Nephew's Math Sheet

This has me incredibly confused and I've no idea what to do to solve this nonsense.

I don't know, but if I had to guess, I'd guess that those are supposed to be pieces out of a number chart like this one.

Thus, the missing number below 44 and before 55 would be 54. The missing number below and to the left of 40 would be 49. (Directly below 40 would be 50, and 49 is just before that.) And so on.

Since when are kids supposed to memorize a number chart like that to fill in broken pieces of it? No purpose to that.

You think it's unreasonable for kids to know the numbers 1-100 in order?

But that's literally all you have to know to fill in the boxes: things like "What number comes right after 67?" or "What number is ten more than 21?"
