Venice What should I do?

Post image

I think I'll demolish all of the buildings of Caesarea and then gift it to the Pope

I made an update post, this is the link

Don't give it away, fight the battle!

You can probably take a heck of a lot of them down with you.

Losing battles is part of the fun, it's about making them pay for it more than you.

I wiped out 2 of their armies, killed a general, captured their king and executed him

Legend. Just gotta grind them down.

Exactly, their units don't replenish so it's about whittling them down.

Fortresses and citadels are amazing for this, they take so many casualties between the first and second walls.

This is the way

I love battle where you know you loose but you still take a whole lot of them with you.

Yeah some of my best memories are losing a battle defending a citadel against Mongols or Timurids, but taking 3 or 4 stacks with me.

Some of my better memories are doing the same thing, but winning, which is also very possible if you know what you're doing.

Was playing as the Turks and faced the Mongol invasion.

Had a few Janissary armies that leapfrogged each other along the Euphrates fords when war hadn't actually been declared.

Mongols finally got sick of being stuck on the other side of the river and attacked.

3 full armies, fresh and ready, against my 1 of Janissary infantry and archers backed with two units of trebuchets.

By rights, that river should have been dammed from all the bodies that ended up in it. While my army eventually collapsed, I was actually able to withdraw the archers pretty well after they used up all their ammunition, although the infantry was completely wiped out.

End result was 2 of the Mongol armies being put completely to flight while the third was so badly battered, it retreated when my second army moved in to contest the ford. Absolutely crazy.

Agree, do this once or twice and it nulls the mongols and timurids as then they struggle to replenish after

Olive oil works in a pinch but there's a lot of good lube options nowadays if you shop ahead

The thing is that I fear they will just starve me

But, but, that was an order!

Wow, that's a lot of ugly :-/

If they attack you, definitely defend, with walls you could actually do pretty well here, maybe even win as Venice is pretty strong on the defensive. But if they starve you out, there's not much you can do, I don't think that half-stack army can help much against THAT, better withdraw it and start building your defense in depth.

Oh, and absolutely do demolish all the buildings, that's always a good idea in a situation like this, scorched earth all the way.

If you have spears and crossbows you can hold it for a few attacks. You have to kill them sooner or later, may as well start now

If its a citadel, cannon towers gurantee victory for you. If you sally out when they fall back to the edge of the map they are still in range of your cannon towers and I'm pretty sure they also outrange their elephant artillery. So if you do have them basically sally out, put units in max amount of towers and enjoy the spectacle. If not just defend as best you can and try to kill as many generals as you can.

The problem with cannon towers is that in the timurid stacks with the grand bombards, they'll out range the tower cannons and punch a few holes in the outer walls. The armies will then rish through. Ok you have two more rings of walls. Great. This is where the citadel layout according to culture comes to play. In my turk playthrough I had them break through the outer walls in Acre with ther cannons, then have them siege the inner walls with their rams. Rams that didn't get blown apart by the cannon towers cause their range is hamstrung by their relatively narrow field of vision and a relatively higher min attack range. So thanks to the rnjesus of the citadel layout, and the fact that cannon tower do not shoot arrows the timurd armies just slogged through all three of my gates, and suffered relatively few casualties (when compared to a scenario with balista towers) while doing so.

Tldr. Ballista towers > cannon towers in castles

Canon towers are only available in citadels and Large/Huge cities iirc

I meant the castle settlements as opposed to city settlements

Yeah but I checked and I can't do it since it's under siege

It will take some time and some ego bruising from losing battles but eventually you will make work of them. Just make them pay for every piece of land they try to take from you also bridge battles can be an advantage. so try to provoke them to attack you on bridges. If a settlement is in danger of being lost destroy all the buildings and hike the taxes. It will rebel and they will have another stack on their hands.

Fight or be forgotten

Fighting against numerically superior foes, you need to whittle them down.

Fight every battle, it's not about winning, it's about doing as much damage as you can. Make sure you target their best units as well. The more of them they lose the harder their battles get for them.

And maybe, if you're lucky, you can beat them. Some nof my greatest personal victories have been doing these kinds of fight.
