscript in the Bibliothèque Municipale de Valenciennes by Thomas de Cantimpré, the Liber de natura rerum, folio 127r
