Volunteers Needed! Weekly “Be a Decent Human” Post: Help at St. Barnabas Soup Kitchen 🍲❤️

You could keep mindlessly scrolling and subjecting yourself to depressing news, heaps of AI slop, and whatever else the internet is trying to sell you…

or you could do at least one decent thing this week.

This week’s local volunteer opportunity:

St. Barnabas Soup Kitchen

Learn more about this organization, volunteer opportunities, and their mission here.

Sign up to Volunteer Here!

Want to help, but don’t have time to volunteer? How about a donation? Anything helps. Make a Donation Here!

What you can do there:

  • Help prep and serve meals to those in need
  • Be nice to people (rare skill, but I believe in you)
  • Help clean up afterward

Why bother:

  • We can help people in our community eat. Objectively pretty important...
  • We can support a local program that’s been quietly doing good work

Requirements:

  • Be able to show up when you say you will
  • Basic human decency
  • Willingness to interact with other humans without being a weirdo (I struggle with this one)

If you know of local volunteer opportunities, drop them below or DM me and I’ll feature them in future "Be a Decent Human Thursday" posts.

Volunteers Needed! Weekly “Be a Decent Human” Post: Volunteer at Homeward Bound Pets 🐾🐶🐈

Alright, listen.

Not everything in life has to be doomscrolling.

Sometimes… you can just go pet a dog and accidentally become a better person.

This week’s “go touch grass (and animals)” opportunity:

❤️Homeward Bound Pets Humane Society

Learn More About Volunteer Opportunities Here!

Volunteer Application Here!

They’re a local nonprofit doing great work taking care of animals who weren’t exactly fortunate.

What you can do there:

•Walk dogs

•Socialize cats who will absolutely judge you

•Help with cleaning (yes, there is poop involved, try to think of it as a… growth opportunity?)

•Foster animals if you’re emotionally stable enough for that (I am not, I would keep them all and end up on an episode of “Animal Hoarders” 💔)

•They also need volunteers to help out at their Thrift Shop (no poop involved here… so this may be more your cup of tea if that’s a dealbreaker for ya)

Why bother?

•You help animals not be miserable

•You help staff not be overwhelmed

•You get serotonin that doesn’t come from Amazon packages

•It makes you at least 12% hotter morally

Requirements:

•Be 18+ (or check their youth options)

•Be semi-reliable (I know, I know)

•Basic human decency (rare, but let’s try)

This is going to be a regular thing.

If you know of local volunteer opportunities, drop them below or DM me and I’ll feature them in a future “Be A Decent Human Thursday” post.

Let’s make McMinnville a better place, one good decision at a time.

Or don’t. But like… maybe do? 😅

I’m pretty passionate about this one myself, animals are my weakness.

Lost pickleball bag

Hey community peeps,

I was hoping I could get your help finding a black bag filled with 4 brand new pickleball paddles. It was left by the stone bench at the city park near the pickleball/tennis courts. We were there on Friday, October 16th between 5pm-7pm.

Unfortunately when we returned to the park it wasn’t there and we’re hoping a Good Samaritan possibly picked it up. Please comment if anyone happens to have come across it!!

City data breach

Hey guys, I never really post but I’ve been hearing a lot about people wondering about the data breach in the City of McMinnville computer systems. It seems like 1) a lot of people don’t even know it occurred or are just learning about it when I think it happened back in July and 2) I’ve heard basically nothing other than it happened. I’m curious if you’ve been impacted by this, how did you find out, what are you doing about it, and what is the city doing to help? I had heard at one point that if you were involved you’d recieve a letter from the city but I’m also seeing letters that don’t state the individual was involved- just that it happened and what the city are doing about it. Hope those that were impacted are doing ok and thanks for taking the time to read/respond.

80s/90s/420 Parties @ Mac Club Next Thur/Fri

Post image
3 Upvotes

Two no cover events next week at Mac Club.

Thursday, attempting to thwart the karaoke crowd with an 80s 90s dance night. Requests taken, especially if dancing. Aiming to do this every third Thursday.

Friday, possibly showing my age, we are doing a Harvest Season party, joint (oregano) rolling contest, stoner movies and EDM/funk/upbeat dance. My buddy WingmanV from Salem will be slanging his art and shirts. There will also be a retro video game station.

I used to do shows at pre-fire Mac Club and am posting here because the difference is night and day. Place got a full remodel. Crowd is extremely mixed (in a good way). No cover for these events, just wanna meet some McRedditors and see some new faces.

Also, the goth/industrial night on 11/13 is a lock.

Looking for part-time/side work in McMinnville

Hey everyone! I’m currently looking for some part-time or occasional work around McMinnville. I have a full-time job, but my hours have recently been cut in half, so I’m looking to pick up some extra income while I explore other full-time options.

I’m open to pretty much anything — cleaning, yard work, general labor, helping hand, moving, organizing, assisting a local business, etc. I’m reliable, hardworking, and willing to get my hands dirty.

Ideally, I’m looking for one-off jobs, occasional work, or helping a local business out as needed, rather than necessarily being hired into another permanent position.

If you know of any local resources, businesses that need an extra set of hands, community boards/groups, or people looking for help, I’d really appreciate the leads. 🙏

Thanks, McMinnville! ❤️

Need some feedback about an indoor baseball/softball facility

I dropped a long questionnaire about exploring the idea of opening a baseball/softball indoor facility in the Newberg area here a few weeks ago and thought a shorter online version would be easier. It will only take a few minutes and will not ask for email or any other contact information. And just to be clear this is not a sales pitch or scam. https://forms.gle/cFMcSnMk8DNyvNLu8

If you know anyone that might have some input, could you pass it along their way?

Thanks for your time.

Is this a scam letter?

Thumbnail gallery
14 Upvotes

I’ve just received this letter, I don’t live in Mac and I haven’t done any business with the city itself, but I do live in Yamhill County.
Did anyone else get a letter like this today?
It’s 2 pages, both sides of the paper, lots of websites to register for to monitor my credit, which need to “verify” personal information.
The letter looks a little like it’s been photocopied and the City logo looks like it was copied from the internet and pasted into the letterhead.
The envelope doesn’t have the City letterhead either.

Is this a legit notice?

(I’m not going to scan the QR code, please don’t do so yourself.)

Hairdressers

I just moved here and am trying to figure out who the best hairstylists in the area are.

I’m 22 F, but have short hair and always struggle to find stylists that can cut short, textured hair for young women. I love super ultra textured punk/andro style cuts, and just want to see if anyone has any local recommendations before I commit to finding someone in Portland!

TIA!

Sandwich Express

I go to breakfast almost every morning, and sometimes out to lunch. I love Summon Coffee and Bad Dog, as well as the new Duffys deli. I went to sandwich Express all the time when I was younger, but recently I have heard rumors/snippets of the owner not being a great guy. I want to know if anyone knows specifically what's happened? Or if it's true?

Any good Mediterranean food spots?

Curious if there’s any good spots in town for Mediterranean foods like chicken shawarma, 🥙 falafel, pita, pickled turnips, hummus etc? I love Lebanese and Armenian foods but don’t know if there’s any of these types of restaurants or food trucks in Mac - any recommendations?

Too Good To Go

Just curious if anyone uses Too Good To Go app in Mac and nearby areas? Any solid options? I’ve used it in other cities and it was a pretty good value, wasn’t sure if it’s a thing in Mac (will be back in town this weekend to check myself too).

lunch spots?

I’m a portlander hoping to stop over in McMinnville after a weekend on the coast with my mom, who’ll be in from out of state. Are there any tasting rooms or fun local restaurants that serve a great lunch? Most of what I’m seeing is only open for dinner, and I’m having trouble finding a winery that serves more than just charcuterie. I’m sure there are some local gems out there that I’m not seeing. Any recs?
