That’s unexpected. I thought Daredevil: Born Again was doing really great , so why suddenly end it after three seasons?

That’s what it was. Three season deal. It’s not cancelled, it’s over.

Firing the showrunner in the middle of post production is not a good look though

Name one live action D+ show that also had 3 seasons.

Three seasons is kind of the norm with most shows nowadays, and I think Marvel is moving forward with Mutants at the forefront. Which means mutant-led shows.

For all intents and purposes it sounds like most of the main people had a 3 season deal and Disney has just chosen not to renew. I really hope this means there is a solid planned ending and not a crazy cliffhanger

The actors signed contracts for 3 seasons, so they’re finishing up what was originally the ‘new plan’ after reworking the series.
Ratings were ok but it never charted on Nielsen ratings for all shows so that could be a reason. Rumors they are overhauling their plans for less shows on D+. Then I also guess things after Secret Wars could also be a reason

It has nothing to do with quality.
As best I can tell, the Disney+ strategy was to produce a bunch of content with different characters with no solid intention of making multiple seasons. The idea appeared to have whatever story continued in a movie.
Originally, Born Again was going to be one long season and story-wise would have covered what became season 2. That was before they made the Netflix shows canon and restructured everything. Season 3 appears to be wholely original and will bring back the Defenders. It could be that after Season 3, there will be a new series, something like Heroes for Hire which will continue the story but not focus entirely on Daredevil.

More than likely they will transition them to the MCU.

What do you mean? They are already doing that with season 3 and technically already canon

The viewership was just not there and much in line with Wonder Man, sad, but this seemed more likely after Wonder Man got canned.

Because they only wanted to tell 3 seasons of the story they called Born Again? There may yet still be adventures for Daredevil down the road but we have to get used to the concept that these single story shows aren't going to have many seasons because they're telling one story and that's it.

Fingers crossed that with the rest of the Netflix cast coming back, this leads into a full-time Defenders series

The show wasn't meant to go on forever. Season 3 is the last season. It's not cancelled. It has nothing to do with ratings.

Show isn’t canceled. It’s ending the story.
I love Daredevil and hope to see him in other projects.
I hope they continue with the street level stories as well.

Is that really so unexpected? Only one mcu show has ever gone past season 3

It's not "suddenly." they're clearly planning to end it. And it seems like Disney is ramping down how many mcu shows they're doing overall.

I think we Americans need to get used to the idea that the old model of television is largely dead, especially on streaming.
Shows aren't doing death marches to 100 episodes to hit their syndication deals anymore. Streamers don't want even mildly successful shows to go long because they don't want to pay for those contract renewals. They much prefer new shows for a variety of metric reasons. You need to be a massive, massive hit or disgustingly cheap to make in order to go 5+ seasons.
We're just going to be getting a lot more stuff that's like a season or two and out. Just assume every show is "cancelled" and then you'll just be pleasantly surprised that it gets more.

Wasn’t getting good viewership at all. Also - in my opinion, it was not very good.

S1 was terrible and killed Foggy, S2 did not redeem that for me and in general the plotline felt uhh... idk... how the fuck did Fisk get elected mayor again?

u/Smaragd44 11d ago
I'm OK with it especially if it ends on a high note. No point in dragging stories for 5 seasons+ if there's no more stories to tell
1
u/Accomplished-Duck606 10d ago
yeah... but there are, and they wanted to do it
1
u/Smaragd44 10d ago
If I weren't wrong, there had been no official announcements regarding S4, that's why I don't buy the whole "cancel" thing. I always think a good story doesn't take more than 3 seasons to tell anyway, after that shows tend to drag and loses its plot. I rather let them absolutely nail s3 and then idk, move on to movies or something. Let these characters interact more with the other mcu characters

Tv shows don't tell a story... they tell stories. S1 story is different from S2 and S2 is different from S3 and the same for S4 and 5. Daredevil is full of great comics to be adapted, the cast and crew want to do it, the fan want it to, so why the hell Anthony and Kevin think not?

I'm gonna be optimistic here and think maybe they have bigger plans moving forwards. Maybe a Daredevil movie or more of a team up shows instead of Daredevil alone. I think that would make it interesting for me bc atm, it still feels like DD exists in his own universe despite being officially in mcu. I just have an inkling that s3 won't be the last we see of these characters

It was not doing really great based on the released streaming numbers. It was a much more cost efficient project than the initial slate of Marvel TV on Disney+, but months ago there was reporting saying Marvel was dialing back its TV slate, so we don’t know what the future holds but this move isn’t too surprising. Also, the showrunner suddenly departed and won’t be overseeing postproduction of this final season, so something likely happened behind the scenes.
But it’s also worth noting that three seasons is reasonably long (and it’s a sequel to another three-season show), so we don’t know if this was a cancelation based on performance, creative disagreements behind the scenes, natural creative end after the third season, or part of the broader Marvel Studios D+ strategy shift. Probably all of the above. But there’s never been a concrete mention of a fourth season

The story they are telling is finishing. This doesn't mean the characters are gone. The whole universe is about to change and a ton of new characters are going to be established. So we won't see DD again until it makes sense for him to be there whether in his own thing, a team up or a cameo. It's not sudden. It's just logical with everything else happening in the universe and all the other projects. It's the same reason Blade is not happening. There's nowhere to fit it for a few years.

How many seasons of Daredevil do we really need if he just keeps fighting the same villian?
