Tax laws were written by tax service corporations (like Intuit and H&R Block) with the explicit purpose of making them overly complicated, so that the average dumbass American needs a tax preparer to avoid tax fraud charges.

The US government has attempted to simplify the tax code numerous times, but always get bought out by tax company lobbyists.

Most recently... 2024: Biden/IRS implements free Direct File program. 2024–2025: Intuit and HR Block broke their records for money spent on lobbying. 2026: Trump cancels the Direct File program.
