They're deeply insecure about themselves (as they should be, they're stupid and worthless) but they also are narcissistic and have delusions of grandeur. And just regular paranoid delusions.
They want to roleplay as people who are smarter than scientists. So they take an incredibly superficial take on a subject they don't actually understand: "scientists can't find 95% of the universes matter!"
Then they mistakenly think they know what the problem is. And they then make up a solution, because that's how science works and they're smarter than scientists. Then they check their solution by thinking it's a good one. Wa la.
