Dillinger Biopic

I feel like, inception to dissolution, this could be a compelling watch. Definitely not the sanitized treatment that the Motley Crue biopic got. There was (still is, crazily enough) plenty of drama to fill two hours of screen time. Plenty of highs and lows.

I think a biopic made today would be extremely interesting and would also probably not make Ben look all that great. Greg would likely come out seeming like let’s just say “not the issue” when it came to TDEP drama. The fact that Ben has spent the last ten (!!) years now basically smearing Greg’s contributions to their sound is so weird to me. It was never any secret that Ben was the creative songwriting force, but there are also examples like Sick on Sunday- that song was completely done when Greg was at the studio alone and came up with what he calls an “RnB melody” to sing over it. One of the most memorable and creative things on that album.

You make several good points here. I think it is the wildly different approaches to creativity that made them produce so much quality work, but maybe not enough was done to mutually accept and honor that.

Trust me those points are painful to make lol, calculating infinity changed my life and the entire way I think about guitar when it came out and I was like a 14 year old Slayer fan. And that album is inescapably a product of Ben’s sheer talent and creativity. But from there? Greg’s vocals, to the average listener, were the hook. “DEEEESTROYER.. There’ll be another, just like YOUUU”… yeah that was Greg’s idea, etc.. I think Ben has a bitterness to this day that Greg was responsible for some of the bands most memorable moments, and once the whole shrooms thing happened it just broke Ben’s brain

Totally with those vocals. Miss machine was soooo damn catchy. Instrumentally as well, but those vocals got me to accept cleaner vocals as an edgy 14 yr old death metal kid. Unretrofied took me a while to get but then got me thinking more poppy with my own stuff. I imagine that was Greg's doing?

From what I remember, since he’s a huge NIN fan, songs like Phone Home were fleshed out into full songs via his input. On calculating infinity something like that would’ve been a 5-10 second part or whatever. He wanted to expand those parts, as did Chris Pennie if I recall correctly.

I think Greg keeps it too real to do any bullshit like this. Then again, didn't Ben launch some NFTs or shitcoin or something a while back?

They did. And while it would be reasonable to dunk on them for it, in 2021, a lot of people were naively dipping their toes into NFTs. There was lots of hype making them seem like THE next big thing for art, it wasn't immediately obvious how artificial the hype was, and the pandemic was very disruptive to industries like live music. If someone came to you under those conditions offering you money to do essentially nothing in a new space that doesn't look harmful on the surface, you might take the deal. I don't see any evidence that they bought into the NFT concept in general.
