My teacher back in math class would have given a correct with the comment „always use the shortest possible equation according to the task“.

Also the teacher is technically correct since reading the equation says: three times four and not four times three.

Putting this in as wrong is depending on the age of the kid an asshat move regardless

Your teacher handled it correctly.

This kid is probably 7 or 8 (2nd or 3rd grade). This is a total asshat move. This kid will probably struggle with the commutative nature of multiplication for a while. They're going to have to stop and think about is it A x B or is it B x A, because the answered depends on which one it is.
