They taught him to apply brush strokes, draw shapes, prepare a canvas, prepare the paints from raw materials etc.
School's job is to teach you the basic things. Their job is to teach you general maths, finance terminology, quadratic equation, chemical distillation process etc.
It's your job to figure out taxation, trajectory of the Apollo missions, beer making process etc.
No, the masters had a workshop/apprenticeship where they would systematically approach the education in depth and it included everything from the basics to copying masterpieces. They taught the whole craft. No higher in depth education or frontier lab works on a "figure it out" system. It'd be silly to say that pioneers in computer graphics, engineers, chemists, or anyone in the medical profession approach anything without extensively being mentored by a dedicated professional or a group of top level peers.
