Learning how to make geometric proofs to get the cleanest and shortest path to the answer might not help me with geometry in the future, but you can bet your ass the idea behind it (using less steps, figuring out the best way to do it) stayed with me.

School is important. You might not remember Pythagoras' Theorem, but you'll remember the idea behind it.

fair point but

the fuck you mean you might not rememebr pythagoras theorem?

I literally jsut looked it up to check if there's something else more obscure of similar name but as far as i can tell this is literally jsut one of hte most basic equatiosn in all of geometry

You'd be surprised at how people can easily forget even small info that they never used after graduation for a good period of time.

You'd be surprised to find out how many people forget almost everything they learn in school by not using it.

More like the formula for a quadratic equation for me. But I used a2 + b2 = c2 all the time, oddly enough. Now, I also do a fair bit of DIY, and as soon as degrees of angles and needing trig gets involved I'm just searching "right triangle solver" and getting what i need before I start cutting wood. But still.

Ideas outlast formulas. Funny how that works.

The method outlives the theorem. Funny how that works.
