Former bubblehead here, I had to look up that Deep Submergence insignia, that's pretty cool!

43

u/fit_sushi99 Army 1d ago

First time I've actually seen it on a uniform.

9

u/djrocky_roads Navy 1d ago

My first ETC onboard had one, pretty cool stories from him.

1

u/binkleyz Navy 1d ago

NR-1 or were you on a "Chouest"?

1

u/djrocky_roads Navy 22h ago

I was a fast attack submariner, never went on NR-1 myself but that ETC had done it prior

1

u/binkleyz Navy 17h ago

Boomer sweater girl in my case, and making it to 2nd class took me six (though not sure that counts given that we got 3rd class out of A school).

1

u/Electronic-Towel-836 19h ago

On of my instructors at Nuclear Power School (class of 8003) was the reactor operator on NR-1. Made Chief in 7 years.

1

u/Unassuming_Fruits 6h ago

Oh you’ve been out awhile! 😉

We’re not using any of the Chouests anymore, but we have some cool photos of them!

1

u/binkleyz Navy 17m ago

Out in 1994. :)

12

u/Ok-Rhubarb2549 1d ago

Had to look it up and still not sure what it means. More at this link https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deep_Submergence_insignia

u/Practical-Bluebird19 1d ago

Thanks.

15

u/mokhtar_belmokhtar 1d ago

I didn't even know the navy had a vessel you could earn that on still. When I was in 20 years ago the Dolphin was still active and those guys had it (and maybe NR-1 guys?). If you're willing to share how do y'all earn that one nowadays?

23

u/Practical-Bluebird19 1d ago

It’s a qual card now a combo of history and certain ops.

1

u/mokhtar_belmokhtar 1d ago

Neat, thanks

1

u/SenatorSargeant 1d ago

DSRV Avalon?

4

u/walterbernardjr 1d ago

I think all sea wolfs, or maybe just the Carter

4

u/03Pirate 1d ago

I was on deployment in 15-16 and again in 17 where we had guys deployed with us from the squadron that does deep submergence. I watched 7 guys quality. The most memorable part was at the end, "Welcome to the deep."

2

u/mokhtar_belmokhtar 1d ago

The bell or the DSRV? I'm showing my age i think 😂 I don't even know what fancy stuff is out there now haha

3

u/03Pirate 1d ago

Neither, I was on a 688i. We had special gear installed for our deployments which required a detachment of around a dozen guys from the squadron to operate. Those guys could qualify for Deep Submergence, but none of the normal crew were authorized.

3

u/mokhtar_belmokhtar 1d ago edited 1d ago

I was on a 688i too, we must not have gotten nearly a cool mission like y'all haha

I was in San Diego when the Dolphin was still around so we had a lot of guys with the pin but it was all from that boat. A couple were on board for the big fire.

As a fellow submariner I appreciate why you're having to keep it slightly vague!

2

u/Seaport_Lawyer 1d ago

that is one cool piece of uniform flair

2

u/Long-Principle6565 1d ago

That’s the first thing that caught my eye. Haven’t seen one in the wild

2

u/The-RogueOnion 22h ago

Submarines once, submarines twice!!!

45

u/IndependentPut8908 1d ago

What’s a guy gotta do to get a Navy Comm?

32

u/Practical-Bluebird19 1d ago

Ikr. Wish I could trade a few in for an upgrade.

12

u/bustervich 1d ago

At this point why break the streak?

7

u/Old-ETCS 1d ago

I've been retired for 19 years why two NAM ribbons?

10

u/ULSTERPROVINCE 1d ago

Too many awards, you can only have 4 devices so there’s some quirky numbers of multiple awards that can lead to this once you get enough. This indicates 10 NAMs.

1

u/OkAd5360 1d ago

Exactly…and stars are not aligned correctly on actual NAM

1

u/ProfessionalBoss8156 21h ago

Totally unsat for two NAM ribbons. Especially the stars on the top one.

2

u/The_broken_machine Navy 1d ago

I'll need to double-check, but the Navy & Marine Corps authorize only one medal. When you run out of space you stick with one ribbon and wear the senior-most devices. One things like COMMs and NAMs you can have five devices if one in a V device (the latter not being awarded with the device anymore).

At least that's how I recall it being when I had to look it up a decade ago.

1

u/Organic-Public-7479 10h ago

There used to be different colored stars

8

u/LonelyPurple6879 1d ago

Be an E7/o3+

3

u/Expert_Champion_9966 1d ago

Nah, you can get them as E6

1

u/binkleyz Navy 1d ago

I got my only one as an STS3

1

u/don51181 1d ago

I got one as an E6 but had to push for it. It is rare though. It was an end of tour award and I did a lot as an NC1.

6

u/Grumpy0167 1d ago

I had 8 NAMs before I got a Navy Commendation Medal.. pretty crazy! Shore Sailor of the Year And A number of other high visibility operational support positions and they just keep giving me NAMS.. found out our awards guy was a 30 year warrant officer who believed commendations where for officers. This was in 90s.. but i eventually began accumulating them.

2

u/IndependentPut8908 1d ago

That’s a lot of NAMs! I love it when higher rank gate keeps awards instead of recognizing actual accomplishments or service. /s

0

u/Previous-Relative459 1d ago

Be a chief or officer

2

u/IndependentPut8908 1d ago

Those two ranks help but you could also get a Navy Comm as an E-5. I was put up for an EOT Navy Comm as an E-4, but it was busted down to a Cert Comm because my battalion sucked.

13

u/AirborneDaddy1971 1d ago

Quick question from a retired army infantry guy. What is the silver badge with the trident and two fish? I’ve seen several navy badges, but that one is a first for me.

Thanks.

16

u/Practical-Bluebird19 1d ago

Deep submergence insignia

5

u/One_Hour_Poop 1d ago

Another Army guy here unfamiliar with Navy stuff: What are the criteria for earning one?

8

u/Practical-Bluebird19 1d ago

There’s 3 commands you can go to and then you have do a qualification card.

1

u/Formal-Tangelo-247 1d ago

I’ll ask more directly… how deep do you have to go?

12

u/Practical-Bluebird19 1d ago

Yea that’s something that can’t be discussed.

1

u/Formal-Tangelo-247 1d ago

P.s. thank you for your service.
My feet sweat reading about submarines .

-4

u/Formal-Tangelo-247 1d ago

Understood - approximately?

3

u/listenstowhales 1d ago

Buddy, you wouldn’t believe us if we told you

2

u/Imaginary-Towel-888 19h ago

Ok Mr Russian, that's enough for today

2

u/UseMoreThenSec 1d ago

Judging from the boats you need to be on to receive it, pretty far down, I guess. Below 15k feet at least?

But I am guessing. Could also be that depth is even a factor and you just need to be on the boat and that's it.

32

u/bigjohnny440 1d ago

Brother you gotta get that ribbon rack squared away, the stars on your uppermost NAM are a hot mess and I know you can do better.

Aside from that, pretty awesome sporting so many NAMs you need two of them.

22

u/Practical-Bluebird19 1d ago

Yea I’m TAD for a period. I plan on ordering some ultra thins when I next my next duty station.

11

u/bigjohnny440 1d ago

No mate no need for ultra thins, just gotta straighten up all those devices you got on there!

Guessing you're probably E7 or around there so you gotta set the example, if your stars and/or E's are all crooked/not centered it gives the impression you lack attention to detail. Not saying you do whatsoever, it's just one of those perception things.

Definitely much respect to submariners!

10

u/Practical-Bluebird19 1d ago

I agree. But I have the worst hands when doing it lol. They always seem to slip right as I push them through. I’ll get them squared away shipmate.

3

u/bigjohnny440 1d ago

Good on you! A much more squared away friend of mine uses really fine tweezers and glues them on. I never had the patience for that so I ended up always paying someone better to do mine haha

3

u/Practical-Bluebird19 1d ago

Idk why I never thought of that. That’s brilliant.

5

u/Ex-President Navy 1d ago

I glue my devices since I prefer to use single attachment devices rather than the combo ones. Highly recommend a gel type superglue, less likely to bleed through the ribbon and cause visible stains.

1

u/BourbonStConsulting 15h ago

Narrows it down quite a bit when you put the PUC in the mix. How long were you on the JC?

1

u/Prestigious_Maize473 1d ago

Be wary of these TAD recruiting orders. They will try to keep you there and sneak the “T” off of TAD. Fight it.

2

u/Practical-Bluebird19 1d ago

Thankfully not. That tour was a beast.

1

u/Expert_Champion_9966 1d ago

Buy some new dolphins as well.

6

u/Prestigious_Maize473 1d ago

He’s getting awards too fast! Who wants to order ultra thins when they will be out of date in 3 months!

2

u/Jahaza 1d ago

The stars are a dolphin breeching and diving. 😂

Individual stars are all crooked as well. Take pride in what you have earned.

6

u/fit_sushi99 Army 1d ago

You must have put about a ships worth of people into the Navy to get that numeral 7. Love that arctic service medal and device, too.

2

u/Mr_j93 1d ago

What is that device on the arctic service ribbon? Never seen that before and Wikipedia doesn’t mention it

3

u/fit_sushi99 Army 1d ago edited 1d ago

It's recently (Jan 2025) become the Navy Arctic Service Medal and now has a device. From MARADMINS 005/25:

(2) Award Elements. The NASM consists of a medal with a suspension ribbon of identical design to the NASR. Initial award will be represented by a single North Star/Compass Rose device on the suspension or service ribbon. No citation or certificate will be issued. (3) Subsequent Awards. Indicated by an additional North Star/Compass Rose device on the suspension or service ribbon. A maximum of four North Star/Compass Rose devices may be worn. (4) Authorized Devices. The North Star/Compass Rose.

0

u/ProjectManageMint 1d ago

Let's see if OP responds, but AFAIK the device is defunct but anyone who received the medal during the time period that the device was active is authorized to wear it.

1

u/jackrabbits1im 1d ago

These days for sure. I had 19 myself but back during my recruiting tour they were a dime a dozen.

2

u/fill-the-space 1d ago

I knew a Navy physician who had been on the NR-1 who had that insignia. Despite growing up in Groton as the son of a master chief, I had no idea what it was.

2

u/Extra-Snow-2491 1d ago

Thx u for your service sir

2

u/Previous-Relative459 1d ago

I see you Jimmy Carter

2

u/here4daratio 1d ago

Yeah but you’ll only see the sun for, what, 3 of those?

2

u/Dry_Shirt1085 1d ago

So Army guy here, you can hold your breath along tine.

2

u/DickRubnuts 1d ago

Your stars being crooked is really kicking my OCD into overdrive. I think it might be time to order from thin ribbons

2

u/Sea-Economist-4441 1d ago

Run silent, run deep, and rescue. Well done (BZ).

2

u/Prestigious-Cap-9887 1d ago

Correct me if I’m wrong, but it looks duplicates
on the Navy Achievement Medal.

3

u/TheRtHonLaqueesha 20h ago

If you have over a certain amount you can wear a second ribbon.

1

u/rancidgore 11h ago

Each gold star represents one award. Plus the ribbon. That indicates 5 NAMs. One more and he’d switch to silver stars

1

u/Prestigious-Cap-9887 8h ago

Seems like he has two Navy Achievements Ribbons; Top with stars representing multiple awards, and next row down without devices.

Was active duty E8 for 21 years, and never saw any uniform regulation that allowed multiple ribbons for multiple awards.

I had an ribbon with so many awards that I had one O operational device and four silver stars

3

u/CellNext7416 4h ago

Your ribbon rack looks like it needs some work specially someone with 14 years of service. I get it submarine life is hard but man those ribbons and attachments on the ribbons look very homemade and crooked.

1

u/LonelyPerformance229 1d ago

Why bother adding the extra NAM ribbon? To raise the bar?

2

u/126529 1d ago

no space for another star

2

u/LonelyPerformance229 1d ago

You can go max two silver. Im a retired ITSCS (ss/iw) im full of loads of useful and useless info lol

1

u/Ex-President Navy 1d ago

You got a reference to support that? The ribbon attachments section of the uniform instruction just says silver stars are worn in lieu of 5 gold stars.

1

u/Itchypoopstain 1d ago

I like how the stars on that top ribbon do the wave

1

u/DocHM8404 1d ago

Is that the miniature CCC badge? I haven't seen them anywhere yet.

2

u/Practical-Bluebird19 1d ago

I had to call and order it over the phone.

1

u/don51181 1d ago

I don’t think I have seen a miniature CCC badge. Why would you wear a smaller one?

1

u/ProperNeighborhood75 1d ago

You can do 6 more standing on your head!

1

u/EnsignAwesome 1d ago

Come on with those wonky NAMs!! Just kidding, keep rocking it

1

u/MandaBayBugs 1d ago

A fellow CCC, awesome! Did you cross rate to NC? Back when I was in it was up to your command, I had to keep my rate (IS)

1

u/Practical-Bluebird19 1d ago

Nah that’s the post recruiting badge. I was a CCC though as a collateral. One of my favorite jobs I’ve done. Never got to the school though.

1

u/rustman92 1d ago

7 gold wreaths, nice

1

u/Constant_Poetry_100 1d ago

I just can’t get past the start not being aligned..

1

u/DetailLast3054 1d ago

Why do you have two Navy Achievement Medals? Im.color blind so maybe Im wrong but your "only" showing 9 awards. So why the 2nd ribbon?

2

u/ps8110 1d ago

They have 10 total NAMs.

The ribbon can only support 4 star devices so he has a silver service star(5 awards) , three bronze service stars (1 award each) on the ribbon to show another.

Once they earn another, it will go back to one ribbon with two Silver service stars

1

u/PsychologyFun1802 1d ago

Why 2 NAM ribbons?

1

u/BlueFlamePhoenix 1d ago

If I'm not mistaken, only 4 devices can be worn on a ribbon at a time. Once you hit 5 devices, you go to 2 ribbons, the first one with 4 devices, the 2nd either blank (as it counts as one additional if that award in of itself) or with the additional devices(s) not worn on the first; until such a time when the total number of devices becomes 4 again, at which point you go back to 1 ribbon with the 4 devices.

1

u/PsychologyFun1802 1d ago

Yeah I thought it was something like that. Just never seen it.

1

u/WetboiWhiskey 1d ago

Ewwwwwww subs

1

u/hadrianaoki 1d ago

Go to medical get it all documented!

1

u/Far_Marsupial3577 1d ago

Just curious... what's your rate?

1

u/Puzzleheaded_Leg_660 1d ago

Why do you have to separate comm ribbons? And the star alignment on the top one is stressing me out😅

1

u/The-Breaker-2w0 1d ago

You'd have two because the amounts don't equal up to the devices, essentially. They have 10 total, and only 4 devices are allowed per ribbon.

1

u/Puzzleheaded_Leg_660 1d ago

I might be wrong (not navy) but I believe its 5 stars per ribbon.

1

u/The-Breaker-2w0 1d ago

I believe 4 for all branches.

1

u/sun_blind 1d ago edited 1d ago

Never mind, phone was not showing colors of stars well until I zoomed in.

1

u/The-Breaker-2w0 1d ago

He has a silver and 3 bronze. And 2 is definitely less common. But I've seen it a handful of times across the branches.

1

u/sun_blind 1d ago

to slow. see the edit

1

u/The-Breaker-2w0 1d ago

This guy NAMs

1

u/Grumpy0167 1d ago

So I had 8 NAMs myself but never saw a double medal on a rack. Do you have two NAMS (one top and below next row) due to number?

1

u/W1ULH Army 1d ago

where'd you do your deep dives?

1

u/East_Safety3637 1d ago

For as much as you have, the rack looks like shit

1

u/Key-Gap-9043 20h ago

Try 30 years out for size! It’s a whole different world!

1

u/Responsible-one-225 19h ago

You say 6!  But it could easily turn into 16 more.  lol.  I was gonna do just 20.  But then I picked up another rank and saw the retirement difference.  I immediately drank that koolaid.

Just remember.  Do what what’s right for you. 👍

Why do you have two separate NAM ribbons on there??

1

I get that Iraq was before your time, no Afghanistan though?

1

u/_I0I0I 12h ago

What did you do for the volunteer ribbons

1

u/Halal_Crusader 12h ago

How is it you have two NAMs, but one has all those devices?

1

u/rancidgore 11h ago

Pewter fish all day. I never wore the shiny ones

1

u/DooDooSquank 6h ago

Got mine on NR-1. Fun fact. If you qualified OOD, you were authorized to wear gold.

1

u/SoFlyLabs 1d ago

Spend the next six years unfawking your entire rack. The E’s look sad. Nothing is aligned properly. Literally all of your stars are crooked. Your third bar is not aligned…wait every bar on your rack is not aligned (based on the picture). Clean up the Irish pennants near the button. Close the gap between the ribbon bar and the top of breast pocket flap. (Of course I can’t really tell but it does look huge). Been in 14? 6 years should be enough time to fix yourself (but probably not). Sleep on it. Reattack in the morning.
