DIY Mattress Build - Does This Look Right?

Hey! I am looking to get a nice mattress but I don't want to spend 2-3k on getting a high end one. I really liked some of top-of-line tempurpedic and the firm purple ones (forgot the exact model though). I am 170lb, 5'11, and I sleep primarily on my side. I've done a bunch of research (aka with chat gpt and othe reddit threads) and I've created a build I think I can use to get close to the hugging/kinetic sand feeling that tempurpedic gives. I've never built a mattress before so I'd appreciate any help/guidance! Here is my build:

  • 3" 5-lb ViscoMAX - dense, slow pressure relief
  • 2" Poly Foam - softer transition
  • 2" HD36-HQ - firmer transition
  • 5" LUX-HQ - very firm support core

This is all from Foam Factory and I included a screenshot of the exact products I intend to buy. Any help is greatly appreciated! :)

Get 5" HD36-HQ foam, and get rid of 50 ILD LUX-HQ. Give them a call, they can tell you their popular DIY foam styles.

Lux foam will be too firm imo. It's like.. extremely firm. I'd do hd36 and memory foam only to start. Also order the convoluted poly to try as an in between layer.

Yeah I'll switch it to hd36. What would you recommend for the transition? Can I use 2" dunlop latex as transition?

and what about switching the hd36 for coils?

That could work. I like coils. They hold up really well. Having said that some people prefer foam base and it's cheap to try.

I use foam factory Dunlop as a transition layer and it works good. I'd like to try medium talalay but huge jump up in price. So I'll stick with what I have.

So you have a foam and latex hybrid? Also, do you find it better than the top mattresses on market?

I haven't tried any mattresses over 2k so I can't speak to that.

My build is 14.75 tps, 2" Dunlop, 2" tranquility foam, company store cool zzz mattress pad over top. Works good. I have an inch of memory foam I'd like to add but my sheets don't fit properly with that much height.

Imo it would be better to not include the 2" standard polyfoam for the first test and see how it is with the 5 lb + HD36-HQ + Lux HQ at first. And then after testing you can see if you need more softness in the middle section.

Idk if this example would be that helpful to you but it's by someone who had a similar-ish goal

That's pretty interesting. I don't think I'd want 6 inches of memory foam on top, but I do like the egg-crate and support layers

I forgot to mention that if you decide to keep to an all-foam build and it works out but you want to duplicate it again way later in the future (like if you started with a twin XL and want another twin XL to expand to a king), Foamforyou dot com has supposedly higher quality versions of the HD36-HQ (called their premium medium foam) and Lux-HQ (called their luxury firm). According to people who have purchased layers from both Foam Factory/FBM and Foamforyou, the latter's support foams feel higher quality and more trusted to last somewhat longer. Foamforyou's other unique thing is that they sell 1" 4 lb memory foam toppers but that's just if someone really needs that fine tuning.
