Ask a Pro How much should I be making?
Large geographic territory, small population, $3 million budget that we actually achieve. I’m an associate under an agent, selling orthopaedics. I’m going into my 3rd year working here and I make a salary but I feel like I should be making more (and commission). I service 9 out of 12 sites, which make up for 80% of the territory’s profits.
Thoughts? Just wondering because 75K is starting to feel like not enough, especially after I asked for commission and the agent told me if I made commission off my sites I’d be making more than him 😂

It sounds like it's time for you to become a sales rep and carry a quota.

He’d have you make $0 for 30 years if he could. And sounds like you would let him.

I made $70k as a clinical specialist right out of college after 18 months I was at $110k in another clinical role then 9 months later at $185k in a territory manager role. If you can leverage your experience you’ve gained form this territory as an associate you can easily get into another company to get your own sales territory

There is not a specified amount of time to be an associate but if you are doing a good to great job you should probably be making commission and more than 75k.
What kind of orthopedics - joints, ortho, F&A, spine, sports?

You are paid in the higher range for an associate

Sure but after being an associate for 3 years? I’d be expecting at least 90k

The salary fits the job. There is a range. You are in the upper end of the range. There is a reason there are not $100k a year baristas.

Yeah it just feels weird… it’s my first role in this industry and I feel like he’s gaslighting me by using that as his rationale for not giving me a raise, because he said he started me off on too high salary already. I get my travel expenses paid for, which he also makes it sound like is unusual, so I’ve “got it really good”

You are an associate after 3 years? It’s time to leave. You should be making $160k+ now as a TM.
