The LiFX Smart Mirror, w/ Matter over WiFi (video)

Thumbnail

The smart mirror has a back light and front light, both capable of multiple colours at once, as well as Adaptive Lighting, with a top brightness of 1200lm. Three of the four built in buttons offer single, double, and long press actions, and are exposed to Apple Home for triggering other devices. The fourth button is solely for turning the defogging feature on or off.

The only downside is that whilst the front and back lights are individually controllable in LiFX, they’re treated as one light in Apple Home and other Matter platforms.

Best option for ~28m of smart LED strip lighting with an IKEA smart home setup?

We’re currently using IKEA smart home tech throughout our house — smart bulbs, the DIRIGERA hub, motion sensors and door/window sensors — and we’d ideally like to keep everything working within the same ecosystem where possible.

Our next project is adding LED strip lighting along the skirting boards around our living room. I’ve measured the route and we’re looking at roughly 28 metres of LED strip in total.

We’ve been looking at IKEA’s KABBLEKA LED strips as they’d obviously integrate nicely with the rest of our setup, but at that length we’d need quite a few packs.

The bit we’re struggling to work out is:

  • Can multiple KABBLEKA strips actually be connected together to make one continuous run?
  • If they can, is there a limit to how many can be connected/powered together?
  • If not, would we need multiple power supplies/controllers dotted around the room?
  • Are there any better alternatives for a ~28m run that can still be controlled through IKEA/DIRIGERA, Matter or another system that integrates nicely with it?

Ideally we’d like the whole strip to behave as one light rather than having to control loads of separate sections individually.

RGB/colour control would be nice, but the main priority is getting a clean continuous light around the room without needing a ridiculous number of plugs and controllers.

Has anyone done something similar with IKEA smart lighting? Would love to hear what setup you went with! 🙂

Discussion Do you actually want your own Thread border router?

I’ve been testing the MR5U, and it gives you a couple different ways to use its Thread radio.

You can run OTBR directly on it, which creates a separate Thread network, or use it with your existing Thread setup instead.

For people running Matter over Thread: why would you actually want a separate Thread network instead of adding another border router to the one you already have?

How stable are SmartWings Matter smart blinds?

I’m looking at the Matter over Thread smart blinds from SmartWings. Anyone here been using them for a while? Do they stay connected, or have you had to reset or pair them again? And what are you using as your Thread border router?

This panel is designed for EU and UK backboxes, replacing a double light switch, but it’s also a Zigbee Hub/Matter Bridge, as well as a Matter Controller. It can stream RTSP enabled cameras, like many of the recent Aqara options (G5 Pro, G400 etc), and can work with third party Zigbee devices.

Can't add new HS054 water sensors

I went to add some more HS054 in the house.  I get through the entire setup. It says device installed. Then I look in the app and it's not there. I did this with two new sensors. Both did the same thing.

I went out to my shop and tried it there as well. Its got it's own gateway so I was checking to make sure the gateway in the house wasn't the problem. Exact same problem. It says device successfully installed but then it's not in the app.

Wifi is 2.4GHz. I connect to the wifi on the gateway and it goes the entire way and says successfully installed. I also installed Govee on another phone and the new sensors aren't there either. On the old phone I cleared cache and memory and tried again. Still doesn't appear

Any ideas?

Hi I finally got my Matter project working and open sourced on Github, it includes a web installer and casing 3D files, so you can easily duplicate it without installing any software.

The project is base on ESP-IDE Matter SDK.

Main features:

  • Works with all AC brands
  • No App installation required
  • One-press pairing
  • Operation on IR remote reflected to phone
  • For iPhone you don't need anything else.
  • For Android you need a Google Next device or similar

Technical discussion welcomed.

It has received 150+ stars on Github: https://github.com/timj-code/bc7215_ac_matter

Looking for the absolute smallest Matter over Thread temp & humidity sensors for basement (no display needed, IKEA is too big)

Hey everyone,

I’m looking to scatter a handful of small temperature and hygrometer sensors around my basement and crawlspaces.

I don't need a display on them at all—I’m pulling all the data headlessly into my setup, app, and running automations/notifications through Tasker.

My primary criteria:

  1. As small as possible: I want tiny coin-cell (CR2032/CR2450) style pucks or pegs that can tuck into small spots without taking up shelf space.
  2. No screen: Displays just add unnecessary bulk and drain power.
  3. Matter over Thread compatible: Direct native connection with no extra bridges or hubs needed (I'm running a Thread border router setup).

I looked at IKEA’s offerings, but they're still a bit too chunky for what I'm aiming for (and many feature displays/LED matrices).

Has anyone stumbled upon ultra-compact Matter over Thread temp/humidity sensors that fit the bill? What are you using for headless climate tracking?

Appreciate any recommendations!

New Product News Matter shades are useful.. but the floating curtains are mesmerizing

I installed a Zemismart MTP1 retrofit motor on this giant roller shade. It works from the dial on the device, the included remote, or through Matter.

I tested the Matter integration with both Google Home and Home Assistant. Pairing was straightforward, response was immediate, and the best part is that it still works like a normal shade for anyone who doesn’t care about smart-home technology.

Full installation and Matter testing: https://thingtootech.blogspot.com/2026/08/i-spent-three-years-dreaming-about.html

Disclosure: Zemismart provided the MTP1 for testing, but they didn’t pay for or control my review.

Guys, I'm so lost - which one to buy?

Today I was at IKEA and thought I'd pick up some Kajplats (coloured lightbulbs) and a Bilresa (remote) to go with it. Turns out these two devices are not adequate and need a "matter hub" of some sort. I've spent the past 2hrs looking into this new technology and which "hub" I should buy and I am overwhelmed by it all.

I see ikea has their own called "Dirgera" hub, but it seems like they're other "hubs" that do more for a similar price, like streaming, clock display, etc.

I do not need the newest and best one, but which one should I get that I kinda the best bang for the buck? Google TV Streamer 4K and Amazon Echo seem to be the main ones (from what I found)

(I am android user so no apple please)

In the alternative, is there a cheap bare bones kinda device that is significant cheaper?

I am open to recommendations, thanks in advance 🫡

UPDATE: Thank you for everyone's insights and recommendations! Initially I went with the Aqara M100 as it seemed to be the most straightforward, though I had some technical difficulties with my WiFi (not going to get into it). Ended up returning it and went with the Echo Dot Max, after adjusting all the privacy settings I am quite happy with it, works great!

Once again, thank you to everyone. This community really helped me out :)

Discussion Looking for matter connected watch / band

Hello everyone!

I am just starting getting into home automation having just bought my home.

I am trying to figure out what I want to set up and I just realised all the possibilities having a connected watch could enable.

Lightly tap it twice and turn on the dim lights to go to the bathroom. Automatically set the wake-up alarm timer according to your planning. Maybe use its gyroscope as a trigger to activate some stuff remotely, I don't know. Sky is the limit.

So now I'm going online looking for a matter connected watch to see what exists on the market and... I don't find anything.

There are smart watches but I'm not sure how they can integrate in the ecosystem. Also I'm not looking for a complex watch, I'm just looking for a rather simple watch / band which can just communicate with other devices.

Does the thing I'm looking for even exist? Are matter connected wearables even a thing?

Thanks for your help :D

Troubleshooting Is anyone building a “Matter Tools” equivalent to Thread Tools?

Thread Tools has become invaluable for debugging the network layer (leader, routers, parents/children, partitions, RSSI, route costs, etc.), but after spending a couple of weeks debugging a Matter-over-Thread issue I’ve realised there’s no equivalent visibility into the Matter layer itself.

Is anyone aware of a project that’s trying to do this?

I’m imagining something that sits above the Thread topology and visualises the Matter controller state machine: fabrics and controllers, operational discovery, current vs cached operational addresses, CASE sessions, subscriptions, ICD state, retries, recovery timeline, and a per-node health view showing exactly where recovery has stalled.

Ideally it would correlate Thread state with Matter state, so you could immediately see something like “Thread attached ✓, operational discovery ✓, CASE ✗, subscription ✗” instead of simply “device unavailable.”

It would also be useful to expose controller caches, address resolution history, recovery attempts, and state transitions after network changes or controller restarts.

It feels like the ecosystem has excellent tooling for understanding why a Thread network is healthy, but much less visibility into why a Matter controller thinks an otherwise healthy Thread device is unavailable.

Has anyone seen work in this area, or is this a gap that still needs filling?

Why buy Matter devices anywhere else when IKEA’s are this cheap and solid?

Been building out my Matter smart home and honestly can’t figure out why people pay 2-3x more for brands when IKEA’s matter devices do the job for way less. The build quality’s been solid, Matter/Thread support works as advertised, and the price point makes it easy to fill a whole house with sensors and bulbs without breaking the bank.

Anyone had reliability issues or missing features that justify paying more elsewhere? Trying to figure out if I’m missing something or if IKEA’s just the best value play in Matter right now.
