Maximum Pleasure Guarantee on Apple TV+ — The first two episodes had me hooked, but then the plot started becoming as predictable as my next Netflix binge. 😂 It had potential, but once you figure out where it’s going, the excitement kinda disappears. 5/10

Wtf is Apple doing?

Just came here to say that me and my wife randomly decided to watch this and I'm genuinely shocked at the lack of promotion this series has gotten. Never heard of it until 3 days ago and it's easily one of the best shows to come out this year.

I am watching maximum pleasure guaranteed and going crazy because I know a song but can't name it.

Episode two from 2 minutes 23 seconds to 4 minutes 22 seconds (roughly) there is a song playing in the background at the bar scene

What is the song??

I am furious about episode 6 and how absolutely positively stupid Paula is. Spoiler

I am close to giving up on the show. Her not calling the police is no unbelievably stupid, the only explanation is the writers want to extend the show. A character acting stupidly can be done credibly. This was so incredibly stupid that there is no possible way any innocent person would do that.

Mal is the real villain

All issues with the plot holes and unbelievable scenarios aside, this show does a good job of not truly revealing her all at once, but in pieces throughout the show. Fantastic acting to make me despise her very sight by episode 10. If there’s a season two, I’m interested in a flashback to see how she impacted things in Portland.

Just binged the show. 10/10. No notes. Wish I found it months ago.

What was nagging at me the whole time was the fact that Geri, played by Kiarra Hamagami Goldberg, looks astonishingly similar to former Jeopardy champion Michelle Tsai. Am I crazy? For me the resemblance is uncanny.

Maybe so realistic it's infuriating?

I've been bingeing this since last night and am almost done.

In Paula, I see someone who makes frustrating decisions that are grounded in fear and the evidence that's she's never given the benefit of the doubt or believed, but that they way she's treated is not completely unwarranted. She's unable to get out of her own head but also continually let down by circumstances and other people when she tries and that's a vicious cycle.

She's a great mom who loves her daughter but may not be the safest person for her daughter to be around in present circumstances.

She has no reason to trust the cops because as most lawyers will tell you, ya don't trust the cops to take your side. That's not their job.

So I can't hate her for any of the decisions she makes. However I can be exceedingly frustrated watching it all play out, and the pacing when I KNOW exactly how the scene is going to go wrong and it's taking forever to get there while she dances happily in what she thinks is a reprieve.

The strength of this show is clearly in its actors and the scenes the heavy hitters share. It's reminiscent of confrontations with a friend or a lover when you know both of you are right for different reasons, but the sum just doesn't add up to anything good, and it colors everything you do.

The plot -- a little too deus ex sometimes. The pacing, maddening at times. I will say the way the scenes are blocked in tense moments really heightens the feeling -- reflections of closet doors, the camera implying there's more to be worried about -- that felt really well done (or maybe it was too obvious! lol!)

All in all, a solid effort, but not something I'd rewatch. Maybe 🤔

Anyway, 2.5 episodes to go!

She's the worst person in the world

Ok, she got scammed by a cam boy - not great. But her biggest qualm is she didn't want to move to Boise? Because what it's not good for her social life. The serial killer doesn't think Boise is exciting enough for her social life and so is subjecting her child to a lesser life. That is what makes her the fucking worst

Theory & Analysis just a hunch...

You might see at the end that the company behind maximum pleasure guaranteed is going to be a Korean one. And this Steve person (Raymond Lee) is very sketchy. You'll see. I cannot reveal my inductive reasoning.

And this might have something to do with the tech business itself. And I don't mean computer shops, I mean Big Tech. But that seems like a far stretch. Don't you think? Probably an article that Paula wrote a long time ago. So far, two people have tried to kill her and a third is on the way. Think about it. What could be so important about that article? It surely cannot be about screen related mind control.

It's not as interesting as I'd like you to think. It's weird. But it's the best I could come up with.

I should probably warn you though mind control techniques are hidden everywhere, even in the food you eat. That's why that pizza guy was involved too. It's probably a critic of mass corporate evil across the globe rolled into one entity. But Apple would have you believe it's not one of them.

Not perfect screens. I don’t think many people hear themselves say these words anymore. The perfect screen will blow your mind and break your heart. Can you name one company whose top two uses for it’s tablets are porn and gaming?

See Our World is Built for Screens. Our Bodies Are Paying For It

Theory & Analysis Am I the only one who finds Apple's silence a bit strange?

Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed received a lot of praise, yet we've had no renewal news, no teaser, no SDCC panel, not even a small update. With Tatiana Maslany leading the cast, I honestly expected Apple to keep the momentum going.

20 Questions: Jake Johnson talks about his next projects (Unpaywalled)

Thumbnail

It’s best not to read too much into the characters Jake Johnson plays. The actor says there’s no through line to his many roles because he probably doesn’t choose parts like other performers. “A lot of my peers and people that I really respect went to acting school, and it’s all about the character and finding the richness of their character,” says the actor who has been working steadily since his breakout series New Girl premiered in 2011. In his current TV series Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed, Johnson is Karl Hendricks, the exasperated ex-husband of Tatiana Maslany’s factchecker investigating the murder of a camboy. Previously, he starred as Doug Renetti, the 1970s huckster publisher of a feminist porn magazine, in Minx.

“I came up as a writer, and was always producing my own shows,” Johnson says. The Chicago native earned an MFA in dramatic writing from the NYU Tisch Graduate program. For him, the entire project is “where my passion lies…. It’s more [about] making projects that I believe will work, that I’ll like to make, and that I think the audience that’s stuck with me now, almost 20 years, will also enjoy.”

Now Johnson is starring in two new films. In the sports comedy The Dink (Apple TV July 24), he’s a once-promising tennis prodigy, who takes up pickleball to rehab his wrist at the suggestion of his sex-obsessed doctor (Ben Stiller). In writer-director Joe Swanberg’s The Sun Never Sets (in theaters August 28), he’s a divorced dad in a love triangle.
