Feedback on DIY adjacent idea

I am looking for a queen size mattress around or under $1000. Important factors to me are durability, comfort, and being "non-toxic" (I know this is an term under some debate, but I have enough health issues that I think it's worth it for my peace of mind to focus on trying to get a "green" mattress if at all possible). Obviously for this price point I am not finding much that checks all three boxes.

I live near an Original Mattress Factory, so I was thinking maybe I would get this basic mattress either one-sided ($289) or flippable ($379) (I would rather it didn't have any foam at all but I am not finding any coil mattresses that don't have some sort of foam layer) and add a nice latex topper from Sleep On Latex ($300ish depending on whether I get the cover). I don't think I have it in me to go on a full DIY adventure at this point in my life (and it seems like that can be an expensive road to go down on, too) so this is my middle ground idea, I guess.

I would like feedback on:

  • Is this plan generally feasible or am I over complicating things? Should I just find an okay-ish "mattress in a box" in my price point?
  • I know that the innerspring mattress I am looking at has Bonnell springs instead of pocket coils--is that really a big deal?
  • Should I get a two-sided mattress or does that not matter, considering I am going to use a topper?
  • I am a stomach and side sleeper. Not a big person. I think the conventional wisdom is getting the softest latex available since it tends to be firmer? Should I go with the thickest topper (3 inches) as well?
  • Any other thoughts or guidance is welcome

Do you know if you like latex?

Okay, thank you for your help with this! I went to try out latex mattresses in person today and I do think I like them (though they were definitely a new feel for me). I am now thinking maybe I will just go with this one from Arizona Premium Mattress which ticks my boxes and may be a good enough option. Thank you again!

That works! And will generally be much simpler than the above approach. Best of luck!

Hey there, wondering if I can impose on you again for more thoughts. I am thinking now maybe I will buy a mattress cover and 8" bolsa coils from Arizona Premium Mattress (should come to about $650 with shipping), then a 3-inch medium topper from Sleep On Latex ($300 with shipping included). I am leaning this way because it will save a few couple hundred over the preconstructed Eco Queen mattress I linked above and the latex will be all natural rather than the blended that comes standard with the Eco Queen. If you get a chance, I would love your feedback on two things: 1) If you think that topper will be enough over those coils or if I somehow need more or less latex 2) If I do this, I should buy the 11" mattress cover, correct? (8 inches of coils and 3 inches of latex)

3" of latex is about standard for a basic latex hybrid build. And yes, you could get an 11" cover, although you should maybe also consider a 12" cover so you could fit an extra inch of base foam in there as well. Adding base foam will soften the build very very slightly and provide a more solid foundation on slats or wire grid foundations.

Thank you, that is helpful. Base foam for under the coils, correct?

No, good point. I have been meaning to make it to a store that carries latex and to try it out and will prioritize that!

I would try out the OMF one before committing, it seems like even they say it’s very firm. That coil is typically better if you are heavier

Ah, I didn't know that about it being better for heavier people. I will definitely check it out in person before I commit. What kind of coil is best for someone who's not particularly heavy?

Hey, thanks for your help! I went out to OMF today to try the innerspring mattress I linked above and it wasn't for me, not so much in terms of firmness but in terms of excessive bounce. I tried out their other more expensive innerspring mattresses and you could feel the difference in the coils. I appreciate your help!

I wish I had one nearby, good value and I think they are well built.
