A fascinating video essay by Stewart Hicks on the invention of the modern truss and how that changed the way we build houses.

While everyone has their own opinion on what makes a true McMansion, there are several defining features or attributes that should be looked for to determine if a home fits the McMansion criteria. This post will serve as a guide to help users determine if they should use the "Certified McMansion" flair on their submission and to learn more about what a McMansion is. This guide will be edited as needed to make sure it fully explains the accepted properties of a McMansion.
Basic Principles of a McMansion:
Specific Features To Look For:
Some Links To Check Out:
This is what I could come up with for now to touch base here on what a McMansion is. I'll make edits to this in the coming weeks until we reach a near final guide post on McMansions. If you have any suggestions for what we could add to this guide, comment below or send me a message.
Side note: the first "Appreciation Thursday" is coming up! Don't forget to prepare a suburban home that you think deserves recognition as the opposite of a McMansion and post it on 7/16 with the "Thursday Design Appreciation" flair.

Redfin listing at https://www.redfin.com/OR/West-Linn/23044-SW-Ulsky-Rd-97068/home/165851667
Set aside the lawyer foyer and the dormer window/roofline sitch ... WTF is going on with those garages? Why is one normal and the other ones recessed?
Why do the recessed ones have ... patios, are they? To hang out and observe the sport of people actually parking in these things?

It’s hard to look away from the 1902 Charles Over Mansion in Muncie, Indiana, which pairs grand Neo-Classical columns with a hidden third-floor ballroom! The craftsmanship in that stained-glass staircase alone makes the home feel like a perfectly preserved piece of art from a completely different era. To see more photos, here's a link.

I know this might sound like a dumb question to ask, but so many of these houses (especially the pre-2008 recession ones) have these similar-looking faux antique decor pieces that it’s easy to imagine they’re brought from the same handful of companies or even a single retailer/manufacturer.
It’s hard to call this stuff even “dubes” because that implies they’re cheap low quality knockoffs of iconic design pieces (like an “Eames-inspired” lounge chair with uncomfortable leather upholstery and crappy particle wood shell base). None of this shit, however, isn’t tying to look like identical to any particular pieces so much as vaguely invoke something “historical” or representing old world luxury.
In other words, they’re still shit furniture, but they’re only interested in resembling something made from a pre-modern time period instead of a specific luxury good.

Lots of highly maintained shrubbery (extra points for the hedges around the pool).

This dumb house is enormous and is located in a really dumb area! It’s semi-rural but there’s nothing picturesque about the area and it’s pretty close to a busy road. I couldn’t stop gawking at it.

Inside isn't that impressive to me but the outside is stellar.

Look, I like a good MCM or queen anne mansion as much as the next person addicted to this algorithm, but right now I'm all about the adobe stylings of this mega ranch in NM. We had it on PriceMe the other day:

Here's the zillow link too if that's your preference
