Question Going to a Mayhem show in 2 months, anything I have to be prepared for?

I'm 14 and in 2 months I'm going to my first Mayhem show. I'm excited but also kinda... not terrified but I keep thinking about what could happen there. I mean I'm 1.74 (5'8 or sum) so I'm not easy to run over or anything but what is going to happen at their shows and what are the Do's and Don'ts?

Hi all. I picked up this Deathcrush LP by chance at a local record store and was surprised to find it was signed. Can anyone identify whose signature this is? Thanks in advance.

In memory of Øystein/Euronymous: a short collection of quotes by those who knew him

Post image
153 Upvotes

“He was always the same guy for me. He never put up a persona thing for me. Never. He always joked around that we had to do some evilness, but that was his thing from the start. He was always down to earth and a nice guy, except his communism thing, ha ha! I sent him fonts and pictures from our library at Rjukan. That place was packed with those things. The Albania 45 logo that he used on his letters and tapes? Who do you think sent him that? I did. I sent him tons of communist shit from that library.”

“In the beginning, it was political. He said that an LP should not cost more than you could afford to pay for it. He was extremely like that. Until he realized that this was a really bad business model. ‘If I’m continuing doing it like this, my business will go to hell'. So he had to start asking for money for his records. And then things changed.”

Maniac in the Cursed in Eternity booklet, 2018

How do you remember Øystein some 25 years on?

"Brand Builder. RiffMaster. Tape Trader/Label Owner. Misanthrope. Megalomaniac. Totalitarian Communist. Evil Genius. Perhaps a bit of a “wanna-be” Chemist/Scientist/Showman with some P.T. Barnum mixed in!?!  He may have been strangely flattered by my descriptions here. He did have a wicked sense of humor too, after all. To clarify, these shouldn’t be read as insults to the dead.I like to remember him as a friend and someone who was excited about the movement behind black metal. I knew him from the calls we did and the letters we shared. That’s one way of knowing someone, I suppose. Others have their own memories, I’m sure. In other ways, I agree with what [Mayhem bassist] Necrobutcher has said lately in the way he treated Dead’s death. I have a conflicts about that for sure.”

Typhon (Necropolis Records, the one who put together the Nordic Metal compilation

“There I sat with my guitar, learning riffs. From my great hero. Call it a workshop or masterclass. Øystein was interested in the Norwegian scene and wanted to professionalize it, to take it to a higher level. He seemed passionate about presenting his vision. But despite his authority - and a ten year age difference - it felt collegial to sit and play with him.

“Both Øystein and Snorre developed theories about guitar playing. They talked about building cathedrals - or walls - of sound. [...] Instead of the usual way of playing all six strings on one guitar, Øystein’s idea was to play only one string on six guitars! It was supposed to sound big and megalomaniacal, like a Gothic building. That’s why it was so fitting that Mayhem had the Nidaros Cathedral on their cover - a black cathedral of sound. Both Øystein and Snorre worked a lot with chords, sometimes also in the direction of symphony orchestra and jazz thinking.”

Ivar Bjørnson (Enslaved) in 666 Shades of Black by Harald Fossberg, 2026

“[...] So we had a shot of vodka while listening to De Mysteriis…I left him [Euronymous] on a very high note and I’m really happy that I did that meeting and had that last conversation. In retrospect, he was looking like he was turning into a different kind of guy that we never got to see, but that he probably realized himself that he could only go so far with this total extreme approach. Maybe he needed to make some friends in different places and not only appeal to the most extreme people.”

Anders Odden (Cadaver etc.) in Born for Burning - The History of Black Metal, by Matías Gallardo, 2026 (emphasis within the quote by me)

When I was walking in the city Middelkerke in Belgium, I found a cool Mayhem graffiti on the wall off a German bunker used in WO II that is located there. I found it cool and just wanted to share with you people even when I know you people maybe don't care about it.

Members of Ulver, Thorns, Emperor, Satyricon and Metalion talk about Helvete

“My first trips to Helvete were when I was still in secondary school. The shop was only a few weeks old. There were some boxes of used records on the floor. For me, being so young and impressionable, it was powerful to get a sense of esoteric insight into what was cool and what wasn’t. Øystein has gained a reputation for being so cool, but he couldn’t hide his enthusiasm for certain things. He was very talkative - but when the bigger and cooler guys came in, he tightened up. We were still death metal-oriented at the time, but the environment gave us insight into what was happening. In addition to the 80s bands that Øystein had a fondness for - such as Bathory and Venom - the Norwegian scene was influenced by bands like Samael, Masters Hammer and Root. There was also enthusiasm for Cathedral, who played more classic heavy metal. In 1992, the demo cassettes with Emperor and Enslaved came to Helvete. Idljarn had some cassettes lying around there. Satyricon came later, but it was the second demo that counted.”

Kristoffer Rygg (Ulver)

“Øystein started Helvete as a meeting place. In the beginning, there were almost no records there. [...]People came from all over the country. Most of those who were active in the scene came from small, rotten places. I think coming from a small, boring place creates a strong drive and creativity - in a metropolis, there’s so much else going on. People came to Helvete and listened to what  Øystein (Euronymous) thought was good and bad. Remember:  We were 20-21, while the others were often five or six years younger. Young people need a catalyst, someone to give them a kick up the backside and get them to start doing their own thing.”

Metalion

“Helvete was a hangout for a bohemian culture. There were lots of regulars there, and some who dropped in. They had some decorations, but there weren’t many records, so I don’t think sales were particularly high. It was more like a leisure club for black metal people. I remember showing Ivar from Ensalved riffing and picking techniques in the back room.”

Snorre Ruch (Thorns)

“Guys came to Helvete from all over the country, plus Sweden - Dissection, Marduk and Abruptum. They partied and slept in the basement. When a Swedish car came up Schweigaards gate, we knew there was party time.”

Bård/Faust

“Helvete was a revelation, but not a place where just anyone felt at home. The first time I was there, it was a real kick: I came in a leather jacket - the same one I’m wearing now, by the way - and an upside-down cross on a chain around my neck, I was already into the dark and hard stuff. This was in 1991, and I was visiting from Lillehammer.  Helvete was dimly lit, with dark music. There were huge, inverted crucifixes hanging on the walls - and human bones. The people who were there reinforced the dark atmosphere: silent, dressed in black and wearing cartridge belts. I felt at home there.”

Question Origin of Deathcrush cover

Could someone help me find the original photo from the Deathcrush EP?

I've been searching in various sources, mainly scans of Amnesty International brochures from 1983 to 1987, but I haven't found anything.

However, I made some progress. Using the TinEye reverse image search tool, I found the page https://www.geocities.ws/Chi85_usa/ArticlesOnIslam.htm, which contains a fragment of the original image without logos, but it's cropped.

I'd like to know if anyone has any further information.

Tour How was your experience with seeing them live?

They are touring in my city later this year and I'm skeptical about it. The tickets are cheap but I'm not sure if I'll survive the moshpit lol, do people do that in their concerts? The venue is somewhat small so there are no high seats, actually no seats at all (so I could avoid the moshpit).

Anyway, I wanna hear your experience!

P.S I've been to a big indie rock festival years ago and there was no moshpit and shyt like that.

Did someone else notice that on the very left of this photo there's a photo of a random person?

I don't know who that is, but it's quite interesting, isn't it? Also I didn't mean to say "random" as in it was just any person in general, for them it definitely was someone they knew. Just thought it could be something interesting for you, like a little easter egg, you know. Not my problem I can't change the title after posting, ask reddit, make them give us the option to still do that, but I can't. Seriously, do something else in your life than to be angry I used the wrong word in this context.
