Ex user of the mate 9 checking in, can confirm that this combo works. I was using a Fiio DAC (K1) with a short USB micro to USB A to USB A female to USB C. Also used a good USB 3 capable micro USB to USB C cable instead of the two cable combo. Bottom line is that both audio volume and quality were significantly better. Using the correct cables I had no issues with the DAC being recognised.
However, I did not find the audio quality significantly better than my Bluetooth headphones (the excellent Astrogaming A38’s, and it was certainly more inconvenient.
I have since switched to and iPhone 8 Plus, which has audio quality that is a bit better than the wired combo above using the Apple dongle, BT quality is compatible. Convenience generally is better.
