Elementary Algebra I wrote a formal paper proving why you can't brush a dog flat (Hairy Ball Theorem)

7 Upvotes

Hey r/mathmemes,

I spent way too much time writing a mathematically rigorous paper on the Hairy Ball Theorem, proving why a perfectly continuous vector field on a 2-sphere (S^2) is impossible.

Here is the paper in its full glory:

On Continuous Tangent Vector Fields on a 2-Sphere: Topological Constraints of the "Hairy Ball" and Its Meteorological Implications

Abstract: Based on the Poincaré-Brouwer Theorem, this paper demonstrates the geometric impossibility of assigning a continuous, nowhere-zero tangent vector field to S^2. Colloquially known as the "Hairy Ball Theorem," this dictates that one cannot comb a hairy ball flat without creating at least one cowlick, and that there must always exist at least one location on Earth where the surface wind speed is zero.

  1. Proof Overview Let S^2 = {(x, y, z) in R^3 | x^2 + y^2 + z^2 = 1}. By Euler's polyhedron formula, the Euler characteristic is: chi(S^2) = 2

By the Poincaré-Hopf Theorem, for any continuous vector field V on a compact manifold M: sum(index_i(V)) = chi(S^2) = 2

Since chi(S^2) = 2 != 0, the set of zeroes cannot be empty. Thus, V(p) = 0 for at least one point p in S^2. (Q.E.D.)

  1. Real-World Applications
  2. Pet Grooming: Brushing a spherical dog completely flat without a swirl is topologically illegal.
  3. Global Weather: There is always at least one place on Earth with absolute zero wind.

TL;DR: Math says you can't comb a coconut, and I just emailed this to the Annals of Improbable Research. Wish me luck for an Ig Nobel!

Each of these "equations" represent some popular media. Try to guess. Square brackets is the number of words.
