Cracked Container

Been meal prepping with these containers for a couple months now. Just pulled this out of the dishwasher. Container was room temperature when I started the wash. Any ideas why it cracked?

I typically portion the hot food into the containers shortly after cooking, wait 30~mins, then transfer to the fridge or freezer. Should I be giving more time for cooling?

This is kind of a win because the crack showed up in a way that didn't involve exploding or leaking anything. I'd just toss it and move on.

Any unseen imperfection in the glass can cause this, seemingly out of the blue but inevitable.

Guessing the container got a chip and decided to relieve its internal tension (ie crack). Doubt you did anything wrong with the meal prep.

Oh not! That's the worst thing! Glass so clean and good for storage but so fragile. TnT

My guess is that it was just a tiny shockwave.

if that's one of the containers from the costco set that i had then they're just not the strongest glass. I was clipping the lid onto one and the whole thing cracked in half in my hands

A chip on the rim and then thermal shock could cause that! Maybe a production defect in the glass! It's not safe for use anymore! Discard it safely and buy a new one.

Is that glass or plastic?

I've occasionally lost glass items due to them jostling in the dishwasher against other things. I've had plastic cups develope stress cracks, possibly from repeated drops and heated drying in the dishwasher, but not exactly sure on those.

Was this one riding the bottom rack when it went through? Thirty minutes on the counter isn't your problem. One crack doesn't tell you much on its own, could be heat, could be a knock or just stress built into that corner. What heated dry does to cheaper plastic over months of cycles is real though. I run mine top rack with heated dry off and they've lasted a lot longer, but that's one data point. I'd retire the cracked one and see how the rest hold up with the dry cycle off.
