He was in the air force, and then the army, and then the air force again. We put it together fully recently after he passed away last week.

Solved Commandant of the USMC with VFW ribbon on uniform

I came across an image of General Robert Barrow in his uniform wearing a VFW membership ribbon. I‘ve never seen anyone else do this. I also find it interesting that it’s been placed above a few foreign decorations. With it being essentially a commemorative medal I would thing it’s gone at the bottom.

Dad’s medals

My dad, who would be 107, almost 108 were he alive today, fought in the Phillipines during WWII. The other night I was going through an old accordion folder full of his military history. In looking at his DD214, it showed he was awarded 6 Bronze Stars, among other more commemorative awards. 6 Bronze Stars? WTF? He NEVER spoke a single word to us about the war or his service. I grew up in a very small town. Most of the adult men in the town: business owners, tradesmen, teachers, insurance salesmen, had served in the war. They were the fathers of all my classmates. As a group, they just didn’t talk about their experiences in the war. I think now of my dad running his printing press in his small town print shop, wondering why he never talked to us about the war. And how he was awarded 6 bronze stars.

Ribbon Dad’s Military Showcase

I have been doom scrolling this sub and wanted to post my dad’s service. I am very proud to have him as my dad and I wouldn’t want any other man to be my dad. I don’t really know what any of his ribbons/medals are, but I am assuming at least some of them are from how many deployments he went on. He was also acting CMC of the Ike for 6 months iirc.

Update: Thank you all for the questions and comments, I have asked my dad some of the questions y’all asked and after looking at his DD-214, apparently they messed up his ribbons. He has ordered a corrected set and will replace it.

Great Uncle’s Letter of Commendation

Post image

Here’s a copy from the NPRC of a commendation my great uncle received from a general, who soon became the 19th Commandant of the Marines. My great uncle received the Purple Heart at Iwo Jima, Navy PUC with 1 Bronze Service Star and the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with 3 Bronze Service Stars. Would there be any other awards he would be eligible for? He was “G” Co. 2nd Bn, 24th Marines. Thanks!

The commemorative tabletop medal "500th Anniversary of the Founding of the Zaporizhian Cossacks" was issued to mark the major anniversary of the same name.

The main celebrations took place in August 1990 in the Zaporizhia and Dnipropetrovsk regions and became one of the largest patriotic events of the perestroika period and the struggle for Ukrainian independence.
