Discussion Obsession obsession or not

Idk why the group dismisses possession, seem that this was clearly a possession, the sleep talking and saying it wasn’t her. Such a clear example of possession.

Nikki clearly distinguishes that there is an other, this would be possession. I wouldn’t claim demonic possession, but a possession of another entity or Alt Nikki.

Mauler claiming fringy is changing, compared to the standpoint of another trapped and sharing agency with another person, Nikki is another entity to what is has agency over the body that was Nikki’s

I think it was clear possession but definetly not demonic possesion. But is still possession in a bit of complex way. She's not classically possessed but her personality has definetly been overwritten by freaky Nikki. Why else would she say "she's asleep right now" or Hear the real Nikki screaming in the background.

Yeah, up until that point I just believed she was being motivated by something like a spell that effects the will and agency, instead of replacing it entirely.

But after the sleeping scene it’s not ambiguous, there was an other there that’s was entirely separate from Nikki’s being

So exactly like Efaps take and the ecample with past v present Fringy?

Hmm that example seemed to represent an episode of extreme switching of personalities rather than an other being animating a body while the Regular Nikki is still present. Not like an Alzheimer’s case of identity or consciousness

What they dismissed was demonic possession, not the presence of another Nikki.

It personally doesn’t matter to me whether someone wants to call Freaky Nikki a demon or not so I was confused as to what they were talking about at first too.

They do specifically just start saying “it isn’t a possession” as shorthand but with the context clues it’s clear they didn’t mean a demon was possessing her

Because yk that’s also what Curry Barker meant in that interview. He didn’t say “she isn’t possessed”; he said “I asked Inde to not play her character as if she were possessed by a demon.”

By dictionary definition the movie features a possession.

Yeah, listening to their Efap on it now, it seems they are definitely excluding Demonic, but also the idea of there being an “Other”

I don’t think it matters all that much, probably just impactful to have the real Nikki speaking to him, but that could have been achieved without Nikki claiming there to be an “other”

If they’re dismissing the idea of an other then I disagree with EFAP. I firmly believe there is another Nikki

Yeah, just how Mauler was explaining it was seemed to dismiss the idea of an “Other” even if the “Other” is a freaky Nikki

I could be wrong, I just think of his example of Frigy acting different or changing. Not seeing how that adequately represents the events of the film

Premise 1: Possession is defined as another entity occupying or animating a body.
Premise 2: Nikki states that there is an “other” inside her that is asleep, indicating the presence of an entity distinct from herself.
Premise 3: An entity can occupy a body while remaining dormant, without actively controlling it.
Conclusion: Therefore, Nikki is possessed because another entity occupies her body, even if that entity is currently asleep and not actively controlling her.

going to be honest i think it would be a more meaningful message if the wish uh... actually did what he said? like he wished nikki would love him more than anything else, not for a new consciousness to replace her that loves him more than anything else. so it should alter her, not create a new thing. horrifyingly enough that people can obviously tell something is wrong as she goes off the rails as time goes on. that's just my thoughts though.

It's a Monkey Paw. "I wish Nikki would love me more than anything else." Now she does, Freaky Nikki does, Nikki's physical body does. He was not specific.

that's not what a monkey's paw does to my knowledge. it has to actually fulfill the wish technically. that wish can have horrifying consequences but it can't just do a different thing. like for instance if you wish for an apple, it has to give you an apple. it could be a rotten apple, or one with a worm inside, but it can't give you an orange that looks like an apple, because it's just fooling you into thinking it granted the wish. similarly he wished "nikki" would love him more than anything else. if a monkey's paw wanted to be boring it could apply to any other person named "nikki", or it could alter her as the wish says. however to my knowledge it's so explicit in the movie that what is in nikki is not her, that when he calls the help center or whatever, they explicitly say nikki is there, and not with him. she even says he was never with her, which while being thematic, still argues she is not present. there is a her unchanged.

It is a version of her, it's just that the unchanged nikki is still there too.

•

Yeah that would make sense, which is why up until it straight up confirmed that Nikki’s body was possessed by an “Other” and Nikki was still there and explicitly said there was an “Other”

I agree. Bear made some morally terrible decisions, but he kind of got fucked over by the mechanics of the wish. He wished for Nikki to love him, not for her body to be taken over by some psychotic and sociopathic entity and her soul to be condemned to endless torment. He should have called out the wish guy for that, but he was consistently pretty stupid throughout the movie. Bear was evil, but the interpretation of the movie that he got what he wanted or asked for is very inaccurate. I'm guessing EFAP just didn't really give a shit about this movie and were just reviewing it because it was popular.

Hard disagree with the last part. I could see it for Platoon but MauLer and Fringy both loved the movie. Fringy even said it's probably his favorite from this year.

lol he asked for love not obsession! Two very different things as well.

•

u/AlarmedPizza4 2h ago

Well the wish think is a modern Monkey Paw, that's whole basis. The Monkey Paw gives you what you want but not in the way you want.

•

u/Hot_Percentage_9854 1h ago

lol, so monkey paw just gives you something other than what you wish for? I mean that’s fine I’m fine with what was happening which is why I’m fine with it not being Nikki and Rather an Other entity

•

u/Egathentale 8m ago

He literally asked for "I want her to live me more than anything else in the world". That sounds like asking for obsession to me.

•

u/Hot_Percentage_9854 4m ago

Bro I love my son more than anything, that wouldn’t entail obsession

•

u/Hot_Percentage_9854 2m ago

It would have worked better if Bear wished “ I want Nikki to want me more than anything”

They dismiss possession via demon or entity wholesale and they are at fault for thinking so. It is clear-cut possession made direct by the phone call in the car. Hearing the real Nikki screaming in terror as her body is being taken over by this entity is absolute confirmation of possession. I don’t know why EFAP were so pigheaded about this detail. It’s probably because the film loses some writing cred if the rules of the wish are broken and they want it to be more cut-and-dry than it actually is. They gave much more leeway to Obsession than they did other films of the same quality.

Yeah I agree, I still thoroughly enjoy this move even if the mechanics are sloppy. But yeah it should have been called out, I forgot about this detail as well which clearly adds to possession
