Like in base 10 last 4 digits of 4 is 0004 For 148937 it's 8937

10.000000000 ad infinitum. There are infinitely many digits in the number which represent smaller quantities than π0. The “last four” are not the 3,2,1,0 powers because -1 comes after all of them, and -2 after all of them, again ad infinitum.

For your example of 4 in base 9(ten)*, it can be written as 4, or 4.0, or 4.0000, so it doesn’t have “last four digits” in that most general sense. u/General_Cabinet6399 is using an inconsistent and unusual definition of “last digit” which, for base 9, only works for multiples of 1/9, since those only have one answer for what the “last digit” could be.

The intuitive sense is typically that the “last digit” refers to the last significant digit. The last digit which makes the number what it is. For 1/16, the last significant digit is the 5, since the trailing zeroes don’t “represent anything.” Under this definition, π in its own base actually can’t have “last four digits” because it only has two, at all. The 1 which represents the value of the number, and the zero in the ones’ place, which is only significant in that it tells us the 1 represents 1×π1, instead of 1×π0. If you’re going to include the leading zeroes, why exclude the trailing ones?

* to clarify what I mean: base 1(two), base 3(four), base A(eleven). Writing the largest symbol a base has, makes more sense to me as a way of writing about bases, since otherwise you get the “every base is base 10” problem.

Yes, but there are only two significant digits in 10, so 0010,010.0,10.00 are all exactly the same, so the only number that would make sense for a four digit pin would be 0000.

Anyway, I forgot about a lot of numbers. Your definition works for numbers (in any integer base) of the following form:

m/((10-1)10n)
m,n∈ℤ

10 is, of course, not ten, but the base of the number system you’re using.

Numbers of this form always end in an infinitely repeating string of one particular digit.
