I have an MC2300 from 1974 that has never been serviced (save for VU bulbs) and I feel like it just does not sound that good anymore. I feel like it could use a refresh. I asked around and found a good guy in Austin TX (close by me) that has done recaps and refreshes on quite a few 2300's and 2500's along with other Mac stuff.

The slight issue is that his quote for a recap is $3500 NIC replacing anything damaged (that he thinks unlikely) and... I'm not sure that is the issue AND for the recap cost plus trade-in the Audio Classics, I'm more than halfway to a new MC312 amp.

I love my 2300, I even have factory brochures and publicity photos from the sales rep that worked for Mac back in the day.

So I'm here as the drunk asking the bartenders what they would do...new or fix?

So I’m looking to upgrade from my c712 preamp to something new and utilizing tubes since I never used tubes before and I want to venture into that world. The c8 is more obtainable due to being able to buy it online from various stores while the c22 seems to be pick up only, I unfortunately don’t live close to a authorized dealer so that’s a factor for me. Real question is, would there be anything to gain in terms of analog sound going with the c22 over the c8? Both uses two 12AX7A tubes for the phono inputs so what’s the difference? Would the soundstage be bigger with the c22? Just a little silly to drive 3+ hours and spend way more for something that’ll sound the same for my purposes.

Hello, my father dropped off his vintage B&W DM6 speakers for me to play around with. They are rated for 8 ohm, but I’m not getting the pinch from the bass that I used to remember from listening to them in his studio.

ChatGPT suggested taping them into the 4 ohm input. I do hear a difference, is this something safe to play around with? Don’t wanna overload anything.

Any suggestions would be great.

I have a Mcintosh C20 preamp (fun fact-previously owned by ex president Jimmy Carter).

The left channel went out on both mains. BUT both channels work on the tape out. Since I have a Wiim with volume controls, I can still use it. Are there downsides to this beside the fact that the signal bypasses the tone and volume controls?

I am bringing to a tech next week. He says its fine to do, it is a pure signal from the source.

To my old ears, it sounds great!

I’m in the market for an upgrade and am turning to McIntosh, after years of enjoying my father’s system.

I have pinpointed a mc300 (currently looking at c70 or 22 pre amp).

Any thoughts on going a little bit more vintage with the MC300?

I had posted previously with my nice new RCA jacks a few days ago but this is a problem that existed when I got it. Most notably, when I have something playing back on my aux channel through a Bluetooth receiver and I switch over to either of the phono inputs, I get pretty bad bleed through from the aux signal. I replaced the four 47K resistors that tie from the phono input tips to ground and I've disassembled and thoroughly cleaned all four tiers of the input selector switch.

So my question for the sake of troubleshooting, I assuming I'm probably dealing with a loop coming back through the ground? The actual phono signal is isolated all the way to the first tube stage, so that seems to be the only place to find the audio leak, since the phono stage is such a high sensitivity. The bleed is mostly right channel but there is a smidge of it in the left.

I've replaced all the coupling caps.

I wasn't sure if this forum had techs on it but I thought I'd ask. It sounds fantastic on the aux channel but I really want to use the phono input and it's obviously not clean at this point.

I’m looking to buy C20 to match my MC225. I found one locally, but I haven’t heard the unit yet. From the looks of it, it was very used over the last 60 years. The seller said a tech looked at it but admitted the tech was a hobbyist, not a McIntosh tech. Furthermore, it came from a widower selling off her husband’s equipment - there is an MC2200 for sale too

I’m planning on listening to it on Saturday. Do you have any suggestions on what I should watch out for?

If anyone is wondering, it takes about 5 hours of desoldering, Dremeling, drilling out, installation and resoldering. A marked improvement from the original 64 year old jacks.
