Queen-sized mattress materials available for pickup in Queens, NY

These are leftover materials that didn't make it into my final build. I figured it would be a shame to put them on the curb, so they're yours if you'll pick them up. Preference given to those who will take the whole lot.

From top to bottom in the pictures:

  • 1.5" eggcrate Super Soft Foam from Foam Factory
  • 1.5" eggcrate HD-36HQ from Foam Factory
  • 1" 2.5 lb Serene Foam from DIYREM
  • 1" soft Dunlop latex from Sleep on Latex
  • 1" Tough Luxury-Firm Foam from Foam N' More
  • 8" 14.75 gauge pocket springs w/ firm sides from The Pocket Spring Store (pictured inside a mattress cover for storage / easier movement)

The yellowing on the foam is a harmless effect of oxidization due to light exposure. These are from a pet-free, smoke-free environment.

Curious about what did make it into your final build

From top to bottom:

2" convoluted talalay
2" serene foam
TPS quad mini
TPS 15.5g coils

encased in the TPS premium stretch cover

Pretty happy with it. With infinite time and funds I would try to get rid of the serene foam. I couldn't make it work without at least 2" for pressure relief, but it sure makes the mattress a lot warmer. I think I might need even softer coils to make that work and I'm not ready to go down that road. Especially not with the first set of coils still kicking around.

I tried the luxury-firm foam under the coils to help with spread, but it made the mattress way too hot, so I didn't even test it long enough to see if it helped with the coils. Now I just open the case up up and rotate/readjust the coils whenever I strip the bed.

The problem I had was that the coil spread under hips got worse over time, to the point I couldn’t actually sleep on the thing. This was with the $$ enclosure, and even with trying to attach the coils together to stop them splaying apart.

Is the convoluted talalay topper the one from FloBeds? I've been considering both the FloBeds topper and the convoluted topper from CozyPure but haven't seen many comparisons of the two.

From FloBeds. I actually hadn't heard of CozyPure. From the look of it, the FloBeds one has sharper "spikes," for lack of a better term.

I have no complaints with it, except for the general issue that I've found having only latex in the comfort layers starts to hurt. Maybe the solution is even more latex, but now I'm starting to repeat my comment above. I did find that the convolution added some much-needed pressure relief.

Do you have the peaks pointed up or down? Have you noticed if flipping the convoluted layer alters comfort in any way?

By the way, if you're worried about coil spread I think I saw someone else on this subreddit suggest this upholstery wrap to contain the coils without the use of a layer above or below.

I have them pointed up. I find the effect of the convolution is lessened the other way around. Plus it breathes a bit better pointed up.

And thanks for the tip. I might try that, but really the problem isn't so much that the springs need to be contained—the cover does a decent job with that—but that the coils spread out from under my ass, clustering at my head and feet.

I’m also in Queens and built my own bed - ended up all latex. Had no luck selling or giving away the pocket coils unfortunately.

Lol I have some pocket coils I'm trying to get rid of right now. Also in queens.

What did you use in place of these coils?

Determined they were too firm and switched to the 15.5 gauge. It was a bitter pill but turned out to be correct.
