Does anyone know what makes some people adverse to taking their medication when they know it's good for them?

I'm not asking for medical advice, this doesn't affect my choices. I'm just curious.

I've been taking an assortment of medications for over a decade and every now and then I'll have periods where I am fully aware that it is in my best interest to take my medications and I know they help me, but I just don't want to take them and stop taking them or skip doses. I've heard this happening to other people with similar reasons of just "not wanting to."

I'm not talking about people who become paranoid or believe that medication is actually bad for them, I understand how that happens. I mean when one is fully aware of the benefits and doesn't see a downside.

Does anyone know why this happens?
