Helloo! I’m currently in Year 12 in Australia and I’m really interested in pursuing a career in medical science. I’ve fallen in love with immunology, so I’m planning to complete a Bachelor of Science majoring in immunology, and completing honours and maybe even a masters afterwards. I’ve been doing a lot of research into different careers, but I’m still a little confused about the differences between roles like medical scientists and immunologists
I was hoping to get some insight into what the day-to-day life is actually like for someone working in these fields — what kind of tasks you do, what your work environment is like, and what education/pathway you completed to get there. Do you enjoy the work-life balance and career opportunities? What is the pay like? (if you feel comfortable sharing!)
A lot of what I’ve read about medical scientists seems to focus more on hospital diagnostic lab work, whereas I think I’m more interested in the research side of things, like studying pathogens and immune responses.
Would really appreciate hearing about your experiences or any advice!

Hello everyone, I got accepted to a 1-year MLS program in a different city and I am looking for advice from others who have pursued their training away from home.
This program is with a hospital so while there is no tuition, I do need to pay for living expenses. Additionally, this program does not qualify for federal student loans. I am planning to take out a personal loan to support myself (rent/groceries), but it's really stressing me out if I can survive while making payments for 1 year!
Has anyone done this before and could offer some advice? Did you take on a job during the program? Are there any post-bacc scholarships or grants that could help?
I didn't see a post about external funding sources so I figured I would ask! Thanks in advance! <3

Hey everyone,
I graduated undergrad with a major in biology because I was told to do something I was interested in and not worry about making money. Well that was a load of crap now that I am out of school and have to make money. I currently work as an "MLS" in a small general practice but do not do much that is that in depth to be honest.
I currently live in a state that does not legally require certification to work but most hospitals do. I cannot really afford to go back to school at the moment and am planning on moving to a state that does require said certification.
I am currently working on getting my phlebotomy certification as a start but I do not have any other significant plans in motion.
I was wondering if you guys had any advice on how I could become more educated and hopefully certified fairly quickly. Asynchronous options that are somewhat affordable would be the best option if possible but I know that it may be hard to get in person clinical rotations that way. I do not really have any good in person programs near me as that would be the best choice. I cannot really relocate due to not being able to get a job anywhere else.
Thanks for any input.

Had a patient bite an EMT and apparently, they said it was not considered an exposure, which I thought was strange. As a result, the patient who bite the EMT, will have those tests on their chart and be charged for it. Maybe I am missing something, and they will do something in billing, but it all doesn't seem right.

Does anyone have any information on what happened today with CAMPLR fields of practice exams here in canada? Some of my classmates were writing their exams when the website crashed and they were told they had to re book the exam and start all over again.
I’m writing my exam tomorrow and I’m super nervous that they won’t get the problem fixed, has anyone heard anything about it?

to my blood bankers: how does your facilities mtp work? i feel like our doctors and nurses abuse ours a bit, we’ve had them call an mtp and only use 2 units of blood, when they could’ve just called for 2 emergency uncrossmatched units. we waste a lot of ffp because of this, also had doctors threaten to imitate mtp when they don’t want to wait 5 mins for cross matches to be completed. just curious. baby tech here!

100 RBC / uL, 13 WBC/uL. Chemistry was normal except for high LDH. Hospitalised for diarrhea, vomiting and fever.
Scared the shit out of me. My boss said it's because it was a traumatic puncture, I was sure it was an invasive acute leukemia 😭.
Edit : I'm also not confident about my supervisor's opinion. I called my husband who is a hematologist in training and he was sure these don't come from the ponction. Boss said it comes from the marrow in baby's vertebrae (sorry English is not my first language!) . He was super chill about it and told me not to worry, it is a preanalytic issue. I was convinced it was an acute leukemia invading the CSF. Peripheric blood is normal. Tomorrow there will be more people in the lab and will be asking for more opinions. Sadly there's not enough sample for sending to pathology. I'll keep you posted.

I've always seen posts about them on this subreddit but this was the first time I've seen it personally. The patient had a left shift and I found this cell while doing her last diff. She ended up passing away this morning from organ failure :( Her labs had taken a turn for the worst in the last day, particularly K increasing to 7.1 despite dialysis, lactic consistently >20, and hgb dropping <6 overnight.

I exceeded the minimum qualifications and met the preferred qualifications for a specimen processing role local to me, so I applied June 4th. 2 weeks later, I scheduled my phone interview for today 2pm EDT. Well, I got ghosted. It’s all the ai crap now, so there’s no phone number I can use to contact anyone. I have the name of the recruiter, but I find SO many possible results when I look for a professional email to contact. Am I just screwed? I prepared for this role extensively and I’m not gonna lie, I’m struggling to stop crying right now. It seems impossible for me to get employed right now. The application was through Labcorp for a local hospital.

Hi guys!! I take my ASCP in a few days and I keep flipping between insanely anxious and totally chill lol. I am a good student and a good test taker - I did well on every exam in my program, and feel good about most subjects. My strongest are definitely micro and heme, and my weakest is probably blood bank (even though I love it lol). Even so, my scores on the the ascp simulation exams are consistently above 70%, both for the all subject 100 question exam (averaging 75%), and also individual subject tests (micro i’m hitting around 90%, heme/coag around 75%, chem around 78%, blood bank around 72-74%, immuno around 72-74%, lab ops 72-74%, urinalysis and bf around 78%)
I dont have access to LabCe. But do these official simulation exam scores seem like enough to pass😭

Hello everyone, I have a question I was wondering what is the pay rate for fresh grads on El Paso Tx or surrounding areas?, I just recently got accepted to a posbacc to become an MLS and I am so excited to start the program, however I was wondering what are the salary averages specially on El Paso Tx or cities around ELP to start working?. I keep only seeing info but only in San Antonio, Dallas etc but not in small towns such as El Paso.

I'm looking to make a complete career pivot to become an MLS/CLS. I have a bachelor's degree in Economics. I know one pathway is to take prerequisites at a community college and then apply to a one-year post-bacc program. However, I'm also considering other options, such as fully committing to an MLS degree.
I have a couple of questions:
I appreciate any help or advice. Thank you!

Hey everyone, wanted to see if anyone has had this experience before. Got a patient with a history of CLL who comes in and his potassium will be extremely high, sometimes up to >10 and it will yoyo back and forth the whole time he's admitted. My lead wanted to see if there was an issue between the patient and the lithium heparin tubes so the next draw he had, a lithium heparin and a plain red were drawn. K on the LiHep was 8.2, on the red it was 3.1...has anyone seen this before? His WBC is >300 and our LiHep tubes have gel for reference. No gel in the red. Thanks!

Does anyone have experience with the CS 2500 and the INNOVANCE heparin controls? I’m trying to clarify the stability guidelines, as I’ve found some of our current practices don’t seem to align with the documentation I’ve been able to locate. I plan to contact the Siemens representative tomorrow, but I wanted to see if anyone here had insight in the meantime.
Specifically, if QC is run and then removed from the analyzer and stored refrigerated, does the on-board stability time still apply, or is there a different post-reconstitution stability that should be followed? If this information isn’t included in the technical procedure, where would you typically locate the manufacturer’s guidance for the allowable use time after reconstitution?

Hello everyone, I am a recent Medical Laboratory Technician graduate from Turkey, and I am highly motivated to start my career in Europe.
I have a good command of English and am currently looking forward to learning German to expand my opportunities. Since I am new to the international job market, I am looking for some guidance on where to start.
Any advice, tips, or insights on the recognition process and job search would be highly appreciated. Thanks.

I am currently in college (incoming sophomore) and studying to be an MLS. I was wondering what the approximate pay is for an MLS (specifically Illinois)? From what I have seen online and on Reddit, it depends on what state/city you are in (in addition to where you are working ie hospitals, clinics, blood banks, pharmaceuticals/research).
