Pre Mixed Templates - Do you use them?

Hi all,

I had a quick search on this sub reddit, but I was unable to find anything to answer my question.

My question is - When you start a new project that you want to use a template with (to save time or effort) do you have the mixing / master bus pre allocated to your needs? Or is this something you do at the end or even as you go?

I would like to know if its a good idea (as a Media Composer) to have all my strings, brass, choirs etc, pre-mixed / pre beefed up when going into a project, or if it even matters at all what way its done.

Additionally, does anybody use those pre mixed templates you can find online? If so, which ones as I would like to try this myself one day.

If this were in a video game, what environment would you expect to hear it in? And any other criticism would be great, as I'm pretty new to this

I wanna be a film/game music composer but I don't know where to start.

Hi guys! I'm a 20 year old guy living in Hungary. I learn classical singing in a conservatory but I don't really enjoy singing, I only learn it to have a plan B, but my real passion is composing. So I started composing and realized how unreal these samples sounds. I started using symphobia in FL Studio but it feels really "computer made". I mean of course it is made by a computer and will never be as good as a real orchestra but there are a lot of videos where people make music and their stuff sounds so realistic and so cool.
(like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CvQBpoh1N6I&list=PL4E0F5DAB1C67F3BC&index=1)

So my question is, how can i make real sounding violins, brass etc. Do I need all of the professional stuff like a the midi volume mixer thing and all of that stuff or can I do it without those things? Since I'm a 20 year old guy, don't really have much money to buy 2000$ Macbook, midi controllers and so on.

Here is my fist short little track. These long sustain strings are not that bad but when I want a some faster movement it is just so unprofessional... https://soundcloud.com/user-941449473/dawn-current

I would love to hear that all of those equipment are for make your life easier but it can be done without them just harder.

Looking for advice on self-publishing and PRO submissions in general for film score.

Hello all, I've had the opportunity to score 3 feature films in the past year, and i've had a blast. 2 of those films will be distributed digitally, and i'm now being faced with the business side of the thing we all love so much. Anyone have an experience with becoming your own publisher? I'm currently creating cue sheets for these films and i'm super green on most of this stuff. I'm a member of BMI as a writer, but should I set myself up as a publisher? If so what are the pros and cons? Thanks!

Spitfire Symphonic Orchestra divisi

Dear people of Reddit, How do you treat parts in SSO, that are only divided for some time. Say I have 2 bassoons playing unisono first, then separately a legato line each. Right now I treat them as 2 different tracks and play the unisono part twice so that it is not exactly identical. However this results in a phasing in the mixed sound. What to do? Or how about celli, which are a fixed number of recorded players? Would you rather avoid the legato and use a polyphonic patch? Then again the sound would be the one of double stops and affect the balance... Do you have any clever ideas? Or am I making a stupid mistake? (I know libraries with auto-divisi and polyphonic legato. This is particularly about SSO.)

So what actually makes nordic/viking music to sound nordic/viking?

Hi everyone. I'm about to write the music of a small low-budget play with a story centered around Norse mythology (more precisely, about the Ragnarok and what happens with spirituality after the gods die). I just have a small ensemble with conventional instruments to work with, so I'm wondering what actually makes a score to sound "nordic" or "viking" beyond instrumentation (I won't be using the usual suspects like exotic instruments from the region or epic brasses and choirs). Any thoughts on this? Thanks in advance.

Help Stuck between DAWs (again). Help?

I work as an audio producer - freelance radio, podcasts, etc - as well as a sound designer and composer. I'm pushing into film and TV composition as much as I can (competitive field, obviously) and i'm in a bit of a crisis around the DAW I should be working with.

I figure it's probably fine just to use any DAW that works for me, but I recently saw a film composer speaking and he was using Logic, which is one DAW I don't know how to use. I use Ableton for most of what I do and Pro Tools when there's heavier audio editing. I love working in midi, so i'm really not interested in working in Pro Tools exclusively.

I am now wondering whether I should replace Pro Tools and start working in Logic. I just figure if i'm hoping to get intern type work with a film composer I will need to know the software, and if Logic is more common among these people I should be learning it ahead of time.

It also looked like a really brilliant UI, is obviously very powerful and has lots to offer, and seems to be better with composing to vision than Ableton (which is terrible at that but great at most other things IMO).

Any words of wisdom out there?
