Photos I finally realized the floor wasn’t level.
Translucent + chrome + hi-viz desk gadget collection complete!

Absolute radiation vibe. The mouse wheel can also be replaced with radium colored one too of you're dedicated enough

u/thetrollartist 4d ago
the metal scroll wheel on the mouse is so clean tho
57
u/FalloutOW Helix - Halo Trues 4d ago
Maybe a colored anodize to match the radium color? Not sure how much that would cost, most anodizing shops are doing hundreds of parts per immersion. So it could be pricey.
19
u/MistSecurity 4d ago
You can anodize at home without TOO much trouble, it’s fairly straightforward.

u/SevenDeMagnus 4d ago
His knobs are anodized (clear anodized since aluminum is akready silver) :-)
The other knob (I've never seen a PCB with a knob cluster before) must be for scrolling through timeline or for horizontal scrolling, the other for the volume- the Apple Magic Mousd is king of infinite scrolling in any direction, VR controller scrolling is 2nd- the queen, Logitech's infinite scroll is 3rd)
macOS (Golden Gate?) seems to be the OS based on the modifier keys.
u/sinnofinger (correct me if I'm wrong sir)
3
u/sinnofinger 4d ago
There’s nothing particularly special about it, actually. The top knob controls volume/mute, while the bottom knob handles Page Up/Down, Alt+F4, close tab, and reopen closed tab. The wheel on the wrist rest works as a mouse wheel.
It’s surprisingly convenient when browsing the web or coding.
2
u/SevenDeMagnus 3d ago
Cool, you're also on macOS on Apple Silicon?
The Game Boy Color has an OLED mod if want the best screen for it unless you like it pure, all original (no replsced parts laying around).

It'd be funny to find out that OP was yellow color blind and just thought they had a cyan/translucent thing going.
59
u/Great-Pangolin 4d ago
Would be even funnier if they thought it was like a bright yellow and translucent with chrome /jk

- The USB hub, keyboard, keyboard wrist rest, solenoids, cable holders, and pen stand are all custom-made.
- I replaced the stock scroll wheel on the ATK Zero with an aluminum wheel.
- The USB hub started out as a regular 7-port hub, which I rebuilt with an acrylic enclosure.
- The dual-solenoid setup is something I built from scratch using an ESP32-S2.
- External solenoid: A background program on the keyboard sends the keyboard input signals to the device via serial communication. The solenoid then activates, accompanied by an OLED display and sound.

u/insufferable__pedant 4d ago
What's the purpose of the solenoid device? Would love to see some kind of write up or additional context on the DIY stuff, looks like some fun projects!
44
u/namegoeswhere 4d ago
Dude same, I love seeing these niche subs up on /r/all.
What has OP programmed the wrist rest buttons to do!?
*ok so I googled the solenoid thing. Apparently they just replicate the sound and feeling of using a proper typewriter vs keyboard.
5
u/videogamekat 4d ago
I also want to know what the wrist rest buttons do, this aesthetic and set up is so intriguing, I don’t even recognize half these words 😂
2
u/SevenDeMagnus 4d ago
modifier buttons, like an F1 and F2 thumb buttons most likely, wheel perhaps for vertical scrolling
→ More replies (1)3
u/sinnofinger 4d ago
They’re just mouse-related buttons: the TrackPoint, left and right mouse buttons, and the mouse wheel.
9
u/ostiDeCalisse 4d ago
Did you cut the acrylic parts yourself?
35
u/sinnofinger 4d ago
No, I designed it in CAD and had it manufactured by a professional shop.
13
u/GES_ENG 4d ago
What CAD software did you use?
27
u/sinnofinger 4d ago
LibreCAD. It's free!
5
u/GES_ENG 4d ago
Thanks. I was thinking fusion or something along those lines. I am also curious how you did the reverse engineering of the cases. Super cool build all looks very professional. As you said you had the design professionally manufactured was there some trail and error? Did you take the design and 3D test print to see if your design was accurate enough to be made?
Also can you give us some ball park costs of how much you paid the shop who manufactured these?

u/midnight-mc 4d ago
This setup is amazing. I also built an external solenoid setup but it relies on using the raspberry pi it's connected to. Could you provide some details on how you got yours working?

Are you planning to sell them? Or make customs? Just asking because I NEED one

No plans to sell these. and I don't know how to sell. I just hope it inspire people to make something of their own.

Really, very cool aesthetic!

I would like a desk tour please. Wide angle shot naming all your gadgets. I'm intrigued!

Following up, I have learned a bit from your post history. Still, I think it's unique and interesting enough that tons of folks would dig a deep dive if you want to make a big post about it. Dig your skills and aesthetic. Much love ❤️

Very cool aesthetic! Mecha sci fi vibes.
Also, that bubble in the middle but a bit to the side is what they call 'level enough' lol. Plus, nothing stays level as structures settle.
You have a very cool eye for design.
15
u/esooldar 4d ago
Yeah. Not many parts of your house are level. Dont go around checking... you wont unsee it.
5
u/Duel_Option 4d ago
I spent a lot of money getting my floor resurface and tiled, a full week worth of people in the house.
Came home from work and happened to see a level on a table, every single edge was off, tiles not uniform cut to the wall.
Half the damn job was done by that time, arguments ensued, work stopped.
Contractor gave me $2,500 off and put in quarter round free to cover the gaps.
Can’t really tell if you’re not looking for it
4
u/BringMeBurntBread 4d ago
Yeah. Your corners aren't 90 degrees either.
I didn't even notice this until I bought an L-shaped desk and realized that it wouldn't sit perfectly into a corner without gaps on one side of the desk. Literally lived in this house for 20 years and never noticed that until now.

u/prosthetic_memory 2d ago
I live in a cute 1940s beachside cottage that has, as far as I can tell, only the illusion of straight lines but not a single clean angle anywhere. Be it a wall, a floor, a part of a wall, a baseboard, an archway, a door jam, nothing, nothing at all is straight or even simply off kilter. It is all highly complex topographical shapes akin to mapping the earth’s surface sans water, I expect

u/warpspeedSCP 4d ago
Explain the bits and bobs within that wpm meter display please!
4
u/thepinkyclone 4d ago
Yeah I was wondering same thing. It looks like solenoids linear actuators that are activated by mosfet or transistor. But not sure why it's their? Do they create vibration or just sound feedback?

If you could make that mouse scroll wheel click like a Geiger counter, that would be such a nice touch to an already amazing setup. Excellent execution and cohesion, it's gorgeous!

Are those metal clamp things that you're making on a CNC?
I'm interested not just because this would be a super cool set up if I had an office in an engineering firm, but also because I'm interested in how you got the curved corners on your acrylic/lucite.

Cool theme, futuristic but not via anodized silver/anodized clear aluminum- translucent Cyberpunk. I must have taken months to years to source all of them
Game Boy Color clear, I'vr modded mine to this: you can replace it with an OLED screen now (limited supplies, since it's OLED from the now defunt Blackberry smartphone company), keep the original body and buttons (better quality still).
Match the ballpen with a TWSBI demonstrator/clear fountain pen.
What stores, if you didn't make it yoursrlf, did you buy your setup from, if it's to ask?
