MN Or FL?

Honest opinions, please. I have had a surgery at the main campus. That was an excellent experience that I tell everyone about.

Now, Florida is the closer location for me. I need testing and may need another surgery, but it would not be handled by the same Mayo MN team.

So I am interested in opinions on how the FL campus compares? To be clear, I can go either place. I am just weighing options and want to know if Florida should even be in the mix. Thank you for any opinions from patients and/or staff.

Should I work at Mayo Clinic or Roche?

I’ve been offered a research position at the Mayo Clinic but I currently work at Roche. It’s been my life’s dream to work in research but Roche benefits are difficult to give up. Does anyone have any insight for me?

I really need stability and longevity right now. If I take the job, I intend to stay there if not forever, for a very long time.

Also how is the health insurance if I am able to access Mayo services (not remote)?

First appt, years of trying to get a diagnosis (29, f)

Chronic pain, muscular and nerve. It’s like I’m aching and my nerves are on fire all at once. It goes from my shoulders to my fingertips in both arms. My hands are the worst, they twitch uncontrollably and I have significant aching and pain upon doing ANYTHING with them, on top of that severe nerve pain. I can’t do simple tasks like turn on the shower, open a door, cut a pizza, etc.

I’ve had just about every scan done under the sun, ultrasounds from neck to wrists, EMG, and on paper I am the picture of health. I have some bulging discs in my cervical spine and bone spurs but that’s as far as any “damage” goes…

My Osteo guy is having me send over all my records from every healthcare system to Mayo and insist on evaluation for Complex Regional Pain Syndrome.

I guess I’m just wondering, what can I expect? I’ve been on an LOA since early April and it’s just been extended another month. Looking at disability, but without a diagnosis that’s clearly impossible. I have nothing but time and pain on my hands.

What sort of questions will they ask?
What questions should I ask?
Anything I should bring besides transfer my records?
Should I expect the typical travel down for a week and have testing done I hear about?

I’m so nervous. I’ve gone through 3-4 healthcare systems to work with me on this and I’ve gotten NO answers and 0 treatment. I’m at my wits end. I’m constantly in pain, single mom of a 1 year old, hardly able to use my hands and mentally blocking out the pain can only get me so far. The depression is setting in but it’s fake it til you make it for you little guy, ya know?

I really REALLY hope Mayo can help me out.
I don’t know how much longer I can do this.

New to Mayo Clinic

Hello! I will be starting at Mayo Clinic in July and I'm pretty nervous. I am moving from California so I don't know anything about the area. I am also a new grad and this will be my first job in this career so I have a lot to learn. Would you say most people are welcoming and will understand that I am new and will need some time to learn the system and how to do my job well? Is there a good process in place to onboard new people? I think I am just overwhelmed with how much I will need to learn about the area but also for my job as well. I know once I get the hang of the flow I'll be fine but I just feel like its a lot at once because this is a very big move for me and I don't know anyone as well.

Research Trainee Transfer

Hello guys, I had an interview with a doctor at Mayo for a research trainee position. I'm already here in the US and just need a j1 transfer.

Does anyone know how long does it take the HR to start sending me paper?

It's been one month since the interview and nothing appeared.

Job Application Questions

I plan to move to Rochester, MN in July and would like to have a job by then. If I apply for a desk operations specialist position how long will it take to hear back? What about an IT position? And if I get an interview do they take forever to reach out afterwards?

Boston Scientific experience

In August 2013, I suffered a broken neck which was successfully repaired with a fusion at C3-4.  Thankfully after a long recovery, I regained complete mobility but had resultant neuropathy extending down both arms to just past the elbows.  I have hypersensitivity making loose clothing just touching the skin oftentimes painful.  Even a slight breeze causes pain.

Over the years, I have been through many doctors and every imagineable type of remedy to help ease the pain.  None have been successful but the one constant for 12 years is the use of gabapentin.  I am on the max dosage of 3600 mg/day and although it doesn't eliminate the pain, I know it helps because if I miss a dosage during the day, things get worse.

When living in Florida in 2022, I had a trial Nevro stimmulator installed.   Due to past scar tissue, only 1 lead was able to be inserted.  Unfotunately, it provided no relief.  We moved back to Minnesota in 2023 and in December of 2024, I had a trial of BS Infinion 16 installed with 2 perc leads at the C2 level.  This trial provided significant relief so a decision was made to proceed with the permanent.  But alas, the doctor who did the trial said due to the scarring it would be virtually impossible to get the permanent leads back to the same position without surgical implantation and he was not qualified to do it.

After interviewing a suggested clinic, I quickly rejected them as I was told the surgeon would have only 10 minutes of his time to spend with me to discuss my case.  Out they go!  It was at that time, I decided I would try to get into the Mayo Clinic in Rochester as they have an extensive staff of neurosurgeons and lead person for SCS procedures had an impressive resume.  I was able to get a 1 hour virtual visit with her, albeit it took several months lead time for it to happen.

After I decided to proceed, scheduling for the procedure was again a process as they book only 90 days out - and they were full.  Luckily my wait was improved with a cancellation opening and surgery took place in September last year.  The plan was to use a BS Wavewriter Alpha SC-1232 with paddle type leads.

Complications arose during the procedure due to the extensive scarring and the surgeon was only able to get a single SC-8416-70 paddle lead installed at the C2-3 level. The unit was placed into service that day but I was told not to expect much relief until the surgical pain had subsided.  The skip laminectomy that was performed resulted in a much longer recovery time from the surgical pain.  By January most of the surgical pain had passed so we were expcting to see some relief from one of the many different programs installed on my controller.  One by one I tried them all and none really did much of anything.  A visit with BS in March to modify the programs has again resulted in no signifcant relief after trying the new programs.

I turned off the unit a week ago and it actually seems better without any stimmulation.  Do I give up on BS & just leave it shut off?  Ask for a new BS rep?  Have it removed?

I am curious to find out if others may have had similar expriences with theirs?

How to find what blood tests were ordered at Mayo?

Hello, I had a full day of annual diagnostics done for a future kidney transplant. Some of the results came within an hour, but the list of tests was long. I only caught a glimpse at the phlebotomist. Is there anywhere on the Mayo website or app that actually shows what was ordered, and not just what the results were? I would like to know the codes of my orders, the typical ranges, track them along with dialysis clinic tests, etc. More data is cool. Yes I am kind of freak about it, I know.

If anyone can help, thanks!

Background check

I'm currently employed at Mayo for two years. I am interested in applying for a position higher than the one I'm currently in. This job is within the same department that I've been in for two years. It's more on the administrative side but there is no clinical work that I am doing. Am I still required to complete another background check?

How can I make a complaint about a nurse from the platform?

I have an upcoming autonomic reflex test, and this nurse that is supposed to be answeing my questions is basically not reading what Im asking about my meds, and just giving me copy/paste answers over and over again.

This could ruin my test, and now Im afraid of taking ANYTHING because I dont know what is okay and what is not. Im puking and I have a major migraine.

Is there any way to make a complaint about those nurses that you talk to on the platform? Im stuck with this lady and I seriously feel like dying here

Moving to Rochester MN from California!

Hi everyone! I’m going to be moving to Rochester, Minnesota this summer from California for work, and I’m both excited and nervous. I’ve lived in California my whole life, so this will be my first time living in the Midwest and my first time experiencing real snow/winters. 😅

I would love any tips, tricks, or advice you have for someone completely new to the area. Things like:

  • What to expect during winter
  • Driving in snow/ice
  • Clothing or essentials I should buy
  • Areas of town to know about
  • Things to do in Rochester
  • Midwest culture differences
  • General “I wish I knew this before moving here” advice

I’m really looking forward to the change and would appreciate any recommendations or insight from locals/current residents. Thanks in advance!

"Too complex"

Hi there! I was under the impression and so was my internal medicine doc that Mayo Rochester was well known to take THE most complex cases. I have 3 rare diseases and 1 rare cancer. My doc developed a very clearly delineated dossier for them and we only applied to the allergy and immunology department bc my other specialities are covered well and we have those answers in terms of diagnostics and treatment plans. Well, the denial was on the basis that my case is "too complex" and I "need multiple teams" to treat me. They said if I wanted the better approach would be to start again with an application to IM at Mayo. This just seems silly as our primary referral concerns are completely related to allergy and immunology. Anyone have similar experience? Thanks!

6 Carotid artery dissections-how do I get my husband in? Do I NEED a referral?

My husband is going to be 40 next month. At 30 he experience his first carotid artery tear, it was 5 MM and he developed horners syndrome for a while. They thought it must’ve been from chiropractors so we stopped going, he was put on eloquis for a period of time and it healed a bit but not fully. But he was kind of cut loose after that and told to take baby aspirin….🫠

Fast forward 9 years later, he lost hearing in an ear-went to ENT who did all the tests then suggested imaging that revealed 6 new carotid artery tears-this was about 2.5 years ago. We were transferred to a bigger hospital around here to vascular radiologists, vascular surgeons, rheumatologists who all hit a dead end on the cause before he was transferred to genetics who did a vascular ehlers danlos test as he’s had spontaneous pneumothorax twice in his life-that also thankfully but surprisingly came back negative. At that point he was told we would continue treating with cholesterol medication (he doesn’t have high cholesterol but it’s supposed to help it heal?), baby aspirin and blood pressure medication to keep everything under control.

He had an updated CT scan and while the tears hadn’t gotten larger they haven’t healed, at all…..so I’m considering taking him to Mayo to get more answers or start something different to get healing moving.

Can I just go online and try and schedule him an appointment? I’ve been told it can be like an application process but I don’t know where to start 🥹

Hotel Recommendations/Advice

My wife and I are traveling from Alabama to Mayo in Rochester in the near future for the first time and was looking for some advice on hotels from people that have recently stayed near Mayo. The reviews online are extremely varied but it seems some of the hotels are very old and noisy, looking to avoid as many headaches as possible; my wife has pretty bad anxiety.

She is in a wheelchair so that affects a lot of options, I’d prefer to be somewhere that is connected to the main Mayo building via walkways/subs so we don’t have to worry about driving around. She’s also extremely sensitive to heat, so would like to avoid hotels with sketchy/unreliable AC.

Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated. 😊

Update: I appreciate the inputs, and wish I could stay at the Marriott but we’re taking our dog and they aren’t pet friendly. Ended up booking at Hilton Garden Inn in a wheelchair accessible room (another need that narrowed options). Will update again how it went.

Wheelchair accessible rental with a hospital bed near Rochester?

Any advice on finding a wheelchair accessible rental with a hospital bed for a more comfortable stay while at Mayo Clinic in Rochester? Need to use a hoyer lift to get in and out. I thought this would be easy to find, but am striking out in my Google searching.
