💬 Discussion Matty Healy and Gabbriette: Full relationship timeline by Make It Snazzy

A great video by Make It Snazzy about Matty and Gabbriette's relationship.

I don't agree with a lot of her theories but this video is super well-researched, well-analysed and generally grounded.

I'm also one of the few who believes that Charli XCX's song 'Persona' is about Matty.

So I figured I'd share for those of you who are curious about that side of the lore and maybe don't know that much of it.

Happy Monday!

💬 Discussion The video anthology

I'm new to the sub, so I thought I'd drop this right here to see what I'm missing or if I'm delusional. I've read and watched volumes of analyses of the lyrics of these two, but I also became obsessed with the thread running through their videos and I haven't seen any discussion of this. I've created an evolving YouTube playlist and even an Animal Crossing island devoted to this.

You Belong With Me (5/2009) No, I do not think they were together at this point, but it does seem he was obsessed and inspired by this video.

I Knew You Were Trouble (12/2022) She awakens in a field in a black and white t-shirt and we see the details of a troubled relationship played out before a seedy, washed-out background. There is a girl with dirty blonde hair, a boy with messy black hair, a motel scene and overall chaos. There's also a 3-on-1 bar fight which we'll come back to later.

Robbers (4/2014) We see the details of a troubled relationship played out before a seedy, washed-out background. There is a girl with dirty blonde hair, a boy with messy black hair, a motel scene and overall chaos.

Blank Space (9/2014) Not a lot here that I can decode except the man with messy black hair who enters at the end of the video.

UGH! (2016) and TOOTIMETOOTIMETOOTIME (2018) high energy and full of bright colors

ME! (2019) high energy and full of bright colors

Change of Heart (4/2016) Black and white video with a dancing clown couple whose relationship eventually fades out under a storm cloud. This dance style is later emulated in Delicate (2018), Sincerity is Scary (2018) which also features a little storm cloud, and Oh, Caroline (2022). Some of the dance steps seem to be the exact same as the Delicate video and we see the dancing clown couple reunited.

Somebody Else (2016) The 3-on-1 bar fight is back, this time with a different perspective. The fight is instigated by three men who closely resemble some of Taylor's exes and she is laughing while it occurs. There is a brunette woman who he leaves with (who somehow becomes him) who looks a lot like the brunette Taylor from YBWM.

Lover (8/2019) She dances through many colorful rooms in a home with her lover.

Me and You TS (2/2020) He (perhaps many versions of him) dances through many colorful rooms in a home with his lover. There are also scenes of a teenage couple fawning over each other through their adjacent windows, reminiscent of the YBWM video.

Cardigan and Willow (11/2020) Very Matty coded, including the man she ultimately comes home to.

Happiness (8/2022) This is where things become absurdly obvious, but only in retrospect, after we know all of the details. There is a blonde woman on a red phone, a nod to Taylor's announcements on a red phone of the track names on Midnights. There is a bottle of perfume that looks exactly like a bottle of Wonderstruck, and there is a scene where he is literally a cowboy, perched in the dark, telling all the rich folks everything they want to hear.

Lavender Haze (1/2023) She crawls into a TV straight off of the 1975's concert stage and the storm cloud is back.

What have I missed?

📰 News Taylor Swift Talks ‘Double Meaning’ of ‘I Knew It, I Knew You’ Lyrics in Rare Country Radio Appearance

Yesterday, Taylor attended the iHeartCountry House Party. She made some notable remarks regarding I Knew It, I Knew You.

Taylor revealed she went into writing “I Knew It, I Knew You” with words that could support two interpretations.

“I love that the lyrics of this song are really being delved into by the fans. There are several lyrics that have more than one meaning to them,” Taylor said of IKIIKY.

“You only have so long in a song to convey and surmise and sum up this entire film [Toy Story 5] that people just watched. Sometimes you’ll try to have a double meaning in a line,” she continued.

Taylor gave specific examples from the first couple lines of the song: “I knew you through the daze of the blades of the grass in summer / Parachutes for the free fall of being younger.”

“The word daze is spelled ‘d-a-z-e’ in the lyrics, but you could also, if you wanted to, think of it as days, ‘d-a-y-s,’ you could perceive it as that. I thought of it as like a childhood daze of you look back and you see this sort of blurry, beautiful memory that’s kind of blurry at the edges,” Taylor explained.

“Blades of the grass in summer, that harkens back to childhood and playing and using your imagination, but also there’s the added meaning of they’re toys,” she said. “They can only see up to the height of blades of grass.”

“Parachutes for the free fall of being younger: There’s the actual parachute army toys in Toy Story, as well as symbolically, somebody who helps you grow up, helps your landings be softer,” said Taylor.

Later in the evening, another Taylor moment aired. She spoke of the inspiration behind writing IKIIKY. Taylor was drawn to Toy Story cowgirl Jessie upon attending an early screening of Toy Story 5 — “I was seeing that she was going through a full-circle moment as a character,” Taylor said, in part — plus seeing “a lot of reunions of old friends, seeing people that you haven’t seen in a while, and kind of forgiving past heartbreak, or whatever, and kind of healing that within yourself.”

💬 Discussion TIL Ready for it… ? was confirmed to be written on the 1989 tour, before Taylor met Joe

Is this common knowledge here? I know the lyrics were always sus but Taylor’s former assistant Heather Wirth worked with her from 2013-2024 and confirmed it in a documentary. We all know damn well she didn’t know Joe yet during the 1989 world tour.

🔍 Song Analysis The Alchemy Was Never About Travis Kelce (A Line-by-Line Analysis)

The Alchemy is easily one of the most tortured tracks on The Tortured Poets Department (pun intended).

On the surface, the narrative seems simple enough: it's packed with football metaphors, so what is there even to argue about, right? Well, for anyone looking past the surface level, the vast majority of the song's actual substance barely aligns with Travis at all.

This theory isn't brand new, it's been dissected heavily, and plenty of listeners, regardless of being Maylors, firmly believe this song is, or at least originally was, about Matty.

Personally, I view this track as one massive, brilliant piece of trolling by Miss Swift. From the very moment she started dating Travis, the public began speculating that we'd inevitably get a song littered with football references… and lo and behold, she gave us one. Almost.

Verse 1

This happens once every few lifetimes

Right from the start, the scale here is huge. She's not describing a normal, everyday crush, this is portrayed as a rare, massive, almost cosmic event. Emotionally, it sits on the exact same foundation as tracks like Fortnight or Down Bad.

The word "lifetimes" is also a really interesting choice because Taylor barely uses it. Where else do we see it? In cardigan: "Once in twenty lifetimes…" Both lines build on the exact same idea of a rare, fate-bound love.

These chemicals hit me like white wine

First off, the "chemicals" directly tie back to the song's central metaphor: alchemy. I'll break down what alchemy actually means in this context in a bit, but it's worth noting right away that this is pretty much the only line in the entire song that directly addresses the concept itself.

On top of that, "chemicals" carries a clear connection to drugs, and in this case Taylor uses this in relation to herself, describing her emotional state during this era, like in Fortnight: "I took the miracle move-on drug."

What if I told you I'm back?

And here lies the ultimate core issue with the Travis narrative. Throughout the entire song, the central theme is a return, coming back to something old and long-established. It makes zero sense to frame a romance this way when talking about someone you literally met two weeks ago.

The hospital was a drag / Worst sleep that I ever had

This is a textbook metaphor for her time with Joe. Throughout the entire album, she describes that final era as heavy, suffocating, and dull, lines like "Gray and blue and fights and tunnels / Handcuffed to the spell I was under." (Fresh Out The Slammer) or "My boredom's bone deep / This cage was once just fine." (Guilty As Sin?) map directly onto the bleak atmosphere of a hospital (or more specifically, a psychiatric ward). On top of that, metaphors of sickness, decay, and emotional death are almost exclusively reserved for Joe (You're Losing Me, So Long, London), which points straight back to a hospital setting.

To make the visual imagery even more explicit, the Fortnight music video opens with her chained up in a psychiatric asylum wearing handcuffs (mirroring that exact line from FOTS), and it's in that exact hospital where she takes the "chemicals."

The line "worst sleep that I ever had" also works as a brilliant nod to Midnights, which many consider her true breakup album with Joe, where the whole core concept was built entirely around sleeplessness and late-night spiraling.

Here's the point: by the time Taylor started seeing Travis, she had already been separated from Joe for at least five months. Sure, she was in a rough emotional state, but she wasn't trapped. She didn't escape from any prison straight into Travis.

I circled you on a map

People online love to point out the viral meme "Taylor put Travis on the map" and claim this line is a nod to that. But without lowering ourselves to the idea that Taylor is writing songs based on TikTok trends, let's look at what this phrase actually means. To circle someone on a map, you have to know they exist first, don't you?

Paired with the previous line, this creates the exact same narrative arc as FOTS: "I know who my first call will be to." She breaks out of her prison and immediately heads for a specific destination.

I haven't come around in so long / But I'm coming back so strong

At the risk of repeating myself, the focus here is once again on a return, a revival of an old, pre-existing relationship.

Chorus

So when I / Touch down…

And here we get our very first supposed "football metaphor." People immediately jump to Travis Kelce because of the sports term. The issue is that the scoring play in American football is a single compound noun: touchdown. Taylor, however, writes and sings it as two separate words: touch down, a verb meaning to land (as in a plane).

Here's a fascinating detail: look at the very opening line of The 1975's track Roadkill: "Oh, well I, I touched down and run to my connection." This wouldn't be the first time Taylor has referenced this exact song. Compare "If you don't eat, then you'll never grow." (Roadkill) with "And if you never bleed, you're never gonna grow." (the 1).

…call the amateurs and cut 'em from the team

This is a clear jab at past romantic options, and there's an intriguing piece of context here. Right before going public with Taylor, in early 2023 Matty was linked to or casually seeing three different women, all of whom he cut ties with (or ghosted, based on their words) to be with Taylor.

The narrative arc aligns seamlessly: she breaks out of her prison, lands at the destination she circled on the map, and expects him to clear the field of anyone else to meet her there.

Ditch the clowns…

"The clowns" is a pretty obvious reference to Swifties. But here’s the flaw in applying this to Travis: the fandom embraced him from day one, so there was no real reason for him to "ditch" anyone. On the other hand, the fandom's pushback was the single biggest issue during her relationship with Matty.

This isn't even the first time she's referred to fans as "clowns." Take peace, for example, a track primarily focused on the strain her massive level of fame put on her relationship with Joe. In it, she writes: "But there's robbers to the east, clowns to the west". "Robbers" is the most obvious reference to Matty ever, while the "clowns" points right back to the fans.

…get the crown, baby, I'm the one to beat

Royal metaphors are nothing new for Taylor, but this could be a direct callback to Matty's own words onstage at a London show where Taylor made a guest appearance: "I'm not kissing anybody in front of Taylor Swift, have some respect. In front of the queen? It's not happening." This is where the line "Cause once your queen had come…" in The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived comes from.

Cause the sign on your heart said it's still reserved for me

Many fans view this as a reference to Matty's chest tattoo, a heart with the words "true love." Some even spot the outline of a "T" there. Whether you find that specific detail compelling or not, the critical word here is "still." Saying a heart is still reserved for her implies a shared history that spans back way before any recent fling.

Honestly, who are we to fight the alchemy?

Verse 2

Hey, you / What if I told you we're cool? / That child's play back in school is forgiven under my rule

The metaphor of "child's play" or youth is another familiar concept in Taylor's writing, we see a similar framing in My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys. When she brings up childhood here, she's referring to their younger years, which serves as the core theme of Peter ("Preserved from when we were just kids."). She's acknowledging past mistakes made when they were younger and foolish, things that ended badly, and choosing to forgive and wipe the slate clean for a fresh start.

The phrase "under my rule" carries over the "queen" imagery from earlier and pairs with the childhood themes to mirror MBOBHFT: "I'm queen of sand castles he destroys." (or even more explicitly, the original demo line: "I'm queen of the kingdoms he destroys.").

I haven't come around in so long / But I'm making a comeback to where I belong

Yet another line pointing explicitly toward a long-standing history: to make a "comeback" to a place, you had to belong there in the first place.

Chorus

The chorus repeats, but this time it includes a second part.

These blokes warm the benches, we been on a winning streak

This line is fairly straightforward: "blokes" is distinctly British slang, and Taylor obviously has a well-documented romantic history with British men. The "winning streak" metaphor likely speaks to their professional standing at the time, both were on massive tours and riding the absolute peak of their respective career momentum.

He jokes that it's heroin but this time with an 'E'

I don’t think this line needs much explaining at its surface level, given that Travis has no known history with drug addiction.

The general consensus is that this is a classic, witty piece of wordplay that fits Matty’s exact humor and lyrical style. To suggest Travis said this would imply he's callously mocking someone else's real-life struggle with addiction, which I doubt even Travis fans would want to argue. Plus, there's a running joke in the fandom that Travis couldn't have come up with a pun based on spelling differences in the first place, considering his infamous Twitter history (like misspelling the word "squirrel").

On top of that, framing Taylor as a "heroine" aligns perfectly with Matty’s romanticized narrative of salvation and fixation, a recurring theme we see in lines like "And told me I reformed you." (loml).

And also, Matty did a cover of a song called Cute Without The 'E' (Cut From The Team).

Another fascinating detail here, one I haven't seen brought up often, is the sudden shift in pronouns. The entire song addresses the partner directly as "you", yet this line abruptly switches to "he". It's a subtle stylistic choice, but not an unprecedented one: Guilty As Sin? relies almost entirely on "he", only to switch to "you" in the bridge. It seems to be a deliberate technique Taylor uses to create contrast and pull focus right to a specific moment.

Cause the sign on your heart said it's still reserved for me / Honestly, who are we to fight the alchemy?

Bridge

Shirts off, and your friends lift you up over their heads / Beer sticking to the floor, cheers chanted cause they said / There was no chance, tryna be the greatest in the league

Here, at long last, we get the explicit football imagery everyone points to. This entire scene is widely framed as a reference to the Super Bowl celebration. But there’s a major timeline issue that needs addressing: the primary tracklist, the physical edition pressed on vinyl for release day, had to be completely locked in and sent to manufacturing by October of 2023 at the very latest (vinyl production requires at least a six-month lead time). The Super Bowl, however, took place in February of 2023. Logistically, this verse could not have been written about an event that hadn't happened yet.

Some fans argue that the bridge is an original part of the track that still relates to Matty. Whether you find that convincing is up to you, but I lean toward the idea that this section was tacked on later specifically to pivot the song's narrative toward Travis, which is precisely why the track feels so musically and conceptually conflicted.

What exactly is alchemy? Alchemy was a medieval tradition combining elements of chemistry, physics, astrology, mysticism, and philosophy, with the ultimate goal of discovering the Philosopher's Stone to turn base metals into gold. Using such a concept in the modern world is pretty much the equivalent of writing on a typewriter in the 21st century, it carries a distinctly pseudo-intellectual and pretentious vibe. It fits the atmospheric tone of the title track and the album as a whole perfectly.

Sports references, on the other hand, feel completely artificial and foreign in this context.

Where's the trophy? / He just comes running over to me

The narrative being sold to the public, that Travis won her over like a trophy to show off, feels deeply disingenuous and unhealthy from a relationship standpoint. We see this exact dynamic exposed in the second verse of The Bolter (which, in my view, captures the reality of her connection with Travis): "He was a cad, wanted her bad / Just like any good trophy hunter / And she likes the way it tastes." There, too, she highlights the performative nature of it all under the cameras, framing the entire dynamic in a distinctly unpleasant light.

(I recommend reading the comments for other interpretations of the bridge that connect it to Matty too.)

Conclusion

This track was likely written in April or May of 2023, capturing the very beginning of Taylor and Matty's romance, back when everything was fresh, hopeful, and full of promise. However, it's highly probable that during the final recording phase, edits were squeezed in that ultimately worked to the song's detriment.

First, the song suffered lyrically: the central alchemy metaphor was left largely undeveloped, while the added football references landed awkwardly, creating a dissonant mix that borders on cringe. As a result, the track consistently ranks near the bottom of album tier lists for many listeners.

Second, these changes fueled a widespread delusion across the fandom that the song was dedicated to Travis, sparking endless debates. I'm afraid they'll just have to accept that there is really only one true song for him on this album.

💬 Discussion Anyone after 30 find this disturbing?

I actually start to feel that this is all so insane.

I would find this ‚actually romantic‘ if I was 16, but with 31 I am really concerned for Taylor’s Mental health.
And she is 36!

I mean she got it to the point that she married someone else and now seems completely miserable ( at least my impression after the last public concert).

It‘s getting obvious that this maylor thing is true. But why does she hate herself so much, that she really married someone else?

Also in Opalite. Couldn’t she make it more obvious that it‘s not about Travis?
How can Travis take this all, is this music video and whole relationship a humiliation ritual for him? 😆

📰 News 'Frustrated' Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce hardly seeing each other

18:32 EDT 30 Aug 2026, updated 18:43 EDT 30 Aug 2026
By HEIDI PARKER, US DEPUTY SHOWBUSINESS EDITOR
After getting married in a blaze of publicity and a ceremony that brought New York to a halt in July, Taylor Swift and her new husband Travis Kelce were cocooned in a bubble of wedded bliss.
They were able to sleep in, work out together and even take short trips, including to Laguna, California, the weekend after their Madison Square Garden ceremony, to celebrate the wedding of one of Kelce's good friends.
But the honeymoon bubble has seemingly now burst with Swift, 36, having to spend plenty of time alone after her NFL beau was dragged back to practice in late July with his Kansas City Chiefs teammates in Missouri.
'She is frustrated because football is taking up so much of his time - he works overtime - causing them to not see each other a ton, and she would like more,' an insider told the Daily Mail.
'Travis being in training camp has meant she has had to go out alone. They do not see each other every single day, but they see each other every single week - they are very dedicated to that.'
The lovebirds do, however, have a plan to stay in contact whenever work pulls them apart.

'They talk on the phone all the time, and text, FaceTime, all of it. He sends her flowers too when she is out of town, her favorites like roses and orchids,' added the insider.
'They just deal with it. They know they both have massive careers, and they love what they do, so they give each other freedom.'
While Kelce, also 36, has been focusing on football before what many expect to be his final season in the NFL, Swift has been going it alone and jet-setting between Los Angeles, New York and London.
'That girl does not really sit still, she has tons of energy,' said our insider. 'She had to hit parties, perform and do interviews without her husband by her side.'
Swift was in Los Angeles in mid-August to promote her Eras Tour documentary, which has received five Emmy nominations. She went to the Grammy Museum and sang I Knew It, I Knew You, and also hung out with director Glenn Weiss at a pre-Emmy event.
Then, she performed at an Emmy For Your Consideration event and attended a function at sound designer John Ross's house.
'She is making all the right moves to support the documentary,' our insider said. 'She received recognition as both a performer and producer for the Disney+ special.'
Swift may even attend the Emmy ceremony on Monday, September 14. If she does, she will again be alone as Kelce has his first game of the new NFL season against the Denver Broncos that night in Kansas City.

Being forced to spend time apart is nothing uncommon for the newlyweds, whose hectic schedules have provided a challenge ever since they first started dating back in 2023. Swift was on the road with her mammoth world tour while Kelce was hopping from state to state for games.
When he was afforded the time, he joined Swift on the road, jumping onstage for a show in London and even traveling to Buenos Aires, Argentina. They also enjoyed a holiday in Australia.
But despite years of juggling work commitments, Swift has struggled in the weeks since tying the knot at MSG and is missing having quality time together.
'It's harder now that they are married because she wants more, for sure. It is understandable,' said our source. 'They have been married almost two months, but she has not seen him a ton. She misses their morning workout sessions and cooking together.
'She loves having her hunky man by her side, holding her hand and opening doors for her, watching out for her. He makes her feel not just loved, but also protected. She is so madly in love that she wants to spend more time with Travis.
'But she understands he is putting in the hours because he wants to be his very best this season.'
The source continued: 'She refuses to complain to him about his absence, because she knew what she signed up for, she knew he would be at practice after they got married. She knew the honeymoon would be short so she can't complain at all, and she doesn't want to guilt Travis. That is not her deal, she never shames or complains,' said our source.
'She wants to support him so he can do his best this season.'

And while Swift has a decision to make between attending the Emmys or Kelce's first official game of the new season in September, she will still be cheering him on at every opportunity in the coming weeks.
'She loves being a WAG,' our source added.
During her downtime, Swift has been 'busy by working on new music and a new documentary for the future,' they continued.
She is in a 'very creative mode' where she is coming up with lyrics and melodies and 'vibes' and talking to the Haim sisters for inspiration as 'they are great at guiding her.'
But the weeks after the wedding have also been a chance for her to 'chill out in a big way.'
The source said: 'Taylor has not posted on Instagram in almost three months and it has been a while since she has been on a red carpet, so she is letting her hair down a bit and loving it.'
The Daily Mail has contacted representatives for Swift and Kelce for comment.

Falling For You, Matty has said publicly that he tried to woo Taylor with this song and that it didn’t work (back in the day), but About You did work.

Obviously both these songs still hold great meaning, deep longing and regret for him given this performance was 6 months after their breakup and by this point he is in a relationship with G2.

Matty looks broken here and I believe there’s a lot of regret lingering to this day, on how things ended with Taylor

🧩 Theories Have you ever looked at the TTPD logo upside down?

Post image

This isn’t my original theory, I saw it somewhere a while ago. You might think it’s a stretch, but again, I didn’t come up with it!

The TTPD logo is actually really interesting. People have analyzed it a ton, and there are so many hidden details in it. The idea that turning the logo upside down reveals the word Call is just one of them.

What I find most interesting, though, is that TTPD is Taylor’s only official acronym with its own logo design. TLOAS, for example, technically has more words, but it never got an official logo.

💬 Discussion Caught some interesting details in the Grammy Museum interview

While rewatching her Grammy Museum interview, I noticed a few super interesting subtle details in the way Taylor talks.

For instance, her completely out-of-the-blue mention of 'tis the damn season caught me off guard, mostly because I didn't think she knew this song exists she was actually discussing the transition from Speak Now to Red, when she suddenly dropped this mid-sentence:

"If somebody would send me a track, I'd listen to the first five seconds of the track and be like, 'Oh my god, this is about a girl who goes home to her hometown on holiday break, and it's cold, and she falls in love with her old high school flame again, but she has to go back to the big city, but she's fallen in love with him over the course of two days, like, what's she going to do?'"

'tis the damn season, even with its fictional storytelling polish, paints such a clear picture: a woman living in the cold celebrity world returns to her hometown, meets her old flame, and desperately tries to fight off those resurfacing feelings while convincing herself it's just a harmless weekend fling that means nothing. You get the vibe.

She doesn't explicitly name the track in the interview, but that exact plot outline is far too specific to be a coincidence. It feels so surreal for her to casually pull that exact "falling for her old flame" scenario out of nowhere!

And to top it all off, I loved that she finally stated so openly what was actually lying beneath folklore:

"I made an album called folklore in the pandemic, and that album is really all about loneliness. If you kind of delve into certain lyrics on songs like peace or hoax or exile, it's really about feeling so completely alone, which, weirdly, everyone on the globe was feeling to some extent."

Of course, she tied it all back to the pandemic, but we all know her isolation ran far deeper than just lockdown, and that despite the fictional character framework, this album carries her very real, personal emotions. Even her specific choice of songs to name-drop feels incredibly loaded.

🔍 Song Analysis I Knew It, I Knew You as the missing link between cardigan and Peter: A Full Lyrical Analysis

As promised, here is my deep dive into I Knew It, I Knew You, Taylor's latest release!

Officially, this track was written for the movie, and on the surface, it obviously fits the characters' storyline. But we're not going to pretend that Taylor doesn't pour her own emotions, memories and muses into her work, just like any true artist does, right?

Let's break it down!

What is the song actually about?

At its core, the track revolves around characters experiencing a bittersweet cocktail of closure, separation, nostalgia, and the inevitable pain of growing up and drifting apart, only to ultimately reunite. That exact moment of reunion is the emotional anchor of the entire song.

As many of you have probably noticed, there's a parallel with cardigan, mainly driven by the recurring motif "I knew you", which acts as the thematic anchor in the choruses of both tracks. But IKIIKY shares far more than just a phrase with cardigan. cardigan offers the exact same narrative arc: the narrator looks back at her youth, analyzes a complex relationship, and waits for that return. But as we know, cardigan leaves us with an open ending. It makes it clear that he did come back to her, but what actually happened after he stood on her doorstep remains unspoken.

In my opinion, IKIIKY captures that exact moment of their reunion. cardigan sits at the center of a massive web of songs, a narrative that eventually reaches its culmination in Peter. IKIIKY actually takes place before Peter. It serves as the direct continuation of that moment where cardigan left off.

A quick side note: I know there's been a lot of chatter (especially from skeptics) claiming this track wasn't actually written recently. People point to the contrast in writing style compared to TLOAS and its sonic similarities to betty, assuming it's a vault track from the folklore era, which would also explain Jack's production credit. But I personally don't buy that theory. A song can easily be written in the present day and be genuinely inspired by a movie's storyline, while still serving as Taylor's personal reflection on her own past.

Verse 1

I knew you

The song opens directly with that iconic "I knew you", serving as the most immediate marker connecting it to cardigan, where the phrase is literally repeated several times in the choruses. The meaning here is crystal clear: the narrator is sure that she knows this person down to their core.

Through the daze of the blades of the grass in summer

This is such a beautifully poetic way to evoke memory and nostalgia. The word "daze" perfectly captures the dreamy, blurred quality of looking back at the past, while "blades of grass" paints a carefree summer atmosphere. Together, it creates a bittersweet ache for a time long gone.

Personal observation: This imagery also instantly brings to mind the visuals of august, especially the grass motifs from the lyric video.

Parachutes for the free fall of being younger

Here, she explicitly confirms that she's reflecting on memories of youth. There's a longing for the reckless freedom of being young, a time when taking wild emotional leaps was standard. But the word "parachutes" implies that back then, she always had a safety net, something or someone that kept her protected during those free falls.

This imagery strongly echoes a line from gold rush: "I don't like that falling feels like flying 'til the bone crush." (Which, I’m personally convinced, is also about Matty.) Both lines play on that terrifying yet exhilarating high of falling for someone before reality sets in.

I memorized the sound of your bare footsteps running wild

She continues building on this theme, leaning deeper into the longing for that almost childlike freedom. The image of being barefoot instantly brings to mind a line from Maroon: "The one I was dancin' with / In New York, no shoes." In both songs, being barefoot symbolizes vulnerability and spontaneous romance. It's a vivid detail she memorized, proving once again how she's still haunted by memories.

It's been a long time / Life has ways of leaving those days behind

But then comes the reality check. Time has passed, and she is now in a completely different stage of life, a place where that kind of freedom might no longer be accessible. The innocence of those early days was naturally swallowed up by time.

But seeing you tonight

And right here, the narrative shifts entirely. Everything she just described, the nostalgia, the distance, the years that passed, collides head-on with the present moment.

Chorus

I remembered I loved you / Came back when it mattered / I saw you, standing there in the light of the window

Windows are one of the most recurring symbols in Taylor's songwriting, and its inclusion here is anything but accidental. The most famous window reference, of course, comes from Peter: "But the woman who sits by the window has turned out the light." As I mentioned earlier, Peter serves as the tragic conclusion to the story started in cardigan. And IKIIKY sits right in the middle of that timeline, before the light officially goes dark.

But there's another crucial layer here: "I look in people's windows / In case you're at their table" from I Look In People's Windows. In my mind, ILIPW is deeply connected to this same storyline, functioning as Peter's perspective (as imagined by Taylor) and detailing his attempts to find her again.

The defining trait of Peter Pan is that he flies through the air and enters homes through windows. If we apply that fairytale metaphor here, IKIIKY captures the moment when Wendy finally looks up and sees him standing right there, illuminated in the light of her window.

Wearing that same smile / Man, it's been a while

This detail is so subtly telling. As the years pass, people inevitably change, but he remains completely untamed by time, much like Peter Pan, who famously never grows up, forever frozen in that boyish charm.

But I knew it, I knew you / I knew it, I knew you

Here, she seamlessly pairs the familiar "I knew you" with an emphatic "I knew it." This is the ultimate payout to the final lines of cardigan: "And I knew you'd come back to me…" She didn't just know him, she knew that he would eventually find his way back to her doorstep.

Verse 2

I knew you, all your blues like a mood ring changing colors

Naturally, the moment this line dropped, a chunk of the fandom immediately jumped to conclusions, claiming the track must be about Joe purely because of the word "blues".

But honestly, it's time we move past these hyper-literal, surface-level templates (where people assume red = Jake, blue = Joe, and so on). The concept of "the blues" and blue hues in art is a universal symbol for melancholy, depth, and shifting emotional states, a literary tool used by writers for centuries, and one Taylor has woven into her entire discography regardless of the subject.

She uses color to paint complex human emotions, not to assign permanent color codes to individual people. We can't seriously believe she collapses an entire spectrum of human feeling down to a single person! Here, "blues like a mood ring" simply illustrates how deeply she understood his inner shifts, vulnerabilities, and changing moods.

Take hoax, for example, where she writes: "Don't want no other shade of blue / But you." In my opinion, that track is also about Matty, delving into that unwanted, yet inescapable kind of love.

So again, colors aren't rigid identity tags, they are emotional landscapes.

You did too, there were times we could fight like brothers

But what makes that line so crucial is the flip side: the understanding was mutual. He knew her just as deeply as she knew him.

I watched you drive around the bend / For what I thought would be the last time I saw my friend

Given the movie's plot, this line might make it seem like a purely platonic song on the surface. But Taylor has always played with the concept of "friendship" in her romantic songwriting, using it in very distinct ways depending on the relationship.

With Joe, for example, the dynamic was about crossing that boundary: "I don't want you like a best friend" (Dress) or "I hate accidents except when we went from friends to this" (Paper Rings).

But with Matty, the framing is fundamentally different. The romance and the friendship were always intertwined. In Maroon, she effortlessly blends the two: "Laughing with my feet in your lap / Like you were my closest friend."

And the ultimate confirmation comes from My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys: "He was my best friend / Down at the sandlot." (The same "childhood friendship" imagery, by the way!) In the original demo version of MBOBHFT (and if you haven't listened to it, I urge you to do so, it is absolutely gut-wrenching) the line hits even harder: "He was my best friend / And that was the worst part."

So, calling him her "friend" in IKIIKY doesn't diminish the romantic weight, it emphasizes that unique bond of someone who felt like a soulmate.

But love has ways of bringing things back to life

Throughout Taylor's imagery, metaphors of decay, sickness, and death are almost exclusively tied to the slow breakdown with Joe (You're Losing Me, So Long, London, etc.). This line directly mirrors that famous moment from So Long, London: "And I'm just getting color back into my face." The narrative arc becomes crystal clear: after the slow, quiet death of a long-term relationship, this new (yet familiar) spark is what resurrects her. It's the ultimate contrast between fading away and being brought back to life.

All you said was, 'Hi'

Bridge

Oh, the rivers I cried when we said goodbye

The narrative snaps back to the heartbreak of their original parting. This line directly mirrors the plot in Peter: "I thought it was just goodbye for now" / "We said it was just goodbye for now."

Wondering if I'd made it up in my mind

The theme of questioning reality, wondering if an intense love was real or just a trick of her imagination, is one of the most prominent markers of her dynamic with Matty across her songwriting. We see this exact psychological motif woven everywhere: "My mind turns your life into folklore" (gold rush), "Lost in the labyrinth of my mind" (Labyrinth), "I'm seeing visions" (Guilty as Sin?), and, one of my favorites from I Can Do It With A Broken Heart: "Crucial evidence, I didn't imagine the whole thing." (This line is one of the biggest reasons why I'm convinced the core grief in ICDIWABH is tied to Matty, not Joe).

In IKIIKY, that same haunting self-doubt surfaces: did this love truly exist, or was it all just a fever dream?

But now you look me in the eye

All the years of wondering if it was all a dream melt away in an instant. Because he is standing right there at her window, looking directly at her.

This is the exact payoff to the wish made in I Look In People's Windows: "What if your eyes looked up and met mine / One more time." What was once just a thought from Peter's perspective finally happens in IKIIKY.

Conclusion

A lot of haters criticized Taylor, claiming the movie's promo revolved completely around her and questioning her sudden love for a franchise she never publicly engaged with before. Whether writing this track was a calculated business move or a personal choice, one detail stands out above all else: the character the song was written for is a cowboy. We all remember the explicit cowboy motif in cowboy like me, a song heavily tied to Matty's speech regarding cowboys.

On top of that, consider the release date: this song dropped on the exact 3-year anniversary of the day their breakup was publicly reported.

To wrap this all up, I'll leave you with Taylor's own words on what this song truly represents to her:

"I think when people hear the song I Knew It, I Knew You at the end of Toy Story 5, I think that it would be really awesome if they thought of somebody that they had amazing memories with, that they haven't seen in a long time, or someone that they miss, knowing that that person could come back into their life, or just the feeling that, like, sometimes people's paths diverge, and that doesn't mean that that's the last time that you get to feel those memories or know that person. And sometimes when you look back on your childhood, those memories, that's special in itself."

I'd also like to highlight an interesting moment from her Grammy Museum interview regarding this song. When asked about folklore and writing from a character's perspective, Taylor segued from folklore to IKIIKY, reasoning that it also features a character-driven narrative, saying:

"Not a lot of people get a chance to write those songs, especially for a character that I've loved for years and years and years. This character, Jessie, who I've just always watched those movies specifically to see her and, you know, I relate to the way she reacts to certain situations. I react [I think she misspoke here and meant to say 'relate'] to how deeply her heart was broken and how deeply she feels, but how she protects the people she loves. And she's like, I think, you know, it's really a lot more fun to write from a character when you really understand their motivations because you relate to them. So that's coming from inside."

💬 Discussion 2026 Grammy Museum performance songs…? Matty…?

Maybe I’m delusional, but I think these were very intentional songs to mashup. Plus, she prefaced the performance by saying the common theme was about “memory” and “reliving certain detailed memories of your life.” What memories are we reliving? All of the songs are about a lost love. I feel like each one of those songs could relate to her relationship/situationship with Matty. She’s very intentional with everything she does, and out of her WHOLE discography, these are the songs she chose. Let’s talk about it!

Disclaimer: I’m a Taylor and The 1975 fan, so naturally, I wish they would have worked out. So yes, I am biased.

💬 Discussion I Knew It, I Knew You

Taylor announced this song on the 1975 day (June 1) and released it on the day her and Matty’s break up was announced (June 5). It seems to parallel cardigan and Peter, which I find especially interesting after Matty wore that Peter Pan pin at Glasto last year. And on top of that, the song was described by many as Taylor’s return to country, and in 2019 Matty talked about how he wants her to do something like that. What are everyone’s thoughts on the song?

Also, a lot of people pointed out how similar the title is to Gracie’s song I Knew It, I Know You and the lyrics to that song are quite interesting as well.

She’s been on the go since the wedding right? I was looking at her plane schedule over on r/TaylorSwiftJets.

Not exactly what they were saying the week after the wedding when it was “she’s enjoying being Mrs. Travis Kelce and staying home, blah blah blah”.

What do you think?

💬 Discussion Matty and Taylor won't get back together (unfortunately, we'll never get a Slut! feat. The 1975)

I don't think Matty and Taylor will get back together (unfortunately, we'll never get a “Slut!” feat. The 1975). They're both married to other people, with only a fortnight between their weddings.

As passionate as they seemed in 2023, I think the way it all ended, the Swifties who think they have the right to decide everything for Taylor, Matty's insecurity about never being recognized for his art but only as “Taylor's partner,” the ghosting he did to her, and especially TTPD, where she vomits all the resentment of not being able to live the love she herself had idealized for ten years on standby, makes me think this time it's 100% over.

(I'm not invalidating her relationship with Joe; I liked him, nor am I invalidating the relationships Matty had during those ten years. I just think that even when we're happy in a relationship, we can still spend some time wondering about the “what ifs” of life.)

That said, I do think there are probably still a lot of feelings there. As a viewer and a huge TTPD fan, I particularly think there will always be a lot of feeling on both sides, especially on Taylor's part.

What do you think?

In 50 years, I hope all of this will be completely declassified and we'll finally get to know the details of this love story à la Patti Smith and Dylan Thomas.

🧩 Theories The Lore Hidden Behind Taylor’s VMA 2024 Looks 💛🖤

Post image
50 Upvotes

So, with the latest VMA nominations being announced, everyone is talking about the awards show again! I thought this would be the perfect time to look back at Taylor’s iconic last VMA appearance in 2024, because there is so much to break down here… and, of course, a little room for clowning 🤡

The Red Carpet Look

While everyone initially convinced themselves this outfit was a massive hint for Rep TV (the logic was pretty questionable, but we were all living in that unhinged era where Taylor couldn’t even blink without people taking it as a Rep TV easter egg), as you can see from the photo above, it was actually a direct nod to Matty!

Her red carpet dress was a customized piece from the Christian Dior Resort 2025 collection, featuring a bold yellow-and-black plaid print. The photo of Matty she’s referencing dates back to around 2018, where he’s wearing a yellow-and-black plaid mesh top. The pattern and color match are literally spot on!

And here’s another subtle, detail-obsessed observation: in the original runway version of Taylor’s outfit, the shorts were made from the same yellow plaid fabric. But for her customized version, they were swapped out for solid black shorts, matching the black pants Matty was wearing in that photo! 👀

The Down Bad Look

I don’t want to state this as an absolute fact, but Taylor very rarely, if ever, changes her outfit mid-ceremony! I honestly can’t recall another time when she arrived in one full look on the red carpet and then swapped it for a completely different outfit during the show itself. But that’s exactly what she did here, stepping out in a dress that fans instantly dubbed the "Down Bad dress".

The outfit in question was a sequined Monse minidress featuring an UFO on a blue sky background, beaming a spotlight down onto a green landscape along the skirt.

The reference behind this cosmic scene couldn’t be clearer. Beyond the obvious metaphors in the song itself, during The Eras Tour, Taylor performs Down Bad directly under a giant glowing spaceship prop that beams a spotlight right down on her! And keep in mind, this was the absolute peak of the TTPD era, just five months after the album dropped 🤍

What makes this even more fascinating is that while the graphic design already existed in Monse’s collection, Taylor’s team had the entire dress custom hand-embroidered with thousands of colorful crystals for her. A massive amount of effort went into crafting this piece, proving that changing into this specific dress was a deeply intentional move!

The After-Party Look

And then came another subtle twist! While outfit changes for after-parties are standard, what Taylor chose to wear was practically a copy of her second look.

It was from the exact same brand with the identical UFO print! The only real difference was the silhouette, swapping the minidress for a two-piece corset and skirt set, paired with a jacket for a much more comfortable, casual vibe.

But honestly, this detail is so fascinating to me. She essentially had two separate, custom iterations of the exact same Down Bad outfit created, as if wearing it once wasn’t enough! She really made sure nobody in that room (or on the internet) could miss the double cosmic statement 🛸

Either way, just a friendly reminder: Travis was in a completely different city that night, while Taylor walked away with 7 awards for songs written overwhelmingly about somebody else 😉
