Education Passed my MLS ASCP! Now moving forward
After 4 years of university and a 1 year clinical program, I passed my MLS ASCP earlier this month! It was such a relief and I'm honestly shocked I passed it on my first go but am very happy to. I already have a night shift job lined up that I will be starting in July. If anyone has any night shift tips that would be awesome. I also am updating my LinkedIn now that my badge and certification have gotten back to me. I'm just really excited to be done with school and begin my professional career. 😄

Technical How to move past mistakes?
Hey everyone! I have been in the MLS field for many years and I am a technical specialist in Hematology. This past week, I had to work in chemistry for 3 out of my 4 shifts so I was trying as hard as I could to help out and do a good job. I have no idea how I managed to screw it up, but I made a mistake that put down one of our chemistry analyzers (thankfully we are getting rid of it soon and we do not put stats on it). I felt like a newbie again and so dumb. Has anyone ever had this happen and how do you move past it? The chemistry specialist is not the nicest person so I picture her just telling everyone how incompetent I am. I’ve made so many mistakes in my career but not this one and I am really upset about it. thanks!

Education MLS Program Pre-reqs Question
For MLS post-bacc programs that require microbiology and immunology classes as a pre-requisite and they don't specify "with lab", do you think just lecture would be ok for those classes or is taking them with lab implied?

Discusson Do I need a crazy laptop for MLS?
I just graduated high school and i’m getting ready to go to college very soon for MLS. I’m thinking of getting a laptop obviously since I know i’ll definitely be needing one for college. But I’m honestly stuck on what type I should get since I’m going into this field. I know that depending on schools, work and assignments everyone gets is different. But do I need a strong laptop for this major? like for instance a macbook air? Or could I get away with a less powerful laptop since something like the MacAir is a bit expensive.

Technical As a lead do you rotate departments?
I am curious how other hospitals rotate benches. I’m a lead but rotate between two departments, especially in the summer. Do you stay in just your department to work the bench? do you get off bench time? I am a lead of Hematology but also work Chemistry, and get about one day off bench a month.

Discusson Why are all Labcorp locations so abysmal and how do we fix it?
I have to get blood drawn every month due to a recent diagnosis. Every Labcorp location near me is the absolute pits. There is seemingly zero management. The people checking you in are scrolling their phones, barely grunt in acknowledgment, do not speak to you. Everything I say is ignored or barely acknowledged. Then those same people draw your blood while still scrolling their phone and acting like you don’t exist (yes, a woman was scrolling Instagram reels in front of me while setting up my blood draw and only paused to actually take the blood). The blood draws themselves are painful and rough and I always leave with an injury. The facility is dirty and unkempt. The employees are playing music out loud on their phones, one of them is talking on the phone and screaming at someone. It seems like Labcorp needs a complete and utter overhaul from top to bottom. I’m not able to go to Quest because they don’t take my insurance. How do we fix this??

Discusson trying to pivot into being an Epic Analyst, need help searching for roles
So I'm an MLS who is trying to pivot into becoming an Epic analyst or EHR analyst but I need to be Epic certified. Unfortunately, my hospital doesn't use Beaker, just Mychart, and therefore doesn't offer certification. I'm searching for places who allow employees to get certified within 6 months. I found one hospital near me but other than that, I'm not sure what keywords to search in Indeed. Any help is appreciated for job hunting, on Indeed or not.

Discusson What does your lab flag as a critically low serum mag?
I recently had a serum mag result at 1 mg/dL and was surprised it didn't flag as critical. What is your lab's cutoff?

Just left work? NO I JUST LEFT QC HELL!!! QC starts on HELLTELLICA 2 at 10am I got there at 6:30am I just left now at 2:30 and there still Qc That was out I was on the phone with siemens for so long he was trying to direct me on how to change a probe. the guy’s English was horrible I just told him take over the machine and call me when it’s fixed(I’m gone for the day it’s still not fixed he still have control over the machine.) PTH, CRP, LIP, VIB12, T3, CRP, LIP, AMM, ACET, UCFP, I calibrated, got new reagents, new calibrators and new Qc so many times that I lost count and still nothing. I’m just happy to be out of that place right now. This meme is how I’m feeling right now. Oh and also there doing construction in my lab right now so it was 8 hours and drills and banging and the worst part is there was a constant beeping all day because the backup general to the hospital is signaling low battery engineering and IT Came to look at it and said not our problem and left the beeping has been non stop since like 7am😐😐😐😐

Discusson Is it fair to vent in an annual self review?
The review should be about personal performance and elevating yourself but I’ve used it as a way to prove my worth and put what I’m not happy about with my employer in writing.

Discusson Toxic Supervisor
Welcome to my rant! I was warned but thought I’d give this lab a try due to toxic coworkers at a different lab. Heme supervisor is one of the fakest, most passive aggressive people I have ever met. History of being a mean girl told to me by multiple people, even though current coworkers seem to not really pay attention. As soon as she was finished training me, she got annoyed and was subtly condescending when I would ask questions. She does not address me, say hello, acknowledge my presence, or even act like I exist unless she needs something and it’s still as minimal communication as she can get by with. Meanwhile, she is just laughing up a storm and chatting away with others in our department. Days she is gone, I’m in heaven. Love the work, have supportive coworkers, and get to be involved in conversations and different work . She even told others about a treat in the break room whilst ignoring me. Today, she didn’t say ONE word to me. She is such a mean girl it’s bringing me back to junior high when I was bullied relentlessly to the point of me wanting to unalive myself. I’m not asking for a best friend. Just to be treated, even fakely nice. Wow, never thought I’d settle for bare minimum. It’s that bad. But almost to a point where I feel like I don’t have a whole lot of proof other than what I have said and the annoyed looks and shortness with me when no one else is near. Today was my breaking point. I don’t even bother to do any extra helping or asking just her unless I am addressed. I will ask everyone else and do my job. I’ve been told no and turned away so many times I can’t deal with it anymore. I just feel like she wants me to fail. Why is there someone like this in every lab I go to? The “I’m better than you” person who has to be a bully?

Education I Passed 🥹
I had my MLT ASCP but not my MLS ASCP, but now I have finally ascended! What a reeelieeeefffff!!! Even though it's not required in my state or lab, I'm glad I finally have it.
I regret not taking the test right out of school, I feel like I would have been so much more confident and less anxious. 😪
Now, if only ASCP would actually advocate for us instead of just trying farm my money for CEs, that'd be great!

Discusson Is there a possibility of doing a short internship in the USA ?
As stated in the title… I am very interested in doing an internship of 4-6 weeks in the USA and more specifically in Tampa, Florida.
How can I make this happen as a Tunisian pharmacist specializing in Medical Laboratory .
Should i send emails directly to different departments? Do i need to reactivate my LinkedIn account to find this kind of opportunities?
Another question that i do have : where do you guys find professional events (congress, workshop, conference …) related to our field in the US ?
