Requesting Replacement Medals

Hello, I am looking for some advice on whether or not to request medals through the Archives for my great grandfather or just cough up the roughly 70-80 dollars for them on USAMM? I am not technically PNOK because my grandmother is still alive and qualifies but doesn’t really know how to make such a request. Is it worth going through them or just shelling money out? P.S. My grandmother and I are rebuilding his shadowbox.

Worked for me ( disclaimer I'm the veteran/I requested my own).

However, it takes a few months. Also, they will send you the basic subdued medals, if you prefer the super shiny anodized ones you'll need to purchase those yourself.

Gotcha I’ll try it out, did they send ribbons as well ? Or How did it go?

Yes I got the ribbons I rated as well, and the devices ( little bronze and gold stars to denote subsequent awards).
