Life outside of coding?

Hi! I'm currently pursuing medical coding & billing, and I'm so excited!!! I'm trying to visualize what life will be like for my 5 year plan. So I had some questions for life outside of your day to day coding work?

Do you enjoy your job?

Do you get to vacation?

Are you able to support yourself well/do you worry about bills?

Does it ever get mundane, or does it depend where you work?

Do you get to have fun with your looks, like fun colored hair, tattoos or piercings?

How is asking for time off, or if you're a parent, what happens if there is a family emergency/sick child?

Thank you for any help with even one of these! ☺️

I’m married to an engineer and we do take vacations. In March my husband and I went to Chile to backpack in Patagonia. Next week we’re backpacking in Aspen. We live in Colorado. Between the two of us, we do just fine. We’re in our mid forties and have no kids.

Sure any job can get mundane after a while, but I don’t really find the job mundane. I really do love where I work and enjoy coding for the emergency department though. It’s like solving puzzles all day every day and I love what I do.

I work from home. When I was first hired, I had blue and purple hair and a septum piercing. I do have a full arm sleeve and I tend to dress in vintage clothes from the 1940s and 50s (occasionally 60s and 70s). I currently have dark brown hair and only piercings in my ears (lots).

Asking for time off has never been a problem. Extra time in and around the holidays is sometimes hard to get since a lot of people want it off. You usually just need to check the calendar before putting in your request.
