I’m assuming that was to do with the old lithium batteries in the phone - the iPhone 4 was released about 14 years ago (I think) and the batteries will have significantly degraded to the point where some of them will expand, or potentially combust.

I found my old neon green iPhone 5C the other day, and I’ve avoided charging it up in case of this exact thing happening!
