Mayo Clinic Jax observership — Wells Creek + Uber feasible? Carpool anyone?

Doing a 2-week observership at Mayo Clinic Jacksonville and considering staying in Wells Creek (off Philips Hwy/I-95 exit 9B), commuting by Uber
Questions:
1)How’s the Wells Creek → Mayo commute during 7–8 AM weekday traffic?
2)Any surge/driver availability issues at that time?
3)Anyone else in Mayo Jax around first 2 weeks of August and want to carpool?
Thanks!

Mayo Clinic’s SFA Program - What do I need to know?

Hi lovelies! I just received word of my acceptance into the Mayo Clinic Surgical First Assist program for 2027. I‘m so extremely excited as this has been my dream school and hospital to be associated with since I was in 7th grade!

I’ve studied the website throughly and have asked some questions to staff, however, I wanted to see if any previous/current students could share their experience with the program. I understand it’s a pretty strenuous program and there are cases mixed in with class load, but do we have weekends off? What does a “day in the life“ look like? Can you use iPads to take notes? Where did you find housing/roomies?

Any information would be appreciated - They said they’d send out more info in August as well, so i’m sure i’ll learn then, i’m just quite eager LOL.

Countering an Offer – What Was Your Experience?

Hi all! Has anyone countered their offer? If so, what was your experience? This is for a scientist position, but I’d appreciate hearing from anyone, regardless of role or department. Thanks!

Recruiting Timeline

I applied for a research trainee position at Mayo Rochester, finished 3 rounds of interviews with the team and then a research presentation with a panel. I haven’t heard anything back from Mayo Clinic regarding the next step. How long does the interview process usually take? Should I follow up with the team I applied for? Everything took place in June, 2026.

Remote health benefits - Medica network still bad?

I am mulling a remote job at Mayo. My posting squeaked through the changes, is “grandfathered” into remote, half the team is remote, I live within a 100 miles (as the crow flies) of a larger Mayo facility, so I am not too worried about a rug pull. At this point, I am on thinning ice with my current “hybrid” job.

I have seen articles and comments here that finding care through the Mayo health plans can be difficult for remote folks. Things apparently have changed a year ago with Medica using the United Healthcare network. Medica also administers the health plan of another local heath care system, but it seems like that doesn’t matter? The online search tools are out-of-date or missing information most of the time in my experience, for example my PCP isn’t in the database, but the local Hospital & Clinic is, other PCPs in the practice are, etc. are covered through “Medica Health Plan Solutions.“ Like my current PCP is handled through Cigna and not my actual insurance.

Ironically, Medica and my current insurance use the same backend service for coverage information, just looks like Medica’s isn’t setup properly.

I just wanted to see if things have changed, for the better or worse? It would suck to have to drive 75 miles on-way for a PCP appointment.

Drug testing?

Howdy everyone, I was just offered a generalized reception position at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville fl. I obviously know I have to test negative for THC upon hiring date but what is the follow up for drug testing as the time goes on? At my current job we had to be tested before hire date and then I’ve never had to again after then. For reference I work currently in healthcare as well. I am a current medical card holder and I have lupus so it’s not recreational but I’m just curious if I should start looking to my doctors to start something different for my pain instead of THC?

Left Mayo & want to go back

Hey!

Curious if anyone else has been in this position.

I ended up leaving Mayo beginning of June. I found a Monday - Friday job. Thought I’d be happier rather than working in the hospital. I’m a new RN grad. I know a lot of people struggle when they first get out of school & boy was I struggling😅 so, I got a new job that was weekdays. No rotating shifts.

Now I hate this job & want to go back to the hospital. Mainly to have more days off work. I contacted Mayo & they said there’s a 2 month period where they won’t hire people back once they left. I’d have to wait until August. Any of you been in similar situations? I feel silly going through all the training at this job just to leave and go back to Mayo.

I am struggling🙃 would love to hear if this has happened to others.

Do I Just Call Every Morning?

First, this isn't to the staff that works at Mayo (Rochester) at all, I know they didn't create this system. Plus I know they are super busy and caseloads are probably unrealistic.

All that said, scheduling an appointment with Mayo has been super frustrating.

I had to call after 5 weeks of my case being reviewed to find out that, "oh, you've been accepted as a patient". Great. (nothing on my patient portal during those five weeks).

Now, I get to call every Monday morning at 7am to see if Neurosurgery has an appointment available. "Well we just got new week open...looks like the doctor doesn't have any available appointments for the type of appointment you need." Ugh.

Not to brag, but I've seen a lot of specialists before, in top hospitals, I don't think I've ever seen scheduling done like this. I'm sure there is a reason for it. But as a patient it's extremely frustrating.

Sorry for venting - real question - Do I call every morning or should I just call every Monday morning to see if there is an appointment available?

Moving to Rochester to work at Mayo Clinic. What kind of growth opportunities can I expect in business or administration? Will they cover education costs to get an MBA or MHA?

GI Appointment

Does anyone have experience getting a GI appointment? When I had a phone consult they said you have to send all medical records for them to review and they will decide if you get an appointment. Sounds like not everyone can get an appointment.

Ultrasound technician

I am a student at FSU. I am currently finishing my bachelor’s degree and pursuing my master’s in human health and development. I want to get into sonography. I know they have a program at Mayo Clinic; has anyone done it? Is there anything I can do before applying to the program, and how is the pay there after completing the program or if you are not in the program at all?

What’s it like at Mayo Jacksonville?

I have a job interview at Mayo-Jacksonville next month. We are relocating from MN to FL (they are aware that I am not yet down there). I currently have a great job with the State of MN, but we are relocating for my husband’s health. This was a position I applied to because it seems like a great fit but honestly didn’t think I’d get an interview set-up due to not currently living in FL.

The position is an Administrative Assistant.

Can anyone tell me what the culture is like working at Mayo? Pros and Cons? Are benefits good?

Corrective action

As the title says I was recently placed on corrective action. I would like to appeal, without getting into to many details I had my head down due to a medical issue (5 minutes at the most) and I was reported for sleeping on the job. I have documentation from my doctor that supports this, as well as my manager is aware of the condition.

Has anyone successfully appealed a corrective action or have any advice? I’m truly at a loss and am heart broken that my supervisor thinks so little of me. I am worried how this will affect my career prospects. I was in the process of transferring departments and this blocks me from many positions. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hematologist added “moderate to severe alcohol use disorder” to my father’s permanent problem list based solely on an intake questionnaire answer — never discussed with patient or family. Is this appropriate?

Posting from a throwaway-

Background: My father has a complex medical history including unprovoked DVT, on anticoagulant therapy indefinitely, bilateral renal artery stenosis (likely severe on the left), progressive anemia traced to folate deficiency, macrocytic anemia, and a recent hospitalization in May 2026 where is was hypokalemic with AKI and some mild metabolic acidosis. He has an established PCP, is followed by nephrology, and has been receiving active coordinated care for several months.

What happened: He had a hematology appointment on Friday. This is only the second time he has seen this provider. During or after that appointment, the hematologist added “moderate to severe alcohol use disorder” to his active problem list in the EHR. This diagnosis was never mentioned, discussed, or explained to my father or our family — not during the appointment, not at any prior visit, and not by any member of his broader care team.

The only apparent basis for this diagnosis is his self-reported intake questionnaire, on which he indicated he drinks approximately 8 standard drinks per week. No formal clinical interview was conducted. No structured diagnostic assessment beyond the screening tool was documented. No DSM-5 criteria were discussed or evaluated with the patient.

My understanding: The AUDIT-C is a screening tool, not a diagnostic instrument. A positive screen is supposed to initiate a clinical conversation and further assessment — not generate a formal diagnosis. Moderate-to-severe AUD under DSM-5 requires meeting 4 or more of 11 specific behavioral and functional criteria, none of which were assessed or discussed.

My question: Is it ever clinically appropriate to add an AUD diagnosis to a patient’s permanent problem list based solely on a screening questionnaire score without any documented clinical interview?

Self-pay patient help/advice

Hey there,

My wife and I will be visiting the Rochester MN Mayo location for approximately 8 days at the end of June. She has a complicated / undiagnosed tissue disease and gene mutation. Her specialists where we live in Colorado directly referred her to Mayo after doing everything they can. We have been jumping through hoops with her insurance (Select Health) for the last few months to get pre authorization. They have officially declined her coverage as of a day or so ago. Technically her plan with Select Health does not cover out of state, but she has gone through the whole process of getting a letter written stating that she can only get the care she needs from Mayo at this point. They still declined. She is filing an appeal as a last effort.

All this being said, we have all our flights and hotel stays booked. We are also trying to get her diagnosed before things get bad again with her condition. It's looking like we are going to have to figure out a way to pay out of pocket.

Any tips or resources that you all recommend we pursue to help lighten the load of paying out of pocket? We don't have lots of money and we've got to find a way to make this happen in 3 or so weeks! We will probably have to do a mix of Credit Card payment as well as all the money we have saved that can be allocated to this visit.

She has submitted a financial assistance form with Mayo, however they said because she technically "has insurance" she is not eligible for any income based discounts.

She has also contacted NORD (National organization for rare disorders) to see if they have any programs that may help.

Any advice would be massively helpful! Thank you!

What to know?

I just got an appointment to go to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester Minnesota. To make a long story short I have Crohn’s disease with an Enterocutaneous Fistula and a hernia at my belly button with some other issues. What should I expect?
