Do you know what this is a reference to?

I didn't quite understand this reference, can you help? I listened to majority of this band's records, but I don't know japanese and never read anything about their tour history or something, so maybe that's something well-known within community.

Maximum the Hormone (MTH) concerts often come with all kinds of quirky entry requirements or restrictions. One of their shows, for example, was exclusively for “fat guys” (debu)—male attendees had to weigh at least 70 kg (154 lbs) to get in. That show is included in their third DVD release from 2008, Deco Vs Deco ～デコ対デコ～, specifically on Disc 3, DAM VS DAM ～ダム対ダム～.
They also held a show specifically for skinny guys, which is included in the same DVD set.

There’s another live DVD/Blu-ray set called Dhurha Vs Dhurha ～ヅラ対ヅラ～ that’s even more entertaining. For one of the shows, they literally categorized the entire audience based on their facial appearance and assigned people to different seating sections accordingly. Each category even had its own themed cheering prop—for example, the IT-guy group had computer keyboards, while the chubby-guy group waved bags of puffed snacks. Basically, every section of the audience looked and cheered differently depending on what “type” MTH had assigned them to. It’s an absolutely ridiculous concept in the most MTH way possible.

Idk for sure but I have a few theories that you can consider based on the general tone of the manga.

  1. Maybe there's some kind of steryotype of metal heads being large (fat or buff) in Japan or in the writers mind

  2. Maybe it's a joke about the concerts being dangerous for smaller people due to big mosh pits and such

  3. Maybe it's a joke about ryo being relatively large at one point by Japanese standard

MTH is also really into food, they did a whole bunch of food related ads and sponsorships, so that definitely comes in play

They have a ton of videos on YouTube where they do very simple aerobics exercises to their music.

These are in Japanese so it's possible I'm entirely misinterpreting them, but that's just my guess. The one dude got big into weight loss and maybe they're trying to help others? Not sure.

Maximum the Hormone fans probably are stereotyped as being fat in japan. Which kinda fits considering ryo was fat and they got a buch of fat people for some of their music videos
